I stopped in during a road trip when I saw that this 2nd and Charles location was close to Interstate 95. These stores are a nerd nirvana with used books, manga, comics, games, toys, vinyl and more. This store was clean and well-organized and the employees were helpful. I found some obscure tabletop RPGs including a Goblin Slayer RPG and an OSR adventure called The Seven Deadly Skills of Sir Amoral the Misbegotten. My favorite finds are cheap weird stuff from publishers I've never heard of. It looks like 2nd and Charles is adding clearance sections to many areas -- I found them in horror, mystery and science fiction -- and this is a welcome improvement. Going here was a nice morning break from driving that conveniently had a popular food truck in the parking lot selling coffee. read more

Reposting this from Google. In 20+ years this is a place that has remained mostly unchanged that I know of, which says a lot itself.. Also, would like to highlight that the book buyback program is one factor that features great value. My daughter and I had a great time visiting 2-3 weeks back. Staff were super helpful and along with getting some used copies in great condition, we were also able to receive a discount (trip was within 30 days after the date of my birthday). They have clearance sections in multiple store areas where you can find discounts. I got a few $1 books. Would definitely go back if in the area. read more

My first visit here and I got stuck browsing every aisle and inch of the store. There are so many things to look at, odds, ends, books new/used, Pokémon, games on and on.. even socks. Bad QA and customer service. I bought a 2-disc Blu-ray set here while visiting a friend, but when I got home from my trip I found that the box contained only one of the correct discs. Nowhere on the box was there a message saying the contents differed from the label. Customer service took 11 days to respond to my email and is unwilling to do anything if I don't go to the store in person, which isn't feasible. read more

tried to sell an Xbox one and a ps3 on two seperate occasions 1st try I was informed that they do not accept drop offs an hour before they close, fair enough 2nd try I was told that they would not be able to evaluate the devices for two weeks, and so I would have to wait two weeks to get cash. which would mean another trip there basically don't try to sell anything, they will waste your time to offer you bum money read more

I love 2nd and Charles. It's the home of all the things I need to buy that I don't actually need at all. The sales people at the front desk are always aggressively helpful. I think they must work on commission for their loyalty club or something. But I've actually had to leave before in order not to punch somebody in the face. But not at this location. Didn't even cover the gas to drive there twice because you'll have to go back a week later to get your money. Almost wanted to take something just to not feel robbed. They advertise that they buy used books, cds, etc. When I inquired about it in the store I was given the impression that the salesperson was trying to discourage me from bringing anything in to sell because she didn't want to deal with it. I brought in a quilting pattern book that my wife and I had received for Christmas from my sister-in-law. It was a duplicate of one that we already had. The book was in mint condition. I was informed that it had water marks and that books of quilt patterns were unpopular and were not wanted. My overal treatment left me feeling like a leper and social outcast. The counter looked more like an assembly line of a factory complete with conveyor belts and multiple racks of books being processed. The clerk couldn't have been more impersonal and nastier. I responded by stating that I would give my book to the store and was told to leave it on a rack outside the store. I will never go back. read more

Even during COVID, this store is still amazing. They're running "curbside pickup". Essentially: call ahead or when you get there, give them a list of books you'd like, they shop for you, and then they bring the books out to you. ***They are doing credit cards only right now! *** Such a great store! Blows my mind that so many people have never been here before. If you love to read, this is the place for you. It is a resell store, but the books are so gently used and you can't beat the prices! I find $3-$4 books regularly! There are so many aisles to wander through, and the staff is so helpful! Great children's area/selection too! They generally have "free" bins outside. You can trade/sell your book collection for money or store credit. There's also movies, vinyl, comic books, video games, & novelty items. Buyer beware! I've bought hundreds of dollars worth of games here before and once in a while a game will not work and I will have to return it. Instead of returning it, they would refurbish it and give it back to me and it will work. last time I went in I asked the guy behind the counter if he could refurbish a game before I bought it because it was scratched to hell he proceeded to tell me that they do not have a disk buffer and could not do that for me... I told him I know you have a refurbisher because they will put it through the machine for me when it doesn't work. He then says OK we do have one, but I cannot do this for you... If it doesn't work bring it back for a return...That's fine with me just don't lie to your customers. The same employee also tried to tell another employee that I needed to be charged a refurbishing fee. When I tried to refurbish games I bought that do not work when I bought them! I told her I would just return them if that was the case and she refurbished them without charge...You can't sell broken games and then charge people to refurbish the game three days after they bought it broken from your store! The employees, talking loudly between themselves in the back, too busy talking to each other to help customers at the Glass case to pick out the more expensive items. I'm done with it. read more

