The one which stood out was Pea Porridge but when I stood outside lamenting upon how expensive their fabulous menu was, I simply turned 90 degrees anti-clockwise and into The Old Cannon Brewery. This turned out to be an excellent alternative, especially the hot-smoked salmon Caesar salad for starter. I'd never had a salmon Caesar before but this made me want more. For mains, I opted for the sausages, which were really tasty as was the summer fruits pudding afterwards. For vegetarians, rather than having separate menu items, some of the existing dishes are also available in vegetarian format. Being a microbrewery, their own beers appealed to me rather than bigger commercial names and it was good to see that they made a range of beers which could be tried in tasting trays of 3 or 6. I had chosen 2 of them (Stout and Black Pig) before I went through the door but these were not available. Only 3 of their ales were on (Best Bitter, Brewer's Daughter and Blonde Bombshell) so I had them. It was good to see on the menu that the brews contributed to the food through their own beer batter.

The Larger fans are well catered for and there is now a choice of American bottled beers that you will be hard put to find locally. The reason for the short notice was another Turkish establishment in Ely, who shall remain nameless and which we will never patron ever again, canceled on us. When we reached out to Kirsty and her staff, and explained our predicament, they were very understanding and professional. They not only accommodated our group, but the food had been previously coordinated in advance and we did not have to wait long for it, and it was very delicious. Had a decent curry, which they put together for me quickly as by the time we had gotten there (15 minute walk from the station) we only had 30 minutes there before we had to start making our way back to the station. Grabbed a pint, ate my curry somewhat leisurely, and sauntered back to the station. We really should have moved faster, as we got there 2 minutes before our train arrived and almost missed it again! :-) Next time I'm here I'll stay a bit longer, for sure.

My wife, son, and I decided to stop in for dinner here after our trip to Ely to see the cathedral, castle mount, and the other touristy offerings of this unassuming English village. (We had a wonderful time perusing the little town, but that's another matter altogether). We saw this place on our way towards the big attractions and decided to give this place a shot on our way out. We are so glad we did... From the front door you are greeted with their small, unassuming bar and a foyer area where you can sit and drink your pint. A few of the locals were there already imbibing and enjoying a few and were helpful in making my selection of what to drink this evening. We arrived at 4pm and had to wait for 5pm for dinner to be served, but no worries, we past the time playing family games they had for offerings while we waited for the dinner time to arrive. Once it did, we each chose what we preferred from the menu. I chose the quintessential Bangers and Mash, while my wife had their steak, and my son had a hamburger on pretzel bun - all of it arrived fast, fresh, and delicious. As an appetizer we picked the mozzarella balls - a bit small but still tasty and still enough for the three of us. For dessert we each had their sticky toffee pudding with chocolate cake and salted caramel ice cream - it was to die for. The indoor decor is classic "British Pub" to me - all the wood tables, chairs, the dim lighting, it all simply looked good. They also have the biggest and most extensive beer garden I have ever laid my eyes upon - easily a place that can cater a big event like a wedding or big-number birthday. (I know I would celebrate one here, without a doubt.) I think the only nit on the place was the service - though friendly and efficient, I wish they had been a bit more attentive - especially since we ate early on what appeared to be a slow Thursday night. I had a Stilton ploughman's lunch followed by a Fenland Sticky Cake to which I added some clotted cream. I must say that I liked the Fenland Sticky Cake enough just to go back another day to remind myself what it was like and yes, I still liked it as much the second time. I even got more clotted cream second time round than first!

You can sit inside or outside, either way you will see the scenic backdrop surrounding this quaint place. Whether you choose to sit in the restaurant or the tea room makes no difference as the menu is the same. The menu consists of sandwiches, jacket potatoes, Ciabattas, platters, deserts and, of course, an English cream tea. Even sitting here with a pot of tea is peaceful and relaxed and, often, as you sit and sip away you will hear the friendly ducks waddling about. This truly is a hidden gem.
