I love Franklinton Fridays. I have been going for years. I love the art. I love the people. It's like a mini Columbus Arts Festival every month. I'm concerned with the sudden spike in rent for tenants. Starting an art career is difficult, and I fear the spike in prices will merely gentrify the area and force the artists out. That being said, I am also frustrated by the group that hangs out at the corner of W. Rich and Lucas St during a number of events. I have run into them multiple times, worked with them, and they are always very aggressive. They try to get people to donate for their calendars. When I go to Franklinton Fridays, I want to invest in local art. I don't want to be guilted for not volunteering enough or not donating to their specific cause. Please address this. read more

What a neat space and great use of an older structure! We stopped in on Franklinton Friday, and it was hopping! It was neat to see the wide variety of art that is being made in the numerous galleries along each hallway and around each corner: jewelry, painting, drawings, costumes, and all sorts of fascinating pieces. The artists we spoke with were friendly and welcoming. The building itself was also intriguing and it was very fun to explore the winding hallways and stairs. It really has a lot of character. 400 West Rich is one of the best places in Columbus for local art. It's home to many artists and studios. The area is still kind of scuzzy but it's improved from what it was. It's a great use of a crappy old building. There's also several hipster attractions near it. I had never been in the building before going to a food truck event. It was the home of the indoor food truck area. There was enough space to fit several inside, and there was a seating area on the middle of them. It was great getting food trucks and not have to stand in lines sweating. It unfortunately no longer does this. A few other businesses are on the building. This is the home of Strongwater. As for the building itself, it's better than it looks. The outside wall is covered in artistic graffiti, and the inside has lots of room to display artwork and house events for anyone interested in that kind of stuff. If you like art you should get to 400 West Rich. It's the home of many local artists. When you're done visiting you can go to a number of great bars and restaurants that are popping up by there. read more

I had been meaning to visit this place since last year and was finally glad I did! I came for Franklinton Friday's and it was so worth it. Sooo many rooms and things to see. They've even got an upstairs too. They also showcase STEAM, a group from OSU who get to display their art. Pretty cool to see this kind of collaboration in the community. We came around 9 so it wasn't packed but there were still a lot of people hanging around. Everyone was nice. We mostly browsed but enjoyed the music some spaces were playing, free wine, mints, and cookies. Some rooms sold pottery, clothes, photography, paintings, drawings, candles, sculptures, etc. Pretty cool that this event is free! You can also find free parking easily in their parking lots or parallel parking. I purchased a shirt from one dude whose brand is called Embien. Check him out! He was super awesome. I saw a ton of hipsters, college students, and people who probably came here straight after work. Love seeing this type of stuff in Columbus! You will see me here again! read more

I was so fortunate enough to call 400 West Rich my artist home for a few years, so it was bittersweet to hand in those keys and head off to a new artistic journey. As a tenant, the property has that wonderful edgy feel with raw concrete floors waiting for paint splashes, and marks of work. My time on the 2nd floor was enjoyable, as I had the most gorgeous view of some of the Columbus Skyline. Sunsets were magical and the buildings changed different shades and hues, while breezes crept through the old original pane glass windows, cracked just enough to allow fresh air to seep in. Monthly shows are curated, and often times open for tenants to submit work into. 400 housed multiple different genres of art, it's not just painters. There's ceramist, wood workers, fashion designers, costume designers, metal worked, jewelry.... even OSU steam factory, so SCIENCE, Baby! The maintenance staff had to be just as creative as the artists when handling challenges to the older structure, and building, but they were on hand frequently to help with pop up water installations after large rain storms, and other old building issues. The area around here has changed in the span of months. With the new development and breweries popping up, the fear of safety is no longer an issue, which was not the case a year, or two ago. It was still a relatively questionable area, but now you'll find that parking is limited, and hipsters are abound zipping by on scooters, and vespas, or lounging packed like sardines on BrewDog's balcony. Change happens, it's inevitable. 400 is still a great place with talent, but the days of late night parties, and the strong smell of recreational....yeah wafting through the air with jams vibrating the walls are a long lost memory started with a dream, and a lot of crazy ideas. This isn't the edgy hole in the wall place that you knew a few years ago, it's definitely been refined into some sort of commercial entity, but it's still a working part of the Cbus Art scene and deserves credit for it's work and being a part of revitalizing F-ton. Still worth a visit. Their doors are open to public every 2nd Friday of the month, and some occasional Wednesdays. There's typically no food other than the occasional food truck that might park on the road, but there's still options like Strongwater, Rehab Tavern, Brewdog, and Ray-rays outside of Land Grant. Exploring the dark halls, docks, and bays of this ancient industrial space makes for good sanctuary from Art Fest elements every June when they open up the reused factory to showcase and sell works made there. It is a stroll among the best painting in the area. Unfortunately, I have never used 400 neither as an event space, nor, considering I can't pencil a halfway done stick-man, as a work space. So I really can't speak to that. So I'll just review it as a collector, a visitor, as a (gulp!) "a consumer." The art I find here is fantastic. Usually on the large size--some could be considered murals-- often feature brilliantly colored abstract splashes, realistic illustrations, and macabre surrealism. Usually on wood background and acrylics, these productions are worth the stated prices, which can range from fifteen-hundred to several grand. We are talking real art here, not decor wall junk. The place is gritty; it has the dusty imperfection of a art studio and carpenter shop. Yet a walk -through is comfortable. The caverns like passage dip and curve around allowing a nice view of studios and art for sale. The cool dampness is usually a reprieve for me, especially in hot 90-plus degree weather, but it also gives the spaces a connection with the underground. The smells of sawdust, paint, glue, and dyes lace the air. Among those scents floats strands of the 'Artist Little Helper,' so strong that one could get a delightful contact buzz. I think they have open gallery days on the second Friday of the month. I suggest the interested to check it out. The area of Franklton it sits is very beautiful In that rusty kind of way; with several defunct factories in the area in old red brick buildings, the rallway running through, with mature trees lining the street it certainly should be the new arts district. read more

