I had no business getting ice cream before attending a party, but it was my last day in Connecticut so I just had to squeeze one more snack in before I flew back to Los Angeles. Originally, I stopped at an ice cream place down the street but it didn't open till 4pm (which is a tad insane if you ask me) so I ended up giving 0degree Thai Ice Cream a go instead. This place looks mad cool when you walk in and the place is decorated very well. The walls are covered in art and the counter itself has all the ice cream and treats you really came for. I ended it up keeping it simple and ordering what I think was called the Cookie Monster, which was basically just rolled Oreo ice cream. It's always cool getting to watch them make the ice cream right in front of you and after a few minutes I was eating it in my car like a true ice cream sneaking champion. The ice cream was great and that's all I can really even say. The flavour was good, the price was fine, and they gave me enough to leave me satisfied. Overall, 0degree Thai Ice Cream is a cool spot to have in downtown Middletown. I was having such a a good Thursday night when it was abruptly ruined the second I walked into this establishment. I was so excited to introduce rolled ice cream to my good friend however that was ruined the moment I walked into the store. I couldn't even breathe before the youngish girl working goes "I am gonna be completely honest, the only thing we have is over there, I am not rolling ice cream." I look over to see what she's talking about and it's this mini mini mini fridge with ice cream anyone can buy from the local stop and shop. The overall wait took quite a long time though. The Thai iced tea came out first and it was bland, the flavor was mild and I could barely taste the Thai tea flavor. The color wasn't the usual bright orange I normally see. After another wait, we got our cookie monster ice cream which is Oreo cookie flavored, it was in the fridge the whole time; we were able to get three toppings for it. My child enjoyed it. I'm not sure why it took so long since it was already premade. A large group of people came in after us, the employee was about to take their orders before giving us our order, thankfully, they were still deciding so he started working on our order. I was in the mood for boba so I thought I'd give 0° a try. Ordered Matcha with tapioca pearls. There was one worker who was on the phone so I looked around. Shop is cute but customer service, quality and prices are ridiculous. I was there for at least 15 minutes for 1 drink and paid about $10. After about 5 minutes of me having placed my order, the worker walked by me with a cooler and said he'd be right back as he needed ice. And he left. We topped our ice cream with M&Ms and peanut butter cups. It was very good and we enjoyed it. I thought it was on the expensive side at about $10 but if you split it with someone it isn't bad. The only thing that bothered me was that if you pay with credit card you get charged 3% more than if you pay with cash. So, if you don't have cash you get charged 3% more. I recently visited 0 Degrees and was quite disappointed with my experience. The manager was extremely rude to the teenage staff right in front of customers, which made the atmosphere very uncomfortable. Additionally, the quality of the ice cream was not up to par. I hope the management can work on improving both the customer service and the product quality. My son was extremely disappointed. The owner is degrading the one person she has behind the counter that couldn't be more than 17-19 years old. She is yelling at him loud enough for me to hear which is absolutely appalling in my opinion. I was a manager at a restaurant for 5 years and never once yelled at my employees while customers are in the restaurant. It made me and my kid very uncomfortable. I would've given the place 5 stars, but there were a few minor details that prevented this. Ordering is very straightforward. There are a few chalkboards behind the counter. You can order the Thai Ice Cream, Bubble Teas & Fruit Teas. When placing an ice cream order, you give your choices to the person at the register ($10 min. to use a card, $7/cup), they put your name(s) on the cups and then you wait for them to call your name. Once called, you make your way back counter, to watch them prepare your ice cream. If you've ever been to Cold Stone Creamery, the method is very similar. They start by pouring the liquids over a freezing cold circular slab, then they add the ingredients. The mixture is chopped, blended and eventually smoothed out over the surface of the slab. The trick here, is they scrape the ice cream off in a way, that it forms rolls or tubes of ice cream. They then take the tubes and stand them upright in a cup. From there, your cup is brought to the toppings station. My son and hubby both had the Strawberry Shawty (vanilla ice cream, strawberries, graham) and I had the Key Lime (vanilla ice cream, limes and graham). My son added sprinkles...cause that's what 3 year olds do. My hubby added chocolate chips...cause that's what 40 year olds do. I stuck to my standard, whipped cream with a cherry on top. We were all pleased with the taste and the creamy texture. Seating is limited. There is bar seating facing out the front windows, and tables along one side of the space. They could stand to use a few more tables. The spoons need to be upgraded. The ice cream is firm, and trying to get it out of the cup with a flimsy spoon was hard work. It was especially hard for my son. The price is a little steep. The one size portion at $7, is more than a pint of "the good" ice cream at the grocery store. I got a large for $7.50 (before tax/tip) and the steamed milk came in a cold cup. I couldn't hold the cup I would have scalded my hand. I asked for a heat protection sleeve and was told the store doesn't have any. I asked for a second cup and the worker said the owner would charge her $2.00 for using a second cold cup for a scalding hot drink you offer and charge $7.50 for. Give me a break. It's not safe nor legal to serve hot scalding liquids in cold cups. Is the owner so CHEAP that not only does s/he not order hot cups or protective sleeves for their expensive hot drinks or is so toxic and abusive that they charge their workers $2 for each extra cup to have customers avoid scalding their hands? Those cold cups cost 5-10 cents at most. If you're going to offer hot beverages, it is your legal obligation to have your hot beverages served in hot cups not cheap out and use cold cups nor is it legal to charge your employees for basic business supplies necessary to do their jobs because you're too cheap to keep the proper food containers/cups stocked in your facility. It is illegal in the country to do this and a huge violation of fair labor laws. This is the last time I'll be going to this place. There are other places literally only doors down from this place to spend your money and not enable cheapness of the owners. read more
