A beautiful park. But a misleading message for the disabled. The park celebrates allowing children of all abilities to play. This is portrayed in pictures and sculptures. BUT, when we visited to use the wheelchair swings (a rarity in lots of places) - the swings were chained down and there was a sign with a phone number that said to call to have them unlocked. Unfortunately, we had driven almost an hour exclusively to visit this park only to find out you have to call to have the swings unlocked. The saddest part is that they are chained to the ground. So, then you are standing (sitting rather) looking at the possibility for fun, but you cannot use them. Long story short, no one came to unlock the swings although we called multiple numbers. (It makes sense that the swings would be locked as they could potentially be dangerous if someone where to misuse them or leave the ramp down and an able bodied child trip over them. But if this park is going to have a major aspect of its marketing be about inclusion then shouldn't there be a person present at all times to unlock one of the few features that is truly accessible? Let's face it the child with disabilities can't realistically use the slides and various other items able bodied kids can, so perhaps the approach to the swings should be re-evaluated). The park is so beautiful and really looks like a lot of fun for children and families. It is clean and spacious. There is a nice walking path around it. There is a water feature for kids who want to get out of the heat. There is exercise equipment which is accessible. There is even an area for dogs if you insist on bringing yours (although most of the park is off limits to dogs). This park looks great for both adults and children. It is also secured with safety latches on the gates so kids can't accidentally escape. Had we known one had to call ahead we would have. Thus, this is a cautionary tale. The park is fabulous BUT IF YOU NEED ACCESSIBILITY CALL FIRST. read more

I have been to this park a handful of times. The first time was to drop my daughter off to volunteer setting the park up. After that, we enjoyed birthday parties there and an occasional trip to the park. As my kids have grown I really haven't had a chance to go to A Park Above but it is a great park to take anyone to. read more

This place is our favorite park to go to! There's a splash pad here but I would recommend shoes! It's slippery! There's always a ice cream truck too. There's a fence all the way around it so you don't really have to worry about kids escaping read more

Yeah! The park is reopened. It has been closed forever. They took out that fast spinning ride by the base of the green ground slides and replaced it with an igloo with shaped holes. Bummer. Kids liked that ride, but it was dangerous. They added some new patches of AstroTurf. Everything is in working order, except the water fountains are turned off due to Covid. Thankfully that Kona Shaved ice truck is there outside the gates, do you can buy bottled water and cold delights. Enjoy. read more

This park has SO very much to offer. The views are awesome. Basketball court, astro turf, playground equipment big enough for the parents to get in on the action, as well as equipment accommodating wheelchairs!!! How awesome is that?!? There are bathrooms, really clean bathrooms, outdoor workout equipment, there's even a bocce ball court! Super sized musical instruments, sandbox with toy construction diggers, plenty of swings, rock climbing apparatus, even a splash pad for the littles. Excellent place to stage a birthday party, I've already had my 8 year old's birthday there and it was a breeze to pull off. There needs to be one of these in every neighborhood in Albuquerque!!! WOW!! This place is AMAZING!! All interactive play things, giant musical instruments, splash pad (during summer), swings (even for wheelchair), workout exercises, sand box, basketball court, fake grass throughout, slides, balancing & spinning things & climbing walls, etc. this place is packed with sensory overload!! Not enough shaded areas for the big people but has plenty of sitting areas. Be sure to bring sunscreen! Every time I go it's packed and there's barely enough parking space so you may have to park on the street. Greatly thought out plan includes runaway kid proofed all fenced around area and artificial grass that you can slide down the hills without cardboard (which isn't allowed). There are bathrooms but one for each doesn't seem right for the size?!?! Anyways, this is my new favorite park to go with my monkey with a picnic! Care to join us? read more

A Park Above is about as good as parks get - as long as you leave theme parks out of the equation ;-) There's a wide assortment of activities here; a little something for everyone! Here you can exercise, climb, and ride - there's something to appeal to all age groups :-) Specifically for adults, the primary activity is watching the kids (theirs and other people's) have an awesome time. Some adults even walk their dogs. Oh, and did I mention that the park is squeaky clean AND there's lots of free parking? read more

This is a crazy cool park for the youngins. More variety from music playground devices to play, to four person seesaw's to multiple slides and climbing gyms...most on padded faux green soft grass. In my days if you didn't leave blood or a tooth on the concrete you weren't having fun. Now with parents and grandparents (us) watching out..It's much more interactive. When I was a kid, we walked to the playground...which was the back of an old school. No parents around. This park seemed like a small town with all us adult folk too. Bottom line, our granddaughter loved it and enjoyed playing with the other kids. It's clearly a park for the "next generation" to boldly go to explore/play at with their parents. Thanks for reading. This park is such a fantastic set up for children of all abilities. You do need to contact the parks and rec department should you want to use a wheelchair swing, they are locked to prevent damage from others. The park is well maintained, along walking trails, with plenty of shade, a nice clean bathroom, and water fountains. I'm hoping that for my little guys 1st birthday we'll go ahead and have a park party here and make some reservations. read more