Awesome space to come check out local artists! Each room has a different artist inside. My friend and I went on a Friday it was open to the public, we had a wonderful time. You can purchase artwork, stickers, etc. And a lot of the artists had snacks and drinks. I stopped in for the final winter's farmer market. There were pies, cookies, breads, seafood, and chocolate. It was a small selection of vendors and no food truck. All of this was said to be unusual by the vendors who where there. Someone was manning an art table which was very popular with the under 8 crowd and was a pleasant way to break up the day. It's cold, fairly dirty, old, and undergoing constant renovations so I doubt it's for everyone, but they are definitely doing good work for the neighborhood, no questioning that. Probably my favorite thing about 400 W Rich is that, due to not serving alcohol, I can party here all night. I don't think I've been to an event where I left earlier than 4am. Now, I've argued before that Columbus doesn't really need any more of these artist spaces, particularly regarding the now-failed project Wonderland. I'd be interested to see some sort of figures on how many artists left Milo to go to Junctionview, or left JV to come to Rich, etc. Maybe the answer isn't many at all, but when was the last time you heard about something happening at Milo? Things - parties, shows, the same things happening at Rich, used to happen there. I'm still not convinced the city can support all of them. Pecha Kucha was at Junctionview for over a year. Yet the last one was at 400 W Rich. I'm not involved enough in the Columbus art scene to know whether that move was permanent or not, but still...hopefully you see the picture. Regarding the Wonderland project, I used to say "yeah, that's exactly what the Short North needs, more galleries, studios, lofts, and restaurants." I would say "if you're going to start a project like that, at least do it in a neighborhood that actually needs that redevelopment, like Franklinton, King-Lincoln, or Linden." Well, kudos to Chris and crew for doing just that. That said, I am against the development of any new loft spaces. There should be no new construction when there are solid structures waiting to be redeveloped just around the corner, and in this area, there are plenty. Considering 400 W Rich's endeavors so far, I think they will make the right call on that. With some more improvements, both to the building and events, I'd bump this to a four. And before you go writing me compliments that say "hey dude, Wonderland was gonna be in Italian Village, not Short North" let me just clear up that I am intentionally exhibiting a personal bias against neighborhoods that only cover two city blocks. As far as I'm concerned, Italian Village, Harrison West and Victorian Village are all just a part of the Short North. read more

