I never made it past the front desk. A welcoming and knowledgeable man made eye contact with me and asked if he could help me find anything. I said yes. He proved several copies of Lord of The Flies for me to choose from that we in the shelf behind him at the register. The copy I choose was gently used and had an updated cover. I hope to get back before I move away because I'm sure I saw many levels of book stacks and a few places to sit and read. I would've on my first visit but, I was on a mission for that book and my schedule was limited so I am truly glad that friendly man helped me right away. read more

I was greeted promptly on arrival. They explained where things were in the store but then just let me go on my own way. They are a large used bookstore that had a good selection. They didnt have what I was looking for but it was good experience I would come back This would not be my go to book store for newer books I believe there are other stores in the area that have a bigger selection of newer books but there general selection is large read more

Anyone who's read my reviews knows that I'm generally loath to shop in brick and mortar shops and prefer to spend my money online. I'll make an exception for bookstores, and I'll definitely make time for A Book Barn. Located in Old Town Clovis, A Book Barn has a lovely selection of "new-ish" and used books, both hardbacks and paperbacks. Unlike other used bookstores, they carry more than mystery/thrillers and romance novels. They in particular have a good selection of used and vintage children's literature. The owners are great. Not only do they know their stuff when it comes to books, they're both avid readers, and they've gone out of their way to get some out-of-print children's titles for me. Best of all, they don't mind kids pawing through their inventory and asking them lots of questions. I don't say this about many shops around here, but if you love books, A Book Barn is certainly worth a trip across town to visit! read more

One of the better bookstores I've visted in Fresno. Fantastic classics section. Fiction section is worth a look. The workers there are very knowledgeable. My wife also found Babysitter Club books for 75 cents. Which helps her get that much closer to collecting the whole set. read more

Nothing compares to a local book store. Chains have nothing on them. I fell in love with The Book Barn the first time we visited a couple of years ago and have tried to pop in when I think of it (not as often as I'd like only because I've been going to the library a lot lately ;)) However, I specifically went there recently for an author I wanted to try and I had a feeling I would rather own his books anyway. The man who greeted us was super nice and not only helped me find one book on the shelf but I could tell he had it in his mind that he'd seen another somewhere in the store. While I joined my kids in the children's section he came over to me a while later with a second book by the author. I was thrilled... Really. This kind of service doesn't often happen anymore and it reminded me of my days of working in a small bookstore and how much I enjoyed it. It's the little things like this that Moshe a huge difference in a local small business versus a huge chain store that doesn't care to help you. During check out, the gentleman also checked their inventory and verified that they did indeed have a third in their warehouse and they could get it for me per request when I'm ready. Of course I'll keep going back. They have an awesome children's selection too . some really great classic old books I remember from childhood as well as very old, valuable books. And my absolute favorite, a case of various Wizard of Oz books to drool over :) read more

We stumbled upon this gem while in town for Christmas and hung out for hours! Reminiscent of Powell's Books in Portland. the BEST used book store EVER!!! today i bought a 1944 edition collector's book of Lewis Carroll's Through The Looking Glass for only $30. It is worth WAYY more than that. they have so many books like that. they have great books for children, classics, romance, games, sci fi, everything. i would give this place ten stars if i could read more

You can't find a true bookstore these daos at least I thought... Until I found My favorite book store in the Central Valley! Several years ago I discovered A Book Barn. My jaw dropped at the number of classic hard cover books. My favorite, Nathaniel Hawthorne has his own section. This store is huge and covered with books. No gift shop, or coffee bar just books. New & used. If you want to disconnect and actually read, this is the place. Also, the second story is a great place to hide & read for hours. Enjoy! read more

Don't underestimate these old and used books. There are many books here that are in very good quality. Most of the regular fiction/non-fiction books cost around $3-$6. Hard covers go a few dollars higher. But special hard covered books (not sure what the names are for these) go up to $30-$80. They also have a non-fiction section that covers many subjects such as history, art, education, cookbooks, gov't, religion, etc. Mangas. Yes they have mangas and quite a few surprisingly. But don't expect much of the more recent or mainstream Mangas. These are your typical 90's and early 2000's mangas like Inuyasha. Many volumes are missing as well due to buyers buying certain volumes seperately. These books come to about $3-$5 each volume. This could be good for those manga collectors if they are missing a volume or two from their late favorite manga. There aren't any Japanese light novels and I didn't see any comics. They do have a healthy amount of children books as well. I see many families bring their children and they go straight to that section to find books. There are a ton of Dr. Suess books. They have a small collection of audio books/DVDs/VCR as well if interested. Antique books! These were really cool. Books as old as the 1900's and 1800's. They have this section in a corner strictly for employees to handle these ancient books. Really cool. A section solely dedicated of SIGNED books is really cool as well. You might find a book signed by your favorite author. I already checked if Stephen King or J.K. Rowling was in here but there are none lol. The infrastructure of the building also really does feel like your in a barn in a good way and it has a very cozy quiet like feeling. Many chairs are laid out in sections of the library so you can literally sit and look at the shelves of books. This could be a problem however because people like me tend to keep bumping against these chairs which hurt. There is a reading section on the second floor. Many shelves are also labeled specific genres so it is very easy to find the section you are looking for whether it be Western Fiction to Civil War History. You can also trade your books as well. Although I haven't done this before, it is an extra option you can do if you have unused books at your disposal. Just don't expect much back from those books (which is fine). Staff is super friendly and helpful. I'm not sure if they allow you to use restrooms though. I didn't see any. I know I needed to go after staying there for 2 hours reading books. Luckily I found my book and headed out. The only reason I took a star off is because of lack of new inventory. If you were searching for something in the economics section and couldn't find anything you needed, you probably wont be seeing any new stock from that section anytime soon. Many sections can be quickly depleted. But this is understandable since all these books are used. The chances of a person trading in economic books is quite rare so it will take a very long time for you to wait to come back to see if they have anything new. Another negative reason is although the employees are very friendly and helpful, they do a lot of gossip about customers whether it be positive or negative. This bookstore is quiet, so you can really hear what they are saying which can annoy you if you are trying to read an abstract of a book. Other then that, it is a solid used bookstore with almost everything you need. Highly recommending to check it out at least once. read more

