After traveling all night and most of the next day (thanks to the five hour jump forward in time), we stopped here because hamburgers are a comfort food and we were, quite honestly, too tired to venture into anything that would've been a culinary gamble. Yes, I had a cheeseburger for dinner in Lisbon. But after four days of food tour, shrimp and garlic, bacalhau and pastel de nata, it was time for something basic. It doesn't get much simpler than grilled meat and melty cheese on a toasted bun. A bit upscale for casual dining, A Cultura do Hambúrguer is in the narrow streets of Bairro Alto. The narrow storefront belies a deep restaurant with a kitchen in the back. There is a bar with stools and a bunch of tables. My waiter brought the English menu and it was easy to choose the classic Salgadeiras burger. Manchego cheese, bacon, caramelized onions and sliced tomato on a seeded bun. Served with a nice sized pot of fries with mayo. It was exactly the break from Portuguese food I wanted. The restaurant is quite chill and played all sorts of classic rock and roll music. My waiter was attentive but not too much so. And I was able to guess the wifi password - hamburguer - as there wasn't much for cellular coverage deep in the restaurant. Stopped in and sat at the bar for a drink. Ambience looked inviting. Bartender must have been new and didn't know how to make a margarita or a whiskey sour and had to ask for help. First Impressions: well lit, love the decor. Very instagrammable The Noms: Burgers were good. A bit pricey though. The Salgadieras burger was good. Basically a regular burger with bacon. Meat was juicy and bacon was crunchy. The spicy chorizo burger was a little undercooked. I like a burger to be medium well. It was a bit too pink in the middle. The fried egg that came with it was over cooked. No runny yolk as the yellow was fully cooked and hard. There's no point to topping anything with a fried egg unless the yolk is runny. That's important. Be clear with how you want the meat cooked and how you want the eggs to be runny. Berry lemonade was a tad too sweet but I knew that coming into the order. The lime lemonade was better bc we had the option to order it with "less sugar." The homemade key lime pie was the perfect ending. We ordered it to go as a last minute edition. I practically ate the whole thing before I remembered to take a pic (see photo)... it was just THAT good. Order it! In Conclusion: I'd recommend eating here if you're craving a burger. Definitely order a slice of key lime pie. One of the waiters, I forget his name but he's Brazilian with tattoos on the back of his head... he's super dope. We came in at the last 40 mins before closing and with 5 mins left to order but never once did he make us feel rushed or acted rude. We really did not enjoy our meal here. The cheese plate was really bad, the potatoes skins were average (over fried) as was the burger. Our food was so underwhelming (and in the case of the cheese, bad) that we couldn't finish our food. I would avoid this place in the future myself. Ten of us visiting from the United States had dinner here tonight. The place was crowded and we didn't have a reservation . We sat at the bar. The ladies had a pitcher of red sangria. It was delicious. Eight out of ten of us had steak sandwiches, a recommendation from one of the bartenders . The food was amazing. Service was excellent, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching the cocktails being made. The bar is clean and bright. An excellent spot for a cocktail prior to dinner or on your way home. I stumbled upon this place on a Tuesday afternoon. I was the only guest there. It's a good sized restaurant that seats a maximum of 40 guests, so I can see how this place can get crowded in the evenings and weekends. The service here was alright. Not exceptional but not bad either. I guess that's Portugal for you. I ordered the Salgadeiras burger (€7.30) medium rare and added a fried egg (€0.60) and substituted the hamburger bun for the garlic Madeiras bread (€0.60). All burgers come with fries. Dollar for dollar, this had to have been the best burger I ever had. The burger was cooked to a perfect medium rare, and while, this was messy to eat, the machego cheese, carmelized onions, bacon, egg, garlic Madeira bread, and tomato came together so perfectly, I didn't care that burger juice was running down my hand. The meat was tender, the bread was soft, and I think I actuallu heard a choir of angels sing at every bite of this. The fries were soggy and oily, so don't come here for that. But that burger....*drool* If you're looking for a bomb ass burger outside the United States, I invite you to feast your mouth on this. I'm a little embarrassed that I had a hamburger in Lisbon, but I was sooo tired of cod. This was a great hamburger. Seriously, this place could compete anywhere in the US. Not surprisingly, a lot of American tourists here. Although this is yet another small restaurant in Chiado, this was easily one of the best run restaurants I saw in Portugal. The process to wait was clear (sign up on a clipboard near the door and wait outside). Line jumping didn't exist. At the recommendation of someone from the hostel, we went here fairly late for a bite to eat and they were cleaning up but told us they were still open and to come in. Apparently it's pretty popular, obviously known for their hamburgers, so that's what we ordered. I got My Mother's Burger, which was served on a slate instead of a plate, and came with fries and a side of mayo. The burger had Azeitão cheese (a Portuguese, sheep's milk cheese), confit onions, eggplant sauce, sliced tomatoes, lettuce, and garlic mayo on olive and garlic Madeira bread. The burger patty itself was cooked just the way I like it, on the mid-rare side. The eggplant "sauce" was more like a spread, which was tasty, but overpowered by the onions and mayo. Personally, I found the bun a little too much bread for the size of the patty, but it was a pretty good burger as a whole, just salty, heavy, and really, really rich that I actually didn't want to finish it. The fries seemed a little undercooked, but I had to keep eating them to try and counteract some of the saltiness and richness of the burger. We had to ask for water and got next to no refills, so we were totally parched and I just didn't feel that great by the end. Not sure if it was because it was going to close soon, but we didn't get the best service and the food seemed like a little bit of a miss for me.
