R.E.M. 40th Anniversary Chronic Town benefit.
    Annette J.

As a huge R.E.M. fan since I was wee kid I've held 40 Watt Club in regard for many, many, years. In 2008 I was able to check it out for the first time during a visit when Athfest was going on and I was lucky enough to catch locals Elf Power perform on that hallowed stage. Several months back, when my husband and I saw that there would be two R.E.M. Murmur anniversary shows with special guests we knew we had to go (my husband is also a huge R.E.M. fan). I had my finger on the button for their eventbrite page the moment the tickets went on sale and I was lucky enough to snag a pair of only a few hundred tickets to this special night. To say we were excited is an understatement! But this isn't a review about the show (though it was incredible, you can see my photos for a play by play of the guests) but the venue. And the venue itself is also amazing. My memory from 2008 is hazy so I can't tell if much has been updated but it feels very new without being new, if that makes sense? Maybe a better word would be that it felt very well cared for. And because of that I can tell you it's one of the best small club venues I've ever been to. The stage isn't anything fancy but the sound is great and there isn't a bad view in the house, drinks are reasonably priced, and the staff was beyond nice. it was pouring rain while we were waiting to get in and they worked really hard to get us all in quickly when the doors opened. Merch staff was also really friendly. I'm proud to sport my 40 Watt t-shirt around town here in Ann Arbor. From one college town to another, Athens--you're lucky to have this gem!

If you've been to the 40 Watt, you already know. If you haven't been, read on. The 40 Watt is an iconic venue that has hosted and continues to host bands that ordinarily play much larger rooms. Its capacity is about 500 which means you will have a good view of the stage pretty much no matter where you are standing, and the sound quality is likewise great no matter where you might be standing. With limited exceptions, it's standing room only. The 40 Watt is located in downtown Athens with lots of great places to eat nearby within easy walking distance, which is a definite plus. The entry drill goes like this: They check your name off their list a ticket buyers for the particular show. Then there is a very non-invasive security check, then you get a wrist band that allows you to go outside to smoke or whatever in the provided space for that with a lengthy bench for sitting, then you present ID to get or not get a hand-stamp that allows you drink if you or over 21, and you're in. Believe me when I tell you it's not a hassle at, which the above might make it sound like. Once inside, you will see two bars on either side of the room - one on the right side and one on the left side. It's full bar with a nice selection of beers. I tend to favor the beers put out by Creature Comforts, which is a local Athens brewery. One of the many nice things about this place is they do NOT gouge you on drink prices, which is unusual for a music venue of this caliber. If I'm not mistaken, the beers go for about $6.00 each. You can't beat that. The stage is raised to a pretty much perfect height for the room. There is no barricade, and from what I could tell the four nights I was there a barricade is not needed at this venue. The staff are great, and every staff member I encountered over four nights was unfailingly nice and friendly, which isn't always the case at many music venues. Another nice thing is they do not shoo you out when the show is over. They let you hang for bit and grab another drink or two so long as it's not past 2:00 a.m. I flew in to Atlanta from Southern California to see the Drive-by Truckers play their annual four-night homecoming series of shows. As expected, the 40 Watt and the Truckers did not disappoint. Without equivocation, the 40 Watt is one of the greatest places in the country to see a show. Cheers! p.s. My pics are better if you click on them.

Love it. Especially the LIVE SHOWS! I did a belly dance performance last winter at 40 Watt, and it was so fun. I invited my friends to come watch show, and they enjoyed it and the bar. I'm gonna do another belly dancing performance at the end of this April. Everyone who's interested, please come and have fun with me !!!!!

Nice venue! We saw Mitski and Jay Som here. So intimate, great acoustics! It is worth noting that it's in a college town, so many of the people attending were students. Not necessarily a bad thing, but be aware! There was a cover charge for people under 21; not sure if this is always a thing or if t was just this show.