This park is a testament to when the actual community comes together a lot of good things come out of it.. A few years ago a group of people in the community cane together & decided to build a park they raised money from donations to build this AWESOME park. Then they handed it over to the city of Rio Rancho to manage & maintain it. If you have kids, this park is a must go to. The park is well planned out, it's sectioned by age, from toddlers to teens. They have a basketball area, swings, the coolest slides, to an Exercise area, an area dedicated to dogs. read more

This is a neat little park and my 2 year old did not know where to start or finish. I appreciate New Mexico for investing in so many parks for the kids. We went on a Sunday and it was really crowded and barely any parking, they should add more parking. There were lots of activities and every time my daughter ran some where she was able to do it and not have to wait in line. They do need to fix some parts of the turf at the park and they had some really big nails in the ground near some cones that could hurt kids. Other than parking and the needed updating for safety, we had fun! read more

Best park in Albuquerque OR Rio Rancho. ONLY downside is that It can get busy though and parking can be scarce so pick your times to go. Lots of fun things for kids of all ages to do with plenty of play areas regardless of age groups. This includes a splash pad, slides and all kids of cool stuff I wish I had available to me when I was a kid...also I was really glad to see the park has swings and things integrated throughout for those who have special needs. Rio Rancho did it right over at that Park Above. Oh there is a dog park there too! read more

The City of Albuquerque prides itself on offering, by acreage, more parks and recreation areas than most cities nation-wide. And it's fair to state that indeed, there are a ton of parks around here. It's also more than fair to state that the vast majority of our playgrounds and open spaces lack some of the basics that comprise what most cities qualify as actual Parks. The vast majority of Albuquerque parks don't provide shade structures; I'd say half of 'em offer sand underfoot. During the hot dry burn of summer, this makes most Albuquerque parks virtually useless, for about a quarter of the year. And you can forget about other basics, like drinking fountains or, heaven forbid, bathrooms. You won't find 'em around here. Such categories are simply omitted from the Park & Recreation listings: https://www.cabq.gov/parksandrecreation/parks/city-parks/parks-with-amenities Do I consider myself an expert on such matters? Damn skippy. If you want a compendium on the subject, check out my Yelp list, "Kiddo Files: Parks". I take my lil' dumplin' all over this city, and last week we finally discovered A Park Above, randomly situated in the Bermuda Triangle that is Rio Rancho. Man, what a revelation. It's the anti-Burque free fun zone, a full city block of all-ages play structures padded with plasti-grass (imagine that) and plenty of shaded communal areas, perfect for kiddo birthday parties. (I had to wonder about the sheer volume, or tonnage, of Dion's pizza boxes that get trashed here each week. Knowing that Dion's is essentially New Mexican suburban soul food, I'm guessing it's beyond comprehension.) This park has everything that a park in the southwest should be expected to offer, and around here, it's tantamount to a theme park. So many bonuses. A dog park. Bathrooms and drinking fountains (imagine!). Toddler and big kid spots with working apparati. Not enough parking, but that speaks to the popularity. A very cool music area. The obligatory exercise apparati which will never actually be utilized. And the most important aspect: playthings for those of us with special needs. I watched a young girl get hoisted from her wheelchair into a swing, pushed for the better part of 30 minutes, pure joy emanating from her bugged eyes and open smile. Love this place. We just moved here and our two year old had a blast!! wasn't super busy and had plenty of parking. They also have a gym area for adults and a closed in dog park. Wear shoes they can get messy there is a sand box area with lots of things to play in. Clean bathrooms and a couple water fountains as well. read more

What a cool park! My daughter is 3 years old and she loooooooooved this place. We stopped here to play while driving through Phoenix. One hour was not enough time for her to visit each part of the park. There are several playground areas and we just didn't have enough time to get to all of them. They also had a small water play area, picnic tables, basketball courts, public restrooms and plenty of shade. One of the best parks in the United States. read more

I now know what all the talk was about. This is a park for tiny babies to older teen kids. There was a water splash part, a section where kids could play instruments, and even some swings for handicapped kids. I will definitely be going back when it's not too hot!! read more

I have a 4 year old daughter and she loves this place. It is a really good park with a lot to do. The park is very spacious which helps because it is normally packed. They have nice bathrooms and lots of canopies for shade, which is great for those hot days. speaking of hot days they also have these water jets that spout water for the kids to play in. As far as scheduling parties it is first come first serve so you have to get there really early because as I said things get really busy there. The times we have gone we have enjoyed it. Everyone seems to respect the space and that is very important. I don't see trash scattered or graffiti, which is awesome. The park is a really good size and definitely worth a visit, I highly recommend. read more

By far the best park around. This is a great place to take your kids and there's something to do for all ages. From the usual swings and slides, to a splash pad, and musical instruments, this park also has wheelchair swings so that special needs can be accommodated. The only negative is that does get extremely busy here especially during the summer and during school breaks so it can be hard to find parking. read more
