He gave us a tour of the facilities the day before the shoot and we got to see all that Fairfax Public Access has to offer. There is a large empty studio that we used complete with a huge green-screen wall or choice of black, navy or tan curtain (I think those were the colors). They also have a set that has a full kitchen--just like when you think of Food Network shows like Rachel Ray. I personally don't know all the terminology for all the stuff in there but we were all very impressed by everything. I felt that the cost for renting the studio to non-members was quite reasonable but I have no basis for comparison. We also brought in our own lighting and cameras but were able to use the studio lights with some assistance. Jerry let us know that members who take certain classes to train on the equipment are able to use the studios and everything free of charge (the membership costs $26 according to the site and you have to pay for the classes). Definitely look into this place as an option for studio rentals among other things.

Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding popped back into my mind as I thought about the craziness that followed. I remember reading up on these two women and my teacher suggested I write a report on them for one of my big homework projects. It was very easy for me. Personally I think my teacher just wanted to read what I would write. I was snapped out my thoughts when I heard Corinna Delgado laugh. It was a pleasant laugh. I quickly looked up the number, but wasn't expecting to get through. Boy was I wrong. I felt like a complete idiot because at the time, I did not know Corinna Delgado's name. I could hear the three second delay and my mind could not get use to that. Evidently this is something people in radio are use to. Corinna Delgado cleaned up the talk we had, but she also recorded, my version of Nancy screaming "Why Me? Why Anyone Why?" Even today, I don't think Nancy Kerrigan would see humor in her tragic event... still Second place is the first to lose, but if you ask yourself, this question, who really lost... Enough of that...I answer Corinna Delgado Timeline Question and got it right. I have listen to so many people call in over the phone for money, prizes or just to talk. I never expected to be on the radio myself, but I was. The only draw back is that I did not hear myself on the radio, because I was on the phone waiting for Corinna Delgado to come back on the phone. Today I now hold a bottle opener that says 9.47 The Drive, the Movie 1917 movie on blue ray and dvd and a 9.47 The Drive Pen. Very cool. I will admit at first I thought the package was sent to the wrong, but then realized this is the gift I won. I enjoy listening to the oldies music of the 80' and 90's. The building is on Half street and easy to miss. Driving past the entrance is safer than being dropped off in front of the building. There is limited street parking. The lobby guard is nice. The station is on the second floor.

I found out this morning that the Society for Technical Communication (STC) has filed for…read morebankruptcy. As of today, the STC headquarters in Fairfax, VA has permanently closed its doors. All activities have ceased. I am saddened by this decision. STC has been instrumental in my professional career as a technical writer and communicator. I joined in 2004. I was a part of the Manitoba chapter. There were a multitude of STC chapters around the world. When I moved back to the greater Toronto area, my chapter was STC Toronto, which happened to be the largest chapter outside of the United States. STC published a journal and magazine that members had access to. I remember reading the magazine that came in the mail. There was an ad for the Master of Science degree at Mercer University. Targeted at technical communicators who were in the workforce, you could get a graduate degree in Technical Communication Management. I kept this ad in mind. I enrolled in the program in late 2007. I became a graduate student in January 2008. I graduated just over two years later in August 2010. I learned so much from this degree. Usability. Project management. Proposal writing. Instructional and information design. Multimedia. Web presence and accessibility. Content management and development. The list goes on and on. In one course, we worked with STC to establish the Technical Communication Body of Knowledge (TCBOK). It's a source for content in the technical communication field. I was fortunate to have contributed to it. The TCBOK is still accessible as I write this review. I attended a number of STC summits: - Minneapolis (2007) - Philadelphia (2008) - Atlanta (2009) - Dallas (2010) - Anaheim (2016) All summits were paid for my employer at the time. Last year, the summit was in Bloomington, MN. I asked my manager if I could go. My employer (specifically, my manager's manager) did not approve to fund it. I realize that times are tough. It kills me that I wasn't able to go. It never crossed my mind that it would be the last STC summit ever. Summits were great to network with other technical communicators -- to learn about cutting-edge trends with the best in the profession. I always learned so much and was inspired to take what I had learned and apply it to what I do at work. I will miss attending STC Toronto events. I remember attending my first one just north of Broadview station. It was great meeting folks from our chapter, learning about various topics, and having lunch. STC Toronto used to have a monthly gathering at The Pickle Barrel at Yorkdale Shopping Centre. It's so sad that these events are no more. I have good memories to cherish. STC was established in 1953. As the oldest professional society for technical communicators, it's even more painful to see such an established organization cease operations for good. I am thankful for its existence. From my vantage point, Fox News and arch nemesis MSNBC have nothing to worry about since NewsMax is about as bare bones as you can get. Pure ideology without entertainment is nap time.