LIVE WIRE FILTERS OUT THEIR GOOGLE REVIEWS, SO YOU CAN NOT LEAVE AN HONEST REVIEW THERE…read more We are writing to express our profound disappointment with the event coordination for our 20-year reunion. The experience was incredibly unprofessional, and the Class of '04 Reunion Committee felt disrespected after having paid for your services. Initially, we selected Live Wire based on the positive reviews on your social media platforms. However, after checking other review sites like Yelp, it became clear that our negative experience was not unique. We encountered significant issues with conflicting information about the services provided by your staff. Despite multiple attempts to contact our event coordinator, Erika, we did not receive clear or consistent answers to our questions. During our visit on June 25th, we were given conflicting information yet again, but your general manager, Algy, and other staff were the most pleasant and spoke with us with the level of customer service a paying client expects. Attempts to visit the venue during stated hours of operation were fruitless, as the venue was closed each time. Given the high cost of renting this venue, we expected a much higher level of service and professionalism. After speaking with the owner, Erin, we were told that we were "wasting her time" because she and other members of management had to be involved when our event coordinator, Erika, went unresponsive and we weren't getting our questions answered. Erin also mentioned that she shouldn't be communicating with one of the committee members because they weren't the point of contact, yet she was willing to take an additional $350 from our classmate for an extra hour to set up. This inconsistency was unacceptable. This business is in the hospitality and customer service industry, and Live Wire's conduct was severely lacking. We have never heard of an event coordinator not assisting with coordination. When our class representative was told Erika was not an event planner, we were already aware. However, when we expressed our concerns to Erin and Algy, their responses were contradictory. Live Wire can certainly learn from Algy, who communicated professionally while being informative and addressing our issues. If your event coordinator was unable to fulfill the responsibilities of the role, then it raises questions about the standard of service provided. If this venue could not handle event coordination, it should not have taken on the responsibility. Here's the link to UGA's Event Planning and Meeting Management Certificate. Given that this is a college town, as Erin pointed out, perhaps Live Wire could benefit from this training to better reflect professionalism in its operations. On July 4th, we received an email stating changes to our contract and confirmation that the $350 was received for the additional setup hour. Yet, they weren't the point of contact, but the money was taken. As of July 7th, Erin responded to a message indicating that yet again, misinformation was provided. Erin, you stated in your email that you said the same thing as Erika to our class representative, which you certainly did not do. Our class representative even confirmed with you multiple times prior to leaving regarding the timeline for dropping off tablecloths at 2 pm. It's a good thing that in the state of Georgia, you have the right to record conversations as long as one person is aware, and when they spoke with you, the committee was also on the phone and heard the entire conversation. You also forgot to mention that you said if your staff shared the information regarding tablecloths or any items being dropped off and set up before our arrival, you would have to speak with your team. Sounds like a lack of communication amongst your staff that had nothing to do with the client. The fact that you blatantly lied about your conversation in an email truly shows this venue for what it is. Neither you nor Erika owned up to any customer service lapses, which was mind-blowing. On July 8th, Erika finally reached out to our point of contact by phone and provided direct contact information, less than four days before our event. The simple fact that there was a thread going back and forth between your event coordinator and our point of contact prior to July 8th and your event coordinator went unresponsive is what warranted the call for clarity yet again. And it seems that both you and your event coordinator are on the same page when it comes to telling the customer to make sure we have a great time at the event and not to worry about logistics leading up to it. So, you wanted us to put trust in the fact that everything would work itself out, but your business has made that impossibly hard to do.

My experience here left a lot to be desired…read more If you are attending a large conference here, please be advised that they DO NOT have sufficient parking for all attendees. You will likely have to take rideshare or find somewhere else far away to park. When I attempted to park upon arriving at the Classic Center, an employee who was stationed outside the parking garage (to let people know it was full) pointed me toward parking for the courthouse a couple blocks away. When I drove over there, a courthouse employee told me that parking there is not allowed unless one has official courthouse business. So not only is their parking area very small, but they do not even give accurate information about where alternate parking can be found. It was incredibly frustrating. I ended up driving around for 30 minutes and finally settling for an expensive lot nearby just so I could get to my conference. Signage within the venue is virtually non-existent and employees are few and far between if you happen to have questions or need assistance. It's like they expect that everyone visiting this place has been many times before and knows the lay of the land, which is decidedly not the case. The sole reason I am giving two stars is because they did not skimp on air conditioning. It was on in full force the entire time I was at my conference, which is beyond necessary given the outdoor temperatures averaging 95 degrees with 80%+ humidity when I was in Athens. I would not have expected the air conditioning situation to go off without a hitch given the remainder of my experience here, but sometimes there are small silver linings.
