While driving to work today, I tuned into KLIV to hear the local news, but they've replaced it with country music. I knew this was coming, but figured with KGO also dropping news, they would of reconsidered, since they would pick up some new listeners. KCBS doesn't please everybody. KLIV had some really useful traffic reports, covering the expressways and local streets that the other stations won't even touch. Plus I will miss the secret sound contest! This is the most disheartening format change KLIV's made since they dropped their rock format years ago. read more

KLIV has fantastic coverage of bay area news. My wife is often surprised at my knowledge of local politics, local news, local events, and local vendors (via local advertisements). I know these things not because I subscribe to the Wall Street Journal, nor from reading the newspaper (I don't subscribe). I listen to KLIV every morning on my way to work. TIPS: * South bay traffic reports are every 7 minutes, and will tell you what freeway road sensors all over the bay area are picking up in the way of slow traffic, along with what the CHP is reporting in the way of accidents * At 8:57 a.m. they "dig to the bottom of the big stack of news stories" for funny, offbeat news (be listening between 8 and 9 for George Sampson to give you other offbeat news stories as he continues to dig all the way to the bottom) * Are you a foodie? Listen for Mr. Produce, Phil Cosentino, to tell you what fruits and vegetables are in season and what this year's crop tastes like. read more

I really do like this station I used to listen to the San Francisco station KCBS... but I don't live over there,that being said! Who is the guy in the early morning hours... who always says!!! Good Evening! When it's 3:52 am is this some sort of inside joke or something.....Can one of the older folks at the station please let this fellow know that even though it's dark outside around 4am!!! Been listening to KLIV for a few years now on my long drive from San Jose to Oakland in the morning and on the way home. They provide the best news coverage and I get traffic updates as well as the weather. If you don't like watching the news on television, this station will give you the very best updates. BTW - LOVE their contests especially because I WON one of them. Yep, $1,300 I won TODAY guessing the "Secret Sound". It happened to me and it can happen to you! read more

I havent listen to kliv when it was a news station but when i heard country, I was tuned in on all my receivers. I am so grateful to record 13 cassette tapes of 1590 kliv and play them back to hear country gold 1590 kliv announcement and memories. best country station to play great country music and I am still bummed and heartbroken that the station i sang to and heard great country music on is gone now. I've been listening to 1590 KLIV since I first went to college and it's been many years, I still heavily depend on them for local/world news and traffic. I used to split between KLIV & The Woody Show in the morning, but since TWS is no longer, it's all about KLIV now. They have the best personality on air, each and everyone of them. read more

1590 KLIV (AM) is the BEST place for news in San Jose/Silicon Valley. The station is locally-owned so they focus on San Jose area news, not SF. KLIV's traffic reports are very good and also focus on the South Bay. Even the ads tend to be for local businesses, something that I like. They run a lot of news the Mercury either ignored, or screwed up and they do investigative reports about local issues. The guys who are on in the morning give you the important news, but also dig up oddball and unusual stories that are fun and entertaining. Back in the 60s & 70s KLIV played Top 40, but it's been all-news since (I think) the 80's. They've had studios on Story Road as long as I can remember. read more

There is no better station for SouthBay Traffic reports. It's the 1st Station I turn on. Traffic reports every 8 mins. Much easier than being surprised. Turn it on first than drive, much easier. Lots of local information and CNN Headline news. You need to try this station! read more

I think KLIV is great I loved it when it was the South Bay Surfing station kind of sad to see that go but I guess everything has to grow. The only negative things is that ultra left wing editorial guy they have. If he was running the country with his viewpoint we'd at the very least be socialists but more than likely communistic. I loved 1590 KLIV from the moment I switched to it from KCBS, which was years ago. KLIV's coverage of San Jose and surrounding area, the traffic and weather, and various local issues were superior of those of KCBS which mostly focuses on the issues of small town called San Francisco and traffic on the fucking Bay Bridge. It is too bad that old and senile Bob Kieve fucked the station over and turned it into some trailer trash country station. This was one of the best local stations to listen to news, traffic and weather. Whoever owns this needs to throw themselves off a cliff. I understand in all the "news" that they were not making money, supposedly. I will not listen to 95.3 or 1590 from here on out. I hope the owner sells and someone else gets back to supporting local news, traffic and weather. I will never support someone in a small business who deems themselves the smartest person. This station is good in providing news for the Silicon Valley and traffic for the South Bay. But the their style is a little bid old fashioned - especially one of their reporter Jason's tone sounded very much like a guy from the horse racing filed. It's not something that's common compare to most of the other radios reporters who are speedy, precise and to the point. Sometimes, I had to switch station when he talks. But overall the station provides good news for the Valley. I would continue listen to it. read more

