I have been training with Irving for the past 5 months and cannot speak highly enough for the work and dedication that he puts into helping people reach their fitness goals. Before working out with him I had very limited experience in the gym and mobility issues which made a lot exercises difficult or impossible. Irving always had solutions and ways to help me work around those issues and over time my mobility and strength increased to the point I was able to squat and deadlift properly again. Despite the short time that I worked with him, Irving was all-in when it came to optimizing my sessions. TL;DR: I knocked 40 points from my cholesterol despite gaining weight (thankfully more muscle) and I now have a good foundation to workout solo since Irving put a lot of care in making sure I have the knowledge to improve my habits and workout without injuring myself. Working with Irving was one of the best investments I've ever made. I trained with Irving for about a year the only reason I stopped was because I moved out of San Diego. For some more context, I was never particularly fit but kept a skinny build for the majority of my life. During and post COVID though I gained a bunch of weight mostly because I spend most of my time in front of a computer and started to eat burritos and in n out a bit too frequently. I decided to sign up with Irving at first in group lessons with my girlfriend since I found the pricing to be quite compelling. What I really loved about Irving is that he's not a bootcamp style instructor, he never made me feel like I was out of shape, he's positive, encouraging and fun to be around. The gym is also no frills relative to larger gyms I've been to, you won't get the plastic host pushing you to sign endless forms, the focus is very on sustainably getting healthy. The focus on sustainability was great because it allowed me to progressively make my habits better without getting discouraged, first with my girlfriend where the goal was just to get moving, then focusing on healthier eating and upping my protein intake to lose fat and gain muscle and then finally moving to solo workouts where we could focus on heavier lifts, mobility and strength. I get that some people like getting yelled at or might want a more intense experience which Irving can certainly provide but the focus on sustainable improvements over time helped me become stronger, far healthier but still motivated through the entire process. Friends and family have definitely all noticed that I got way bigger (every day is chest day) but frankly what I'm most thankful for has been a better attitude towards my health that I'm confident I can sustain even after finishing the workouts. read more

Probably like a lot of people, I've had gym memberships in the past, and they've always followed a common pattern: sign up with great enthusiasm, do the included couple of PT sessions to establish some workout plan (handily noted on some pre-templated stationery), see both my enthusiasm and attendance drop precipitously, keep paying for 6-9 months longer with practically zero attendance (because, hey, just *paying* for a gym membership counts for something, right?). Well, having gone round that hamster wheel a few times over the years, when I decided I wanted to start making more of an effort in terms of exercise, I knew that it would be difficult to break the old pattern at a regular gym. So... ongoing personal training sessions, I thought. How much does that cost? Do I have to travel far to find a trainer? How frequently should I be going? These were questions I didn't know the answers to, so I headed to Google Maps to check out my options. Turned out there are quite a few trainers in this area, so let's try to whittle them down. Much whittling later, my questions were more or less answered. I had definitely been concerned with cost, since you're not just paying for access to space and machinery, but principally for an expert's undivided attention. I needn't have worried. Well, look, going to a trainer three times a week obviously is going to cost more than a 24 Hour Fitness membership, but at least in my case the difference is more than worth it! Enough history, what's this place like already...?! Irving is a really nice guy. The right balance of in shape enough that you know he knows what he's doing without being some super ripped intimidating presence. Disciplined enough to push you past the boundaries of your comfort zone without letting you stray too far or hurt yourself. When it comes to working out, I'm dumb. I want someone to tell me what to do, how many times to do it, and how difficult it should be (weight, etc). I need to be kept honesty. I need structure. I need above all guidance. I don't want to be that guy in the gym making a fool of himself by using a machine in the totally wrong way, or not realizing my form is abominable, or having a big rip in the butt of my shorts and not noticing... Those - motivation side - are reasons I don't like to go to the gym, and with Irving they're non-concerns. With grace and humor he guides me through every exercise, encourages me to push to the right level, and to take on those exercises I suck at (what is it with body weight exercises like pull ups and push ups that makes me suck so bad?!). The outcome is that I actually go. Maybe not three times *every* week, but I'm getting there. And when I'm there, I have variety. And I don't need to think, or plan, or remember what I lifted last time. He says "Jump/Lift/Push/Pull/whatever", and I just nut up and do it. And every session, I leave feeling better than I did going in, and I do see progress in my performance. I get that not everyone can spend a few hundred dollars a month on multiple weekly private PT sessions (it's definitely not something I could have done ten years ago), but if you can, and if you have the same issues with keeping up a meaningful gym membership under your own steam as I do, Irving is your man! read more

He's very friendly and empathetic, but he also has a really encouraging way to help you push your limits to grow stronger and healthier. A gym-phobe by nature, I've always thought that hiring a personal trainer might be the ticket to learning good form and achieving the pecs and biceps that have eluded me. I wanted to provide an update/ progress report those who are interested in signing up to train with Irving. It's been about 10 months that I've been training with him, at first I started out once or twice a week for the first couple of months, then bumped it up to three times a week. (I also play indoor soccer once a week for about 40 minutes). I wish I would have taken measurements and before pics to see exactly how my body has changed, but regardless, when I started training I was wearing size 8-10 pants and wearing medium shirts, and my bust size was 34. I am now down to size 4 pants, x-small to small shirts and my bust is now a 32. For reference, I'm 5'3" and was about 150lbs give or take- I'm not 100% how much I weigh now, but I'm not really paying attention to that because I know I've gained a lot of muscle throughout my fitness journey. I am now working on more specific goals such as defining and strengthening particular areas and also working on my cleaning up my diet to see even more results which Irving has contributed to as well. Even after 10 months, he still checks up and keeps me accountable. He's still extremely flexible. When I can't make it into the gym, I've taken what I have learned and applied it when I do an at home workout or when working out with friends. Again, fitness goals don't happen overnight, and if you're serious about wanting to put in the work to change and reach your goals then Irving is the perfect trainer for you!
