I came to SugarHill Recording Studios with bosslady Andrea R to meet with fellow yelper and SHRS extraordinaire, Gina M. Unbeknown to us, there was a recording session going on in one of the studios for Stan Keeton. We were later approached to take part in the session. Alas, my big break. So there we were, standing with cups, keys, spoons and other nifty noisemakers giving off sounds of holiday cheer. After about three takes, we finally nailed it. Back to SugarHill and what it's all about. SugarHill isn't just a recording studio. With more than 65 years in the bizz, Houston's historical music scene is what it is because of SugarHill. Names like Lightnin' Hopkins, The Rolling Stones, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Selena, Janis Joplin, Jermaine Duprie, Destiny's Child, Clay Walker, Southern Backtones and countless others have recorded here. The studio facilitates two recording studios, an amazingly talented staff of engineers, vintage equipment, a tape vault and other highlights to help create your perfect album. What many don't know is that SugarHill is open for anyone to rent out, and that can cost as little as $70 an hour. I like to consider myself as someone who knows a lot about the city, but I am shamed to say that I had no idea that SugarHill was right in Houston's backyard. Glad I *finally* caught on. A side note for everyone, Friday November 28, 2pm, SugarHill Recording Sessions will air on 90.1 KPFT (or on stream at kpft.org). The monthly broadcasted Sessions will introduce independent artists to the city by featuring unique talent straight from the studio. Tune in!

So I came here the other day to record my new album.... Bet…read moreya didn't know I was a singer, did you? OK, I'm NOT...the only singing I do is in the shower, but I think the peeps at SugarHill could even make me sound good! So the real reason Miss Farrah A and I were here was to hang with fellow yelper, Gina M. Gina is a lucky gal because she works for SugarHill! She gave us a fun tour of the place that has recorded hits for many artists including Destiny's Child, Lyle Lovett, etc. We met lots of engineers and other people who work here and they all greeted us with a big smile. I'd be smiling lots too if I got to listen to cool music all day long! While Beyonce wasn't at SugarHill the day we were there (darn- must have been elsewhere with her boy Jay-Z) there was a very nice older gentleman recording a xmas song. Farrah and I both commented that it sounded like a country xmas song. Only in Texas- right? It turned out that the country xmas singer needed some background noise for his song so he asked Farrah, Gina, I, and a few others to chit chat in the background and pretend we were at a holiday party. I may not be able to sing, but I can chit chat and party until I'm blue in the face so this was the perfect job for me! Unfortunately, I wasn't as talented as I thought and we had to do this over 3 times, but now i feel very experienced in fake party talk. So a few weeks from now you'll be able to buy my first song (stay tuned for the name of the singer!), recorded by SugarHill....just listen for that chit chat in the back!! I checked out Studio713 in the Warehouse District of downtown Houston earlier this week to see what…read moreresources were available. They offer everything from audio and video production, photography, and the use of a cyclorama (675 sq space with lighting). For video production, they use cinema-quality RED® cameras. When entering the studio, there was a plaque on the wall showcasing that Justin Bieber actually recorded his vocals for DJ Snake's "Let Me Love You" at this location. I met with Tyler Casper, the head of Studio713's video department, and nerded out with him in the Cyclorama. Half of it was painted white, and the other half was a bright green for any green screen shots. I personally do similar type of work, so it was actually refreshing to communicate with another professional who actually knows what he's talking about. When it comes to art and production, it's best to work with people who are passionate and educated about what they are doing. I really liked my experience at Studio713. Whenever I need some extra help on a project whether I need audio or video production, photography, or even studio space, I know exactly where to go. I do some voiceover work now and then, and can admit that the older I get, the worse my voice sounds. I went in yesterday open and honest about how my voice has become more nasal in recent years. I had the good fortune of working with Caleb, who helped me break down the transcript in to workable segments, and coached me through each take to make it sound clean and clear. After the transcript was recorded he went to work cleaning up the audio. By the time he was done I couldn't even hear myself breathe. The entire team is a class act, from the time I walked through the door until the time I walked out. Everyone I've spoken with is professional. You get what you pay for here and sometimes a bit more. I've had some sessions where we were finishing up a few things that ran over time some and my engineer just went ahead and finished. They also account for a lunch break during the session that you aren't charged for. I've only worked with David as my engineer because I've gotten a cool vibe with working with him. I've only been to 2 studios in Houston but I would most definitely recommend this one.