I've been coming to the Book Barn for many years now. I really still enjoyed hunting for a good book if it be a biography or music, True Crime or cooking any topic I can sure find a good book here. This places is very peaceful I can spend hours. The staff is always welcoming and ready to look up a book for me. They will even take me to the aisle where I can find it. There is one gentleman that works there regularly he is not the owner. Anyways, don't catch him on his bad day because he can be a little condescending. Any day that I'm able to head to the bookstore is a good day so I don't worry about it and go about my business. Four stars because their inventory of older cook books has depleted and searching for a book online is not so user-friendly anymore. read more

Giving off a vibe that is more bohemian than kitschy Old Town Clovis, A Book Barn is a great place to get lost on a lazy afternoon. Very good selection, immensely helpful service, and a fine selection of antique-type materials, prints, rare books, and Americana. The space is large and cavernous, but not intimidating. The only thing missing from this place (that looks like a kind of place that Hemingway may have haunted) is a bar that serves Viennese-style coffee and whiskey on the rocks with some deep weather-worn leather couches. Meticulously organized, excellent selection. This bookstore has moved from their original location and can now be found right in Old Town. Interesting selection of local interest and many, many "vintage" books. There are bean bags and chairs that invite you to stay a while... A must for any book worm, and definitely worth the drive! read more

This is a great book store in old town Clovis. The owners are very knowledgeable and friendly and always eager to help you find anything you might be looking for. They have a huge selection of books but everything is well organized and well laid out. It doesn't feel cluttered inside like some used bookstores can. There are also plenty of little eclectically furnished reading areas throughout the store where one can sit and relax while reading. The selection here is excellent - my friend found a copy of an old novel that he had been searching for years for. Especially enjoyed the cookbook section and the history sections. This is the kind of place you wish you had more time to spend in - I know we did. Highly recommended! read more

I went in specifically for children's books - board books to be exact. i have a toddler who loves his bedtime stories. Anyway, I was greeted immediately & offered help by two friendly staff members. I was in the shop for a good 20-30 minutes, looking over every nook and cranny for books my son would enjoy. While I was impressed by the size of the children's section in general (for being a used bookstore that is), i was kind of disappointed. Many of the board books i saw weren't that desirable - for example, i saw one or two that came free from kid's meals (Wendy's to be exact) & from the hospital i think when you have a baby. I only know this because i received the same book when i gave birth to my son a year and a half ago (i believe the package is donated from First 5 of California to be even more specific). While i didn't expect the latest titles, i did expect the board books to be a smidge better (read: from this decade). Although to be fair, the prices were really good - from $1.50 to $4.99. Something I didn't like was overhearing one staff tell another how he didn't like the way she handled herself on the phone with a customer. he went on for a bit, and she didn't really say much; this irked my last nerve. It's one of pet peeves as a customer when i hear things like that. It's inappropriate - as a customer i don't want to hear that -save it for a different time or another room. I wasnt the only the only customer in the area either. Overall, I probably won't make a huge effort to come back unless i'm already in the area like today. The bookstore itself is impressive in the amount of books it contains overall, but not really up to par when it comes to toddler age books. read more

This is a place where you can find any type of book old or new. There is a table there to sit and read. The staff is very knowledgeable. In fairness I should mention that I have never been to this store in person, but after calling and speaking with their customer service representative on the phone, I now have no intention of ever going here! I'd heard that The Book Barn buys used books, and I had about 20 nice vintage ones that I was wondering if they'd be interested in. The lady I spoke with was initially polite at the beginning of the call, but her attitude quickly changed to curt and irritable upon discovering that I was calling to sell, not to buy. She informed me that the books had to meet the stores requirements (which I had expected) and then began a long list of questions about the condition of each book. She interrupted me repeatedly as I tried to answer her questions, and we had only discussed about 7 of the 20 books when she abruptly put me on hold. When she came back she bluntly informed me that they were not interested in any of my books (we had covered less than half of them so she didn't even know what many of the books were) and hung up on me! That kind of rude behavior is completely unnecessary. I'm not to blame for the stores used book requirements, and if the customer service representative dislikes having to ask questions about the condition of books then perhaps she shouldn't be working at a book store. Furthermore if she wasn't interested in listening to what books I had to offer then a simple "no" at the beginning of the call would have sufficed, and saved me 15 minutes of abuse and wasted time. I'm very disappointed. If they are as rude in person as they are over the phone its is a wonder they stay in business. read more
