Love the hosts. The songs can be repetitive, as every radio station is, but what truly shines are the hosts. Rachel, Adam, and all the rest.

SONiC 102.9 is the freshest sounding commercial radio station in Edmonton. It is a Modern Rock…read morestation which means that no classic rock or current mainstream nausea is allowed. For the most part. They are owned by Rogers Communications, so they're not as "indie" as they probably want us to think they are. So unfortunately, bands like Green Day, Blink 182, and Offspring still claim squatter's rights on SONiC's airwaves. Garner Andrews' morning radio show transcends the other stations' wacky morning zoo crews. Andrews is laid-back and natural, and I enjoy his off-beat sense of humour. His "salute to substandard service" and the "Bring Back Pie" movement are funny stand-outs. Garner Andrews (to my knowledge) has never staged a sex act with a stripper and leaked the video online for publicity like another Edmonton morning DJ whose name rhymes with Ball Gown. One thing I don't like about SONiC is how they ignore their roots. There were a lot of bands from the '80s that spawned the type of music that SONiC plays, such as The Smiths or Hüsker Dü that the station doesn't ackowledge. They rarely ever play anything pre-1990s. The '90s are oldies for them. I know they're called "Modern Rock" but that's just a stupid industry adjective to describe a genre that we used to refer to as "Alternative." If you're sick of hearing "Stairway to Hotel California" on K-97 and the Bear is testing your sanity, turn it to SONiC. You will probably discover some new music that you will like.

I came to this actual building for a tour of their music library as part of an Edmonton Public Library Learn Downtown event and was wowed about the purpose-built space. The music collection is lovely and there really is more space down here than I expected. This area isn't normally open to the public but it is essential for the DJs preparing their setlists. We also saw some really great old-fashioned media. I wish I could have stayed longer and seen more. I'm super happy to have been able to visit the music library and get an even greater appreciation for one of my all-time favourite radio stations.

They have a good vestibule area for people entering the building and for launch events this is filled with vendors. There was merch tables and drink options when we were there. No food but they had free snacks - hard pretzels and chocolate covered strawberries. Entrance Fee was $20 it's cash only. So don't spend your only money on a CD then head out to Jasper Ave to find a cash machine like me. Inside it's pretty and the twinkling fairy lights make the space really appealing. There is lots of room for high tables and audience seating, as well as standing area in front of the stage. A great space for about 80 people. Cool place to hang and watch live music.

It's been a couple of years since 92.5 got a new yelp review and since then they have morphed from…read moreJoe to Fresh FM. We have had Fresh on for a couple of days where I work because of our unending quest to find a station that everybody can agree on and so far 92.5 holds the crown for being left on the longest. One of the big pluses they have going for them has to be their morning hosts Dani and Jay. They really connect well with their listeners and rely more on the natural humor of everyday situations as opposed to trying to force bad jokes or rely on vulgarity like other stations. I also like the wide variety of music they play. They of course play the current hits but also dip into 90's and late 80's music throughout the day. Their biggest negative has to be the same one that alot of stations suffer from which is the over rotation of certain songs. I can currently sing all the lyrics to "take me to chuch" by Hozier due to the fact that I have heard it MANY times throughout the day over the course of this last week.(not that I am suggesting anybody on yelp should want or be subjected to hearing me sing) I like my stations a little more high energy so they haven't managed to totally convert me from being a HOT 107 fan. However I think Fresh is a fabulous alternative if you are trying to find a reasonably tasteful station with a wide variety of music for a diverse listening audience like the one I have at my place of employment.

Joe FM isn't as lame as most of us probably think it is…read more The station suffers from a dissociative identity disorder which explains their wide fluctuations across the Pop/Rock spectrum. Their symptoms include unexplainable, unnecessary forays into current rock, flashbacks to fetishistic '70s and '80s pop, and moments of functioning clarity where they showcase classic Rock & Roll. Joe FM exhibits a total distortion of all subjective time and taste. Imagine the Bear, Cap FM, and K-97 all rolled into one. Not a bad thing. The DJ's are boring and unmemorable but at least they're not the sugar-fueled, attention seekers that pose naked on billboards so they can prove how zany and dangerous they apparently are. There's no equivalent to the Terry, Bill, and Brown show here. I really thought that Joe would be background music for your dentist's waiting room. I expected a lot of Celine, Barbra, and Train. Not so. (Actually they did play Train. Ugh.) They play a lot more rock music than I expected, though it's all the same songs you'll hear on K-97 and the Bear. Their format isn't bad but it needs fine tuning. Joe need to get rid of this image that they have of being your grandparents' radio station. They can start by turfing their unexciting, generic name ("Joe FM," seriously?) and lose the funeral home directors that they use for DJs. Joe FM is like the friendly, good-natured person at your job that everyone likes but doesn't want to hang-out with.

I guess I can start by saying repetitive radio is pretty much what you get from radio in Edmonton…read morebesides CJSR, but this station takes it to a whole new level. I have the misfortune in having to listen to this where I work because no one can change the station. The morning hosts that aren't funny at all, and besides Terry Evans, Cory and Amy are next in line for talking way too much about their personal lives. Up (har, har) next we got the afternoon show. Gods below, people (and the radio station) claim Shannon has an infectious laugh, but anyone can tell when a person forces a laugh, and she is the Queen of that department. She tries to do these 'mix tapes' which are nothing but the same repeat garbage they would have played anyway. It doesn't help she often enjoys singing the last bit of some songs. yeah, if I wanted karaoke, I would visit Lee Gardens. Duncan is tolerable. Thank the gods I don't have to listen to this on weekends. Onto the music. It's tired, boring, repeats, oops! I mean 'Edmonton's Greatest Hits', of songs everyone has heard a million times. I don't know how anyone can enjoy listening to the same 3 or 4 tunes by Queen, Alanis Morissette, Rush, Nickelback, and the plethora of overplayed music at damned near the same time everyday. You could probably set your watch to it. All in all, now and then they will play something half decent, but it isn't worth it.
