Think about it for a second. What's the first thing you buy when you go to Korean grocery stores? ICE CREAM POPSICLES. I'll just leave it at that. Let's put my 15 year-old wang jokes aside (okay, I'm still gonna make a few more so be prepared) So I passed by this place on my way home from work a few days ago. It was a hella hot day, and I just came from commuting, so I thought "Why not get some Melona?" So yeah, I ended up getting Melona, which tasted great as usual. However, I decided to look around the place for a little while so I could stare at signs I didn't understand. So they literally have Korean everything. And by everything, I mean seriously goddamn everything. Korean liquor, Korean coffee, Korean noodles, Korean chips, Korean ketchup, Korean cold cuts... basically, it's like they ripped a grocery straight from Korea and brought it here. The only things missing were terrifyingly white Korean pop stars and I would've thought I was in Korea. Seriously, if you're thinking of cooking anything Korean or with Korean flavors, I promise that the assortment of stuff here will be more than enough. If you need some delicious Korean satisfaction, Wang Mart is definitely the place for you. Get ready for a whirlwind of delicious Korean flavor in your mouth!

The high ceilings and large space ensure that this grocery carries almost all the basic Korean goods you need. From fresh kimchi, frozen meat cut, spices, ice cream, junk food and other assorted groceries, Wang Mart is one of my favorite Korean groceries in the metro. Their main store is in Valero Street, but they have opened a smaller branch along Bautista Street. Both stores are within Salcedo Village. Kang's has a wide selection of Korean food and other products. Whenever I crave for kimchi or gochujang, their Valero shop has become my go-to place. Apart from Korean products and goodies, Kang's also sells fresh fruits, vegetables, and meat products. In fact, I'd also pop up in their store during emergencies when my own pantry has ran out of garlic, tomato, onions and other essential cooking ingredients. I choose this grocery even if there are so many 24-hour convenience stores and a Rustan's Supermarket in the vicinity. The reason: Kang's has that unsophisticated atmosphere expected in a neighborhood store. You can even chat with the friendly owners if they happen to be present. The staff are usually nice but sometimes can't be bothered to help out. They also sell some fresh produce, bottled drinks, noodle cups, and many other curious things worth experimenting and trying out. Usually I would just stick to one or two Korean ice cream treats but more often than not, I am with enabler friends who also like to buy different things. I received several Filipino treats that they picked up from a grocery store in their area. Here are two that I particularly enjoyed: Polvoron - Shortbread cookies that are so irresistible and addicting. A powdery, buttery, crumbly dessert that just melts in your mouth (literally). It is decently sweet, but not overpowering at all. Not the healthiest, but a pretty low calorie cookie compared to many others. Goes well with a warm cup of coffee or tea. Dried Green Mangoes - Sliced and dehydrated fruit snacks. Visually, it's not very appetizing and tends to look discolored. But taste is a more important factor of course. I found it very flavorful and sweet, with a slight hint of tartness. The texture is chewy and fibrous. Some can be tough to bite through, I would cut them into smaller pieces. Also not that healthy, but I'd argue it's better than binging on chips. A great source of Vitamin C! Both are very enjoyable, in moderation of course. You can find dried mangoes (zero sugar added options available as well) and polvoron cookies at most supermarkets and online retailers, no plane ticket required!

Haha It's stuck in my head. ;-p This was our everyday convenience store next to our condo especially when we don't have anything to eat. The best part was instead of the usual American fast food, they had fast food Filipino food and beers. Customer service was good and the store is clean. They even have a place on the side with tables to hang out and eat. They have full blast AC on anyway. 'Everyday 7-11 for sure!' =}

And you aren't sure if you should pinch yourself to wake up because it's so unsettling (don't bother pitching other customers, that makes the nightmare worse), or just forget about real life and just live in the Matrix because it's so much better. On one side, it's like a dream you don't want to wake up from. They serve hot fried chicken, which goes crazy good with rice, which they also offer. And they got a steamer full of dim sum and Chinese steamed buns with mystery meat gussied up into really mesmerizing flavors. You got high end alcohol you can buy aplenty to wash down the low end grub. It's like a fusion of east meets west in the most unexpected way. It's a bizarre cultural mashup of awesomeness. Sort of like hearing Taylor Swift rap. You never thought it would work, and question your mental state for liking it more than you should. On the other hand, you take one bite of the hot dog, and you swear that someone replaced the meat tube with bicycle tire rubber, fancifully colored red to trick your senses. Nowhere in sight is the Big Gulp or a Slurpee because the Filipinos have more culturally sensitive ways ways to induce diabetes. Like Lechon. And red tea. Again artificially colored because there's probably something to hide. And the most unsettlingly thing of all: no fresh coffee. Not that I'm saying 7-11 is known as a bastion of the dark brew, but it's never corrupted my palate so I count that as a plus. The only solution is to steal a bunch of stuff you love, and as the cashier tries to tackle you over the counter, slap yourself a few times, so that when you wake up from your dreams, you just might be lucky enough to have crossed into the real world with some Fat Fingers cakes, Nockers candy bars, and pants stuffed with fried chicken. Being authentic Korean noodles, all packaging is in that language so ask one of the attendants if you want to be sure about what you're buying. Be warned, the spicy one are really spicy. Korean ice cream carries flavors that are quite different from those made here, and Sonamoo has a lot of types available. If you're not already a fan, the fish-shaped one will make you a believer (and, no, it doesn't taste of fish). In addition, Sonamoo also carries many brands of dried seaweed (don't knock it till you try it), and some exotic canned stuff like silkworm pupae (don't try it; I did and wish I didn't indulge my curiosity).