The staff is incredibly friendly and very welcoming and accommodating. I had a fantastic engineer and the talent and I were taken care of very well here. The talent was already extremely comfortable on the premises because they had already been there several times and were cool with the owner and staff. My experience with Wire Road spans about 6 months. I'm torn because I've heard some great things…read moreabout the engineering staff and their work, but due to the personal experiences of myself and others in dealing with one of their staff members I am forced to leave this review. My experience started with an old client of mine who remains a friend calling and telling me that he was recording at Wire Road and happened to step out of the studio to go to the restroom during his session. He said when he opened the door he heard yelling and when he turned the corner he was confronted with one of the employees who is not an engineer sitting at the front desk and screaming at an intern until his face was flushed with embarrassment and he could not even lift his head. The client told me that he was in disbelief because the guy at the desk was speaking to the intern as though he wasn't human. He said seriously, I wouldn't speak to a dog that way!" To make matters worse he said another engineer was sitting on the couch in the other room and never even looked up from the tv so I assume they're used to it-which if this is true is extremely sad. I started in my industry as an intern so maybe the feeling of being worked all day for free while trying to pick up actual job skills and being belittled the entire time is a sore spot for me. Anyway, I told my friend that he should have said something, and I endeavored in my mind to never send a client there. A few weeks later I had to complete a Custom Pricing Analysis which meant calling different studios to compare the cost of a specialized project and Wire Road was on my list. I spoke to someone named Billy who answered the phone pleasantly enough, but as soon as I asked about studio rates he began to cut me off and yell. He started asking about how many tracks I had which I thought meant songs but as I began to answer he cut me off again and began yelling "You clearly don't know the difference between a track and a song! I'm asking you how many tracks did the original engineer use to create the song!" Now, I don't know what this had to do with anything since I work for a firm and was trying to explain that we already had the music created and just needed to cut the entire spot (voice and music) to 30 seconds. I have never spoken with anyone so unprofessional so I just said, "Ok, thank you," to end the call but I had my office phone on speaker and did not immediately reach over to disconnect it. I could hear him in the background complaining about my call saying, these people don't even ask about the Engineer or the room, its like people are so concerned about pricing that they don't care if the engineer knows his shit as long as the price is cheap enough!" I was fuming because I thought the whole point of me telling you about the project was so that you would recommend the correct studio and possibly the engineer who fit best. Also, I would assume that every engineer that you employ is capable and knows how to use your equipment at an expert level so why would I question their credentials? Well when that call ended I was DONE with Wire Road, but I got a call about 4 months later from a friend who is one of the sweetest people on the face of this earth. She wanted to surprise her son with Studio Time for his 18th Birthday, she asked me to make the calls for her since I work in the industry and she added that after seeing the equipment on the website he really had his heart set on Wire Road as his first choice. My heart sank! I explained about the intern and about my awful call with Billy and seeing as how her son just got approved for his first internship for next summer she was very disappointed. I asked if maybe I could reach out to the other studios and she could make The Wire Road call. She did not feel comfortable and felt like she would get ripped off, but she asked if I could call with her on the other line and said that if things got out of hand for some reason she would step in and explain that she was a novice and maybe get him to show some extra mercy. (FYI I think it's incredibly ridiculous to call someone and offer to spend hundreds of dollars and pray that they are kind or merciful but she was calling the shots). Also, Linda is such a kind person that I've seen her disarm many a hard-hearted person over the years so I agreed. We placed the call and Billy answered again (Oh Joy) Needless to say that he was every bit as rude as he was the first time I spoke to him and dear sweet Linda who never loses her cool sent me a text that simply said, "Hang up in his face right now!" GLADLY Let me end by saying I don't want to lump all of Wire Road together because I've heard that other people there are really nice though but I must say it's very difficult to believe that if an employee is mistreating clients and other employees alike and they never confront him about it aren't they just as complicit?

I rented out a DJ Studio. Sometimes you need a place to practice outside of your home. Nice clean…read moresafe and secure building. Booking was super easy online. Instructions are sent to your email for acess to the building. The equipment on site was a pair of CDJ 3000s and a DJM S11 as the mixer. Pretty much premium high quality equipment. Room can accommodate up to 5 people, but might be a little tight. 24/7 line is available if you need it. I will definitely be back for another session. You save if you book more than 4 hrs.I would probably book an extra 30 mins for setup and takedown. Gives you a chance to figure out new equipment and get your bearings before you start jamming. Only minor downsides: Lounge and store was closed when I went in on a Saturday morning. That's ok I snacked ahead of time, but I wanted some merch to support. I'd recommend maybe putting up "exit/entry only" signs on the parking lot gates. When leaving, I sat waiting for the gate to open, but then I just reversed my car and went to the other gate. I am definitely booking more sessions in the future.
