All Solid Rock services meeting together @ hillsboro stadium 7/12

What qualities are you looking for in a church? Many people have written reviews for this church based on the style of clothes that the pastor wears, how fashionable or how old attenders are, # of people or available parking spots or seats, style of worship music, etc. If you are looking for a church that is filled with people your age, your style, your music, your interests, is not too big or too small, has plenty of parking available right up front, then this is the perfect church for you! Not because this church "fits you" and can serve your needs, but because you can learn how the things that society often defines as the most important, are actually the least important according to God. Solid Rock is a Church that preaches from the Bible. It is not a "Self Help" church that uses the Bible as a reference in the footnotes of a lecture about how to improve your life, find happiness, prosperity, health, etc. They study the Bible like it is the text book in a college course, one paragraph at a time. They worship God with songs, maybe not MY favorite songs, but we are singing them to God, not to me. Solid Rock is intently focused on teaching the Word of God; drawing huge crowds of people is just a byproduct of effectively feeding the hungry souls. In less than 3 years, they went from a dozen people studying the Bible in a dorm room, to several thousand people studying the Bible in a rented warehouse. In the few years following that, they have expanded to 3 locations with multiple services. It makes for a difficult time finding parking or getting seats, but most of us have found a way to overlook the growing pains because we just want to go hear the Word of God being taught and strangely enough, that is hard to find in churches these days.

It feels more like a hospital for the hurting and a place to find your way back to Jesus. The worship was led by the PAW band, and they opened the service beautifully. Pastor Tyler Staton delivered a heartfelt, impactful message, and the service ended with an invitation for anyone who needed prayer or felt led by the Holy Spirit. It was sincere and spirit-filled. They've thought about every detail for comfort and community. There's a cozy mother's/nursing lounge, free coffee, and even a small bookstore. The people are friendly and genuinely welcoming. I also loved that they bless the children before they head to the Sunday School--it's a meaningful touch. You can really sense the Holy Spirit here. Their mission is clear: to be with Jesus, become like Jesus, and do what He did. I would absolutely recommend this church to anyone looking for a loving, Jesus-centered community in Portland.

As much as their branding is inclusive, if you are any amount of queer sympathetic (believing they are God loved) this community will try to convince you those are quiet inside thoughts & sinful ones at that. If you are queer & progressive this is NOT the church for you.

Her talk centered around how loneliness was becoming so prevalent in our society and she came into her talk with all kinds of statistics. Well, she certainly nailed me it's one of the reasons I went to church that day. Instead of getting a message of hope from the Bible I got a lecture from Portland State University that was full of stats. Yep, she hit the nail on the head, I am one of those statistics. I did not even stay for the whole talk. Instead of being uplifted I got reminded of how lonely I was. I felt a bit humiliated as I walked out with tears coming down my face.

An intentionally diverse praise team earnestly trying to get people to worship in the twenty-two minutes of time allotted. A younger pastor with a casual style and cool hair. A name (and logo!) that is deep, meaningful, artistic, and used by similar churches across the country. Mosaic Portland is a casual meeting of believers in in the city's Hollywood district (Northwest). Lots of families. If you're looking for a laid-back church experience, Mosaic would be a good choice. They have lots of programs (they might not call them that, but...) where they get involved in community outreach and service. We visited on a Sunday morning in late summer. We dropped the kids off at the childcare station in the basement, and headed up to the worship center. Nobody really talked to us, but they didn't really ignore us, either. I know church isn't supposed to be about "what's in it for me," but an attractional model of church kind of sets itself up for that. The service was nice- it moved along at a nice pace and kept our attention pretty naturally. The preacher (one of Mosaic's pastors) was approachable and demonstrated that he's a great storyteller. He seems like the kind of guy I'd like to get to know and hang out with. He also seems like the kind of guy I won't ever get to know unless I become a regular at Mosaic. The church seems to be growing- they're looking at buying more space in a building across the street. I just wish they didn't look like hundreds of others churches across the country. Portland is unique- people here are different. It would be nice to see a church like Mosaic that didn't require a conversion to contemporary American Christian culture in order to belong. Worship times: Sundays at 9:30am, 11:15am and (in a bold retro move) 5:30pm. For more information, visit Mosaic Portland's website: http://www.mosaicportland.org After church, head across the street to Laurelwood Pizza Co. It's got a great family atmosphere (play area for kids!) and excellent pizza. http://www.laurelwoodbrewpub.com/