I like this space. I liked it when Independent's Day was here. I like checking out the artists' studios and going to events. It's a little grungy-industrial and that's awesome. We did get kicked out of the upstairs during Independent's Day because it was left unsecure and we didn't know we weren't supposed to be up there (especially since there were still signs inviting us up there); because of that and what I'm going to discuss below, I do feel like their staff could have their shit together just a tiny bit more. The winter farmers' market left me perplexed. I saw very few vendors, very little signage up to direct you to any other vendors that might be there . . . the interior space is a bit maze-like, so who knows if we missed half the market? There were about three vendors that I would really consider "farm" vendors and a handful of arts and crafts vendors, which was a huge letdown. I would have called it an "artists' market" instead of a "farmers' market", though the number of vendors we were able to find didn't really make it much of a market at all. Would totally go to a party here, though I don't know if I'll go to other "farmers'" markets here, unless they're organized better. read more

If any project in the City of Columbus that focuses on community building and the artist community shows momentum and promise, it is 400 W. Rich. It's a great community of people and the space is versatile and friendly. I was there last Saturday for their Winter Market, which was a blast. Going on at the same time was a Grilled Cheese contest in another area of the building, plus, Dinin' Hall was open with food trucks and hospitality. Have you ever been to a farm market with produce, cottage foods, art, and antiques, plus Trapeze lessons, and a childrens' hiphop/ break dancing exhibition!? Oh? You haven't? Well then you haven't been to 400 W. Rich. Things are happening here and it is AWESOME! read more

We visited 400 West Rich as part of the Franklinton Fridays event. The lack of signage and cohesion of the event made it confusing, but artists were happy to tell us how to navigate the building and the other venues we should check out that evening. The building is an older warehouse with divided spaces for artists. While only about half of the artists were displaying their work, it was a great opportunity to meet and greet and see what Franklinton has to offer. I look forward to the event growing and for the guest experience/publicity to improve. read more

Where do you go to find music, arts and fresh food in Columbus? 400 West Rich! I first visited for their farmer's market, but have since gone back time and time again for various events. This old factory is ripe with creativity. Its the place to meet and mingle with artists, farmers, performers, entrepreneurs and culture enthusiasts. The Columbus community is lucky to have them! You can participate in aerial classes held here (yep), peruse the local art in the hundreds of studios, or grab a beer with friends at the brewery. I know! isn't it awesome? What a great little development and an interesting group of tenants. It was just what we were looking for to compliment our downtown apartment living. An interesting place to work and have our tools/equipment, at a reasonable price. Also lots going on all the time, so you have a sense of being part of something new and exciting. This really is a cool and unique space. They have everything from farmer's markets, to live music festivals, to food truck gatherings in addition to the Dinin' Hall that happens here. My band has played some parties here, festivals, etc, and it seems like every time I come we find a new and interesting part of the building or outdoor space that we never knew about. I can't help but think that somehow the city is going to take a look at this place and deem it unsafe or whatever they do and shut it down. I hope this doesn't happen. read more

Hipster Heaven is what i thought when I walked around this place. I liked the feel of the place even though it was a pretty empty winter day here. I like the idea and if I was crafty or more into these homemade projects then i might like it even more. It is a wonderful place to walk around and explore. I do want to go back in the summer when more of the shops are open. Come walk around and then grab some food from a food truck outside. My favorite thing about this place is the freedom to just wander around without worry of being yelled at. Cool place with a laid back feel. The establishment is kid friendly and welcoming to everyone. You can park across Rich St. in the Dodge Park parking lot for free. The exhibits are typically free as well. Great space, versatile and interesting. I've been to several events here, including Pecha Kucha, a haunted house, and a concert. Really great to have this venue available for such events. However, I did accidentally get locked in the wrong part of the building at PK and have to break the door down. Oh well, that's part of the adventure of exploring 400 W Rich. And this place is getting constant improvements! Now it has walls from Urban Scrawl installed inside! Awesome! read more

Cool place. I was here for a Columbus Soup event (awesome concept, check it out: http://www.columbussoup.org/) and it worked perfectly. Exposed brick, concrete floors and high ceilings with lots of natural lighting make it a great "whitespace" for any event that you're looking to host. read more

I admit that at times it isn't so much to look at, but you have to consider this is a working studio that is constantly in use for local artists, events, and even the new Dinin' Hall food truck pod. I volunteered here years ago when it was a warehouse and got to tour it a few years ago as they were renovating it into artist studios, before Strongwater was put in. What a neat place for creatives to gather and make a name for Columbus. We all benefit from that. And how awesome is it that there is a trapeze school inside of it? Recently bought some art over the weekend here while enjoying Independent's Fest. Truly unique and a great view of the Cbus skyline!
