Ted's team is planting 3 mature Japanese maple trees in my front yard as I write this. The experience has been excellent and we are so pleased. Ted Meljivich operates his business on a large strip under the power poles behind Google in Mountain View. There he has a large collection of boxed trees. Ted does not have an office staff to support him so it takes a few days for him to respond to his on-line request for information. But once he is able to fit you into his schedule, things move fast. I needed three matching trees so he suggested that I fly to Oregon to the grower and pick out the trees myself. It was a brilliant offer and I appreciated the opportunity to control the outcome of my project. Ted allowed me to tag along on his regular buying trip, so the cost to be was just my airplane ticket. We chose the trees and he took me back to the airport to catch my return flight. Once the trees were selected, it took about two weeks for them to arrive in Mountain View. If the rain had given us a break, they would have been in the ground the next week. Instead, Ted suggested that we wait for the first string of sunny days. His team is very professional and they work with a great amount of care and caution. The trees are planted with a water tube that allows us to be sure water is reaching the deepest roots, plus a large water basin. The soil is a mixture of high nitrogen redwood compost and native soil which Ted says will encourage the trees to establish quickly. This has been a wonderful experience.
