Meat Like It Used to Be is a great neighbourhood butcher, filled with knowledgable staff and great…read morequality meat. They have award-winning sausages made on site, and also cure their own bacon, and make up their own beef burgers. There's a variety of stuffed or marinated meat, good for the bbq in the summer or for roasting in the winter. They make sausage rolls and pasties, and it's pretty hard to resist when you walk by and smell that baking! They were happy to give me bones for a dog for no charge. Anything you want, they'll get in for you. There's a small selection of produce and chutneys, and some meat bagged up for the freezer. Oh, and there's cheese and ham, too. I may just start sleeping on the floor. And if you go in and say what you're making, they'll give you the right cut of meat and the right size, and then tell you how long to cook it. I think one of these days, they'll just follow me home and cook it up for me. The downside? It's expensive. But you're paying for quality and expertise, which you just don't get at a supermarket. They're open seven days a week, too.

I went in last night and there was one person already being served - the butcher had tenderised a piece of beef to order and was in the process of cutting it into strips for her. But that didn't mean I had to wait, as he called his colleague out from the back who was happy to assist. I was very pleased with both the service and the quality of the steaks I purchased. I'm a semi-regular here, although I tend to shop here more in the summer when buying for barbecues etc as they have a good range. They also make their own sausages - the pinner porker is great, and they even make pies, pasties and scotch eggs.

Friendly as always, hope they are around for a long time yet! Opening hours can be a bit of a pain, but that's a small price to pay! Roll on summer.

Not a fan of the co-op down the road this is the best place to get produce, eggs, meat and just about most things you can think of to fill your fridge and cupboard. My husband was able to find whole oats here (called Jumbo Oats) which he couldn't find in any of the major grocery stores. The meat prices are extremely good especially for being so fresh and local, and the frozen meats are a super bargain! We bought some just-picked seasonal strawberries yesterday and they were amazingly delicious. We still need to get some things at a bigger store like some familiar national/international brands or particular varieties of groceries, but Radmore Farm Shop is definitely our new place to walk for fruit, veg, and meat. It's perfect for those "What are we going to have for dinner" afternoons because I can grab meat, onions, mushrooms, and whatever veg suits and cook something up fast. We are definite fans and plan to shop here routinely while we're in town.

The butchers are very friendly, know their stuff and seem to like questions and recommendation requests. These chaps do trade/industry customers, but the store front is based on the busy walk up business by regular customers like you and me. You get a far shorter supply chain without the mass processing centres (and what can go along with that), and the meat sold here is handpicked by an expert butcher and cut in-store which delivers superior quality meat. They have a large selection of meats, and not all of it is on display, so ask if you don't see it. As you can imagine, cutting out several 'middle-men' also means all those saved margins are passed onto you. They also do sell small portions, if you want a skirt of beef, or two t-bone steaks, a single medium chicken, etc. But I've always bought in bulk (2-5kg), then divided it into single meal portions and then into the freezer, and suggest this for maximum savings and minimal trips to Smithfield Butchers. For example, large, good quality skinless, boneless chicken breasts here cost about the same as the basic brands of big name grocers which are small, pumped full of water and inferior quality. The 'steak meats' (e.g. rib eye, fillets, sirloin) are about half the price of big name grocers, and since you're buying a 1-4kg slab, you can cut your steak as thick as you want! Some of the best steaks I've had came from Smithfield Butchers, and the best Christmas Turkey ever! If you can make it to Smithfield Meat Market, this one is a no-brainer.

I would give actually give Church's Butchers a minus score if I could. I don't write this lightly…read moreas this butchers came highly recommended & cleaely has a strong fan base but I am still reeling over an incident on Christmas Eve. 1. When I collected a pre-ordered turkey it was below the weight ordered. I was told I was making a fuss over the weight of a chicken breast which despite snorts 9f objection from the male customers in the store that is actually a significant difference as would feed another person. 2) I was challenging the fact that I wasn't receiving what we ordered & was met with pretty much a shrug of the shoulders & that's just what the farm sent. Well that is for the butcher to take up with the farm. I asked for a discount & eventually was offered another leg which I declined as we couldn't use another leg & requested a breast instead which was declined. I was not rude just factual in my challenge & standing my ground that I'd not received what I'd ordered and it was too late on Christmas Eve to make alternative arrangements. During this I was rudely accused by the butcher of being childish & despite waving the receipt in my hand in front if him, accessed twice in succession by one of his staff of only paying the deposit & not having paid the balance. 3. During most of this dispute with the butcher (who I believe is the owner and admittedly was very welcoming and kind when we visited to place our order), the shop filled with a number of very loyal male customers who despite me ignoring them whilst I focused on my conversation with the butcher, ganged up. These were men of various age groups (at least one old enough to be my father & one of the most vocal) who should have known better, than to bully & intimidate a woman on her own. At no point did the butcher call them out on this behaviour on his premises freely allowing these men to bully me, at least one old enough to be my father. 4. The final straw which unfortunately did get a reaction out of me because it hit a raw nerve is the butcher finally agreed to providing me a chicken breast to make up for the weight difference. One of these male customers again on the premises & without being called out by the butcher, asked me what I was going to do with a chicken breast, 'put it in your bra?'! Unfortunately I did react & swear at the guy whilst informing him that last year I had mascetomy because i had breast cancer. He left the shop backwards looking at me & laughing. Let's hope he never has to go through the experience of cancer himself or with a loved one! He won't find it so funny then. 5. Admittedly completely thrown & deeply upset by this comment, I did snatch the chicken breast when handed to me & left the shop, but at no point in any of this experience did the butcher accept any responsibility, no apology for the under weight nor for allowing his male customers at the time for bullying another of his customers on his premises who was there on her own with no support or back up. The whole experience shook me up quite badly. It sounds dramatic but by the time I was back in my car I was in a right state as I am still mentally processing the breast cancer experience I'm still under treatment for plus despite me in the main ignoring the other customers, in the car it hit me how ganged up & bullied I'd been. Something that I have never experienced before and pretty traumatic to go through as a woman on her own from a group of grown men. Regardless of what anyone thinks about whether I should have challenged the weight difference, the bullying and intimidation was unacceptable & should have been called out by the butcher as on his premises and the dispute was between him & myself, not the other customers but regardless, their behaviour was unacceptable and so was the butcher's in allowing it on his premises to one of his customers despite my dispute with him. I have every right to stand up for what I believe, unoffensively without being subjected to such bullying.