I stopped on the way home during a rainstorm, i went here at the behest of a friend, said they had a good selection of preowned mangas.. this was severely inaccurate, the preowned selection was 1 row on a moving cart. None the less I perused the selection. By the time I was done I had 2 full baskets of new and preowned books. I was about to spend around $500. When o get to the register the lady asks me if I want to hand carry the purchase to the car. I replied why would I want to do that in this rain, my books would be ruined. She then informed me that id have to purchase bags at the sum of $4.99 each to carry them out. I asked for paper bags and was told they supply any of those. I told her it was unacceptable to expect a customer to pay for bags for the amount of books in was purchasing. I left books as she just stared blankly at me. read more

This store used to be Borders. When 2nd & Charles took over the store space, I had no idea what to make of it until I went in to look around. They have a lot of books, comics, music, movies, and fannish / Japanese / cutesy toys. Although 2nd & Charles sells used books, I'm not sure that all the items they have are used. I noticed that some books are priced like new and other books are priced at midway between new and thrift store. Even so, there's a lot to see and probably something for everyone. Of particular note are the free book baskets at the store entrance. It's the luck of the draw whether you'll find any good books there but I do check every time I visit 2nd & Charles. I've been using the free book baskets as a kind of lending library. I pick out any interesting books from there and return the books once I'm done with those. read more

This store used to be so nice and have so many friendly and helpful employees. There was a change in management recently and as someone with over 15 years in the field with several companies it definitely shows in the way customers are treated and spoken to. Incredibly rude and disrespectful staff, several of them don't seem to be trained properly in customer service or etiquette, no reason they should be sucking their teeth, sighing loudly or raising their voice when I ask them why something I've attempted to trade in was not accepted. While I believe this is a fine place to shop and buy I would not recommend selling here as they will nickel and dime you just as bad as any other mom & pop shop or GameStop. I can understand needing to turn a profit but you are better off selling your unwanted merchandise online if you're seeking maximum returns. I really hope they can turn it around soon as I and my friends and family used to love shopping here weekly, but if not I and everyone else is better off taking their business elsewhere. read more

This place is huge! Make sure to have some time to really explore. We stopped in because we love second hand stores and had no clue what to expect. This place is cool, they offer video games from Nintendo to Play Station 3. Additionally they have a huge inventory of books, comics, Music equipment, DVD's. and CD's. You can also trade or sell your old materials here as well. Everything is well organized and fun to browse though. Some stuff is a little over priced but understandable. Easily see this place becoming a new guilty pleasure. I love that I can recycle old books that I don't want to read again for new literary adventures. My only problem is the books are not really categorized but rather alphabetized by author name. You have to go in knowing what you want or you will leave empty handed. For instance I love autobiographies but there was no centralized section. In hindsight I should of probably pulled up my amazon wish list on my smart phone to jog my decrepit mind but... Another issue I encountered on my first visit was sweltering heat. I was shocked the store wasn't running or didn't have ac on a particularly hot day. You could tell the heat effected the employees and chased away many customers, including myself. I forgot to mention but the store also carries vinyl, good stuff too apparently. I watched a gleeful 20 something hipster flip through his selection of records with excitement reminescent of A Christmas Story Ralphie with his Red Ryder BB gun. The CDs are out of order (some bins are top-to-bottom, some bottom-to-top, but nothing is filed correctly anyway), * and there's nothing current, or old and obscure, or even old and cool. Maybe nothing cool comes into this store, due to the location. If you want 3 copies of the 2003 All American Rejects album or some Bobby Brown, come here. While I very much enjoy shopping for products at the actual store, and have always found the employees to be wonderful, this review is in reference to a magazine purchase add-on the store promotes. Do not, under any circumstances, sign up for the magazine offer which store associates promote. I believe it's three magazines for XYZ dollars or six-months free, something like that. Anyways, the company which processes the subscriptions for this 2nd & Charles promotion, Synapse Group Inc., is notorious for charging people's credit cards without authorization and will renew those subscriptions as soon as that free period is over at the maximum possible rate. I made this mistake, but don't let it happen to you. I'm in the process of trying to get my money back from the thieves at Synapse. read more

