Not the cheapest, not the biggest, but probably the overall best. Arthur and his family do a bang up job of providing wonderful meals and friendly service to visitors and locals alike. Always two cask ales on tap (usually Greene King IPA and Timothy Taylor's Landlord), a few draught beers and ciders, and a small bottle selection. Quite the gin selection, too, as well as a wine list. You'll be sure to find locals sitting in the cozy fire warmed pub section in the winter, or enjoying the beautiful shaded garden in the summer. There is a great restaurant - full of English charm and the food is just what you expect and need from a proper British boozer. The essentials of a pool table and dart board are also in place! There is a function room and private dining room (we had a good nosey around) and there are murals on one wall of the famous faces that used to frequent - Rod Stewart, Noel Edmonds, U2 and various famous faces from an epic time in British music history. It's not a music venue as such now but there are occasional bands, quiz nights and other events on. Worth checking in if you are passing through or are nearby. Acts such as U2, Status Quo, Thin Lizzy and John Peel himself are all said to have played there in their early career. Obviously the pub has changed radically since those heady days of rock and roll. The old hall upstairs which was used as the club can still be hired out for events. With its large windows and stripped floor it has a fantastic charm for an intimate wedding or celebration. However, you will be pleased to hear that there is no evidence of the 70's disco that it used to be. The restaurant downstairs is a revelation to the village. Chris the head chef has brought high quality dining to the area much like his predecessor brought quality rock bands. His menu is interesting without being pretentious with classics such as game, steak and chicken sitting beside a great fish menu. The selection changes regularly so each time there is something new to try. His wine list is also very strong and we have enjoyed many a night sampling a range of grape derived delights. The pub offers private dining as well as the hall and restaurant so it can cater for family groups of up to 10 or 12 people. On the nights we have been there the place has been busy so I recommend booking ahead of time. In conclusion I would highly recommend this place if you are in mind for top notch food in a historic setting.

We delivered our choices and were seated at the table. Still wearing our outdoor wear. Which we had to put on the back of our seats. The dining area was clean, and quite modern, a real distinct difference from the rest of the pub, though it was done well, even though it looked like we had almost walked into another establishment. I ordered a fillet steak as my main, and i was pleased when it came out, it was wonderful and cooked as ordered. It was delectably succulent and juicy. After an amazing, main course we opted to try the desert. Awful, the crème brulée, was a soggy mess, with very little flavor, yuk!! At all times during the meal, we felt as though we were being spied upon by the servers, as the gravitated around our table like mini satellites. It was not like they needed our table to serve new guests since there were only three diners in the restaurant. Unless the other tables and chairs were part of the decor, who knows? The last point was the bathroom was outside the pub, it was however clean and functional. Overall, pleasant experience, good mains, mediocre service, average pricing at a guess around 30-40 pounds a head, more including wine. I would probably try again, just because it is local.

They specialise in Fish and I strongly recommend going for it and trying some of the more exotic ones. Service is good with attentive yet discreet staff. Price is quite high but certainly worth it for the quality of the meal. Overall I recommend The Griffin as really good restaurant ideal for special occasions or taking the wife to if you have made a mistake.

They also hold quiz nights which are very hard but a lot of fun! This pub does not really get any trouble and it tends to attract people from their 20s to 60s so one for all ages really as it has something for everyone. They also sell food which I have never had the pleasure of trying, but the smell of Sunday Roast coming from the pub on a Sunday afternoon is divine. If you are in Rushden then this is a well established pub that you should try.

I went for lunch on a Wednesday just before Christmas. The new landlord/landlady have done a great job cleaning the pub up from what I remembered it as. They have guest cask conditioned real ale (always a bonus) and a good food menu. I had the fish and chips, and it was excellent. Decent prices and I would certainly drop in again when I am in the home town.
