We decided that this week we would explore the Deschutes Historical Museum as part of our weekly…read moreexploration adventure. We were not disappointed! Parking was easy. There is a parking lot at the museum, plus there is street parking. The museum is contained in a 100+ year old schoolhouse. The small gift shop has several books that we want to add to our collection thereby ensuring that we will return multiple times. We spent about an hour and a half studying the exhibits and did not see everything. For me the most interesting part was the railroad contribution to the logging industry. Next time I want to spend more time in the bicycle exhibit. Before we left, we had an interesting conversation with the friendly and helpful museum staff. This is a great place to learn about early Bend history.

Scalehouse, perhaps the only non-profit contemporary art gallery in Bend, is located in the large…read moreFranklin Crossing building on the corner of Franklin and Bond. The gallery can be accessed either from the interior of the building or from Tin Pan Alley. - Rotating contemporary art on display in a moderately-sized gallery space. Depending on the particular exhibit, you'll find photography, drawing, painting, mixed-media and sculpture by individual artists and group shows. - Features both upcoming and established artists such as Bend residents Nancy Floyd (2022 Guggenheim Fellow), Paula Bullwinkle, Bill Hoppe and Christian Brown, as well as regional artists such as April Bey and Sadie Barnette. - As with many contemporary art galleries, some of the work revolves around current societal issues. The recent COBIPOC exhibit, "Be Nice (White) ... You're in Bend," examined the notion that Central Oregon lacked racial diversity and sought to increase the visibility of the BIPOC community. Another recent show, "Crow's Shadow Institute of the Arts," featured work from the Umatilla tribes in Eastern Oregon. - Scalehouse was founded in part by local art legend Patricia Clark who did much to promote art and artists in Central Oregon. The gallery has an adjoining artist workshop dedicated to Pat. There were about 7-8 other people there but plenty of space for everyone to be spread out and everything was so clean, I never felt uncomfortable. If it were not for The Haven I would have been way less comfortable visiting Bend as often as I did. The Haven offers several comfortable ad hoc working stations. I'm a lounge back with my feet up kind of laptop worker and there were a couple of spots that were able to fully serve my needs. For me, when it comes to shared workspaces the most important thing is a private setting for an online meeting. To my count the Haven has about 12-13 spots where you can go to carry out private meetings. These spots include 5 phone booths, 3 small conference rooms, 1 large conference room, and about 3-4 isolated open areas. They are also adding more all the time so by the time you're reading this review this number might have increased. Management is awesome. The owner Scott is a really good guy and truly cares about the welfare of the members. The wife, whom I didnt really interact with much, is also a good person and she is a local elected education official. Honestly, everyone on staff is awesome and helpful. Shout out to Heather and Cynthia. Whenever I went I always felt very welcomed. Finally, a shared workspace is ran by staff however the members are what really make up the environment. The Haven as a great diverse group of members who have a wide range of jobs. Every now and then I would to see what other members were doing on their monitors and I saw some pretty intriguing stuff.

Restaurant review:…read more About as old-school as they get in these parts, the Bend Golf Club restaurant/lounge is open to the public. No membership required. Ambiance is true to the genre: open area with numerous cloth-covered four tops as well as a few larger tables. Naugahyde (I think) lounge chair seating. Golf playing on the several TVs scattered about. No loud music. It's definitely casual. There's a small bar seating maybe six. About those chairs - they're horrible. If you have even a slightly cranky back, you'll hate them. I certainly do. - Service is good, efficient. Not top tier but certainly nothing to grumble about. Your order is taken quickly, drinks arrive soon and the food not too much later. We've had to wait for our our server to notice we needed drink refills a couple of times. - I mentioned the bar, which despite my being a dedicated bar-rat I don't think I'd want to sit at. They have only several beers on draft, well below Bend standards. If you're looking for booze or wine, they have it. - The menu is old school American with a few outliers. Salmon fish & chips, for example, are pretty good (they also have the more standard cod F&C). Several salads - I tried the SW steak salad, which despite having a nice cut of beef was not remarkable. Ribs, burgers, wings, pasta, shrimp, pork chops, etc, are all available. They do have the Impossible Burger, if you're into that. - And they have specials. That SW steak salad was one, but there's also prime rib night (Saturday, I believe) and a four-course dinner on Thursday for $25. - Prices for the food are maybe a tad high but not outrageous by any means. Before you tip, check for added gratuity on your bill. Drink prices are in line with what you expect in Bend. Hours change with the season, I'm told (by a member). During winter, it's open Thursday - Sunday. Otherwise (i.e., when the golf course is operating) it's open every day except Monday. The website doesn't reflect that. Bottom line? It's OK and if you're a member, it's certainly a good option for you. As a destination? Not so much. Unless you like to watch golf while you drink & dine.

We got a seat on the bleachers on the left side of the field and had a pretty good view of the game. The bathrooms here were cleaner than I expected which is a plus. The food was pretty good too. To drink I got a Sierra Mist because they were out of Dr. Pepper, boo. I liked my hotdog with sauerkraut, although they put a lot of sauerkraut on there. We also got a pretzel with cheese, garlic fries, cracker jacks and cotton candy. The pretzel had way too much salt on it and the cheese sauce was kinda flat. Happy I didn't order that, it was my Brother's. The garlic fries were good. There was a ton of strong garlic on it. A little too strong for me so I kinda ate around most of the garlic. The cotton candy was yummy. The game was fun. The Elks won 4-3 in extra innings. It was a good game.