I found Atari 2600 games here! I found Super Nintendo games. My inner geek was dancing with joy. When they opened they offered super reasonable trade-in values but that has decreased gradually over time. Received under $1 for a book I saw for sale in the store for $16. Do not bring your items here to sell, especially if your items are in like new condition and you have loved them well. The amount that they offer you is a joke (in my case, the entire series of an HBO series on Blu-ray, for which I was offered mere dollars, single figure, while I saw one season of said show being sold for $30.) I expect a mark-up but not a 1000% mark-up. In addition to the poor offer, I was completely put off by the lazy employees working at the trade-in counter. There were at least four employees, and nobody besides me in line. Several of them were standing around chatting, one had her face buried in her cell phone and the other one appeared to be asleep. Yes, with his head resting on the counter, looking much like those kids you would see in study hall or in a Saturday detention (Breakfast Club?). Let's not bother him, as he apparently needs his beauty rest. Needless to say, I will not be back to buy or sell. Yes they have lots of cool and quirky items, but it's nothing that you can't find anywhere else... I'm looking at you, Amazon. read more

When it first started it was good. The prices were good and with double the payout for items sold to them, it was worth taking stuff there. Now the prices have been raised for used books to 1/2 to 3/4 of the full retail price. The payout is so low for items traded in - maybe .50 cents a piece. It's insulting, really. So..... If they have a sale it might be worth it. Otherwise, forget them. read more

I love this store! I always find all sorts of cool books and knick knacks for a great price. The book setup can be a bit confusing the first few times but I got a hang of it eventually. You can tell what a store's target demographic is by the layout, product selection, and so forth. 2nd and Charles (or at least this one) seems targeted at the "nerd / hipster" demographic, which is fine by me - they have lots of stuff I like. They have literature and movies and things outside these interests, too, but those items don't seem anywhere near as organized and curated, and the checkout line is hemmed in by comic books, Transformers, Star Wars, and other similar paraphernalia. They also run events like "Free RPG day" here. The store seems to have bulk-purchased the entire inventory of the Barnes & Noble that used to be here, as several books still have the old B&N sticker on the back. If you're looking for slightly dated books at amazing prices, then you have come to the right place. Considering that a lot of the inventory of the store is only available from eBay or Amazon sellers who will of course charge $4+ in shipping, the $2.50 - $5 price tags on paperbacks are a steal. You do need to come in here with a shopping list. There is a lot of stuff here, but not all of it is worthwhile, and the inventory doesn't turn over quite that fast - you could be looking for a series of books (say, one with 40-100 books in the series - e.g., Hardy Boys or something) and not see new titles in the series be added to the shelf even in the span of a year. If you come in to browse you will spend hours. Come in with your Amazon list for used books and you'll likely pick up some gems, though. read more

First of all, I gave this 3 stars because I LOVE shopping here. It's one of my favorite destinations. The reason I only gave it three stars was because of how much this company shorts their sellers. I brought in almost 40 mint condition manga graphic novels and waited an hour and a half for them to let me know how much they could give me. The store wasn't busy. VERY disappointed with the experience while I was visiting this location. My boyfriend and I drove one 1/2 hours to this store to trade in products. This store closes at 10 pm we got there right before 8 pm. While loading the products into the bins a lady came up to us and told us that the trade in section was closed. TWO HOURS BEFORE THE STORE CLOSES. We didn't have an abundant amount of products to trade in. As soon as she said something she starts posting all the signs about the section being closed. I would have understood if we came to the store late and they told us this but it was TWO hours before the store was closing. She was a lazy employee that didn't feel like checking the products. I have always been a loyal Charles shopper. We ended up going to a local trade in place & I truly don't think I will be giving my stuff to this company anymore. read more

I grew up near here. I now live in Baltimore MD and I STILL haven't found a better used book store better than 2nd and Charles. Whenever I make a trip home I make it a priority to pa rouse their vinyl collection, grad some best sellers, and incense. LOVE this place! read more
