This charming little bookshop offers great deals on books, but the best part is the owner. The…read morestaff is very helpful and knows a lot about choosing books for my teens and tweens. They suggested several new series for us to try. The books are in excellent condition, and the store is clean and well-kept. Prices are reasonable, and there were even free advance publisher copies at the entrance! Other customers were friendly too. We left with a big stack of new books and are excited to enjoy a nice Sunday reading them. Next time, we plan to sell our used books in good condition to make space on our shelves. What a fun idea!

I met him immediately upon entering the store, as he was sitting right near the door. His name is Dr. Pickles and he is just as lovely as the shop he calls home. The shop itself is well organized and has so many niche categories to browse and appreciate. As the shop's name suggests, they have ample signage outlining the rules and guidelines for trading with them. As a bonus, the shop (and Dr. Pickles!) are active on Instagram sharing the latest that's up with the shop. I am absolutely planning on returning to this shop during my next trip to Philadelphia.

For that reason the books sold focus primarily on the Quakers, Quakerism, and other topics that would be of interest to Quakers and other spiritual seekers. It is not a place to go and pick up the newest best-selling mystery or romance novel. If you are looking for a bookstore focusing on Quaker publications there probably isn't a better one in the country. Even if you're not looking for Quaker publications, but are looking for texts on spiritual matters this bookstore would be an excellent resource for you.

They're especially strong in children's picture books and in books relating to Quakerism (the store is part of Pendle Hill, a Quaker retreat and study center). The books are arranged in thoughtful categories-- peace and social justice, writing, lives in transition, etc. The proprietor is friendly and full of suggestions. I walked out with a couple great books to add to my collection, and will be back soon to pick up some more! My favorite thing about this store is that they offer hard to find books for a great price. They have an extensive Pennsylvania section which includes biographies about many of of the small colleges dotting the southeast part of the state, and a large amount of genealogical books as well. I was strapped for time and didn't get a chance to explore the entire store, but the sections I perused left me with a great feeling about the place. The lady who helped me check out was extremely friendly as well. Have already recommended this store to a couple friends and family, and I will personally be making the trip back out as soon as next week. Highly recommend!

The owners of THIS store have been in the book business for a while. Both put in years at a large chain bookstore. They've used that experience to create a store people WANT to shop. I found some obscure tabletop RPGs including a Goblin Slayer RPG and an OSR adventure called The Seven Deadly Skills of Sir Amoral the Misbegotten. My favorite finds are cheap weird stuff from publishers I've never heard of. It looks like 2nd and Charles is adding clearance sections to many areas -- I found them in horror, mystery and science fiction -- and this is a welcome improvement. The bargain book area, which is always my fave place to check for steals, isn't as big as I used to be.