I switched to KLIV when KGO changed and got weird and I really liked KLIV for the short time that it endured. I love country western music too, but couldn't you also include local news? Also "country gold" doesn't just include the 1980's. I would like to hear country gold from the 60's & 70's. read more

Very disappointed in the lack of depth and any real local news coverage. Jason has a decent voice but George Sampson simply doesn't seem to have a command of facts when he 'interviews.' and his delivery just sounds extremely amateurish. The problem is this leaves KLIV sounding neither quite up to snuff with the big league radio stations that surround us, yet lacking that fun hometown feel truly servicing the local community. This is a shame. Perhaps the station's owner will change the programming leadership and this would solve the problem. read more

Switched over to KLIV when my hometown San Francisco radio station changed their weekend programming. (Was not happy after tuning into them for over 30 years) Glad I made the switch. Now I know what's going on in the South Bay, the special reports always capture my interest, the traffic report helps me decide how to get myself to work, George's professional delivery of the news as well as John's lead in's from the Sleep Train commercials and George's comments to the traffic make me crack smiles throughout the early morning. I could go on and on. My one complaint, there seems to be consistent static before 7am and after 5PM so I can't listen on the radio or in my car between those time periods when I'm in the Morgan Hill area. It's a mystery so no KLIV for me ... frustrating because I can't dial in to the secret sound contest and listening online is delayed. Nonetheless, give KLIV a try when you're brushing your teeth - guaranteed to keep you reaching for that dial when the alarm goes off. read more

Just what the Bay Area needs, yet another country music station. Very sad there is no local news station here anymore. Its all about the mighty buck. Just put on more "me too" music, automate it, and save all kinds of money. What a concept that a radio station should be serving the public. Its a shame the stations majority owner, Robert Kieve and his team couldn't bring in some local talent to go after corporate sponsorship and/or figure out a way to increase ad revenues and lower the cost of news gathering, especially in Silicon Valley. KLIV has been my primary source for news and traffic reports for many years. While commuting to work on these bay areas roads I am always on it. I wake up with beautiful George Samson's voice at 6 AM from my radio alarm clock. One fine day his voice was no where to be found. As a long-time Country music fan, listening to KNEW and KSAN years ago, I have longed for a country station that plays older tunes from the 70's, 80's and 90's, singers like George Strait, George Jones, Brooks and Dunn, Merle, Willie, Reba, etc. I just discovered KLIV on a.m. radio and am very happy with their song selection....if one likes newer artists and songs, KRTY f.m. is good, but I prefer the oldies...Good job! read more

1590 KLIV is the only radio station which gives me regular traffic updates. Also its fun to hear the conversation between some of the anchors during my morning commute thought we can do away with the singing news telecast in the evening. read more

Having become a fan of country in the last year, it is disappointing not to have a station that plays both the old & new, but this is the next best thing. I love how when I want my country gold fix, I can turn on these guys & when I want my hot country fix, I can turn KRTY (see my review.) I was pleasantly surprised when they converted from news to country. I lvove hearing some of the 70's they play as artists like Conway Twitty were a favorite of my mother's growing up. But, I especially love hearing all the 80's, 90's, & 2000's like Reba, Wynnona, Clint Black, Restless Heart, Faith Hill, Tinm McGraw, Alabama, Collin Ray, Little Texas etc. I am glad Tony Michaels is back on the air & it is wonderful hearing John McCloud who I remember from the KARA days along with Randy Jones, & the rest of the staff. I am amazed at how some of the them work at both stations which is a lot of hard work & dedication. The variety always keeps me listening for a long time. So, for a great variety of country gold with woinderful staff, KLIV cannot be beat. Keep up the good work guys. read more
