Nick's prices are reasonable and he's flexible about schedules if you give him fair notice. I really like Nick's teaching style. He tailors each lesson to my style and skill set, but it's not like we're just trying to learn the chords of a new song each week to tick off a box. Nick obviously spends a lot of time thinking about how to approach each lesson beforehand, printing out sheet music and tablature and identifying sections and guitar parts that ultimately get me into playing the song. He's always encouraging but also pushes me to try out things I haven't done much of, be it singing while playing or stomping on and off pedals during a song. He'll introduce theory or scales or chords or exercises occasionally where a certain song or riff calls for it. I definitely come out of every lesson feeling I got a little better but I've always had a lot of fun.

Such is Evolution Music in Logan Square where I decided to walk an hour on this fair day so that I could sell my keyboard. I came in, told them what I wanted to sell, and what I was looking to receive out of the exchange. Most people, like me, really try to haggle for the best price, and that's definitely what I did. Being that they were a store with financial margins, they realistically set my expectations closer to what was feasible for them. Fact of the matter is that they were respectful, realistic, and most importantly of all fair when it came to the exchange. I ultimately walked away satisfied, having met in the middle of our compromise, and sealed it with a good ol' honest handshake at that. I didn't have to write about this but I thought the person at the store today, Nathan, had good, decent integrity when it came to this transaction. It was a nice and sunny day and after walking back out of the store, the interaction left me feeling it all the more brighter... Nathan, you're fucking cool bro. I'll definitely be back in the future.

"I never heard of that!" she snapped as she came from behind a curtain. "Did you used to work or play at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra?" I asked. I wanted to say, "My visit is not a followup to looking in the window at the girl, or to meet her for the purpose of marrying her." I bought a few supplies, even though they cost a bit less elsewhere. They have a school and I guess their collection is limited to first time students and owners of music instruments. Its a business, and I hope the knowledge I shared with the counter girl helped her job. Much of what I know has come from experienced musicians who were willing to share if you had a genuine interest. My advice, maybe for strings and picks, but for quality and variety go to Andy's music store. They treat you like a tourist, and care about your visit instead of what you will spend.
