I enjoyed seeing the layout of the spaces and the friendliness of each staff member, and I truly enjoyed the Latin music playing as we met. I was especially impressed with how volunteers and donations run this whole station!!! I highly suggest learning about your local college radio station. It's a genuinely enlightening and memorable experience.

That's a quote from a WCSB DJ during a midday shift. WCSB is somewhat like a guide to me when I make my annual visits to Cleveland each summer. It's something that my radio dial never wavers from in the car, except, maybe, when the high school kids take over and play Adam Levine, or the Indian trance music just becomes too much. But most of the time, the music on WCSB is a beautiful, eclectic but unknown mix of older and contemporary music, flanked by awkward PSAs and often college-aged DJ banter. More often than not, they're playing a gritty variety of obscure 60's/70's music, punk or garage rock that could not suit my drives through the city better. Anything from The Cramps to the original Spanish version of "Be My Baby." Something to compliment the rows of idle brick factories, abandoned apartment complexes, potholed streets, and forlorn, shirtless old men wandering the streets. I cherish these drives through Cleveland's gritty neighborhoods, and being able to stream this station while elsewhere only helps to remind me of what I really like about the city and why I continue to come back.

WRUW FM 91.1 Cleveland embodies the spirit of college radio. The station always has an incredibly…read morediverse lineup, from your typical college student indie-rock shows to public affairs shows to (supposedly) the longest running jazz show in the country (Down By The Cuyahoga on Friday nights). The station is operated out of Case Western Reserve University, so the DJs are split between community members and CWRU students. Not every show will be your favorite genera or expertly produced, but the vast diversity of shows pretty much guarantees you'll be able to find a few shows you love. The DJs here are all volunteers, so each show is on the air because the DJ really wants to be doing it. For listeners, this means the DJs have immense knowledge of and passion for their genre. WRUW may lack some of the polish of a commercial radio station, but the incredible diversity of programming and unbridled passion of the DJs at this radio station more than makes up for that at this Cleveland gem. Full disclosure: I've been a student DJ here for the last 4 years.

It was something iconic that went from playing classic rock and then to alternative to gain an appeal to the more younger rockers while other rock stations that play classic rock gets mostly an appeal from older rockers to distinguish itself from those other rock stations, and also playing a combo of classic and modern heavy metal, then later on playing a mix of all three different types of rock combined, thus making it have the largest playlist plus the best and largest variety of rock in comparison to other rock stations. I know that Howard Stern is the one who made that station, but honestly by this point, I could and would still listen to this station amongst most others and can make due with it even without having stern there. We're really basically there mainly for the music. And I know that there's a fully automated version of this station online, so why can't we even have it this way on local radio, if not, have it be controlled by a set of staff including DJs with their own shows or something. And why can't we also even have an automated version of those other deceased or rather defunct stations and formats online as we do with this one? And I'm also pretty sure there are other iconic radio talk show hosts that can and have made just as much of a staple as stern always had and especially one who would be ideal for a rock station. Like Eddie Trunk from the New York classic rock station like Q104.3 who always has his late night radio show there late every Friday night which can either be simulcasted here during the same night of the week and hour, or he can also have at any other time and/or day of the week if anything. Something can and should be worked out to have this awesome station be brought back for good.
