I made a reddit post asking for recommendations for a brick-and-mortar store in the Midwest to buy a uke. Aloha City was the clear favorite. So I made the pilgrimage. The owner guy is pretty phlegmatic. So if you are expecting a happyface cheerleader flattering you - this isn't the guy. His attitude was more like, "If you leave without buying anything, the world will still turn." So I didn't expect that - but I liked it. I didn't feel hurried or pressured. I told him at the outset that I was planning on spending between $100 and $200, and I could go a little higher but would not be happy about it. Even though he knew that, he let me wander around the store, trying all sorts of ukes. I cannot describe how cool this place is. More instruments than most guitar stores have, and all ukes. And uke songbooks - like two racks of them. There was another couple buying for their nephew, and they also were having a great time. He gave opinions when asked. So if I couldn't hear the difference between two ukes, I'd ask him if he could hear a difference, and he was (I believe) honest with me when he could and couldn't. Because my playing is mediocre, when I started narrowing things down, I asked him to play one uke after the other. Again - I'm hardly a big spender, but felt treated like I was as important as everyone else. He let me play the $6000 + ukes, and played a couple for me. Again, no problem. I have never felt less pressure in a sales situation. And he didn't make me feel like a jerk for asking him to play a bunch. He gave me good advice on soprano vs. concert. Anyway, it was a fun day, and I wound up spending less than my budget ($175 for the Ohana CK-180M). As I was checking out, he said, in a completely matter-of-fact voice, "The ukulele is the world's happiest instrument." I am inclined to agree. If I ever do get really good and somehow get discretionary income, and want to buy a better uke, I will drive to Park Ridge again. This store was amazing, worth the trip for sure, and I had a really fun time in addition to picking up my new ukulele. read more

We recently returned to the cute little store ... no, no, no, not to buy a ukulele or partake in the free lessons they offer, but (are you ready for this?) because my Missus needed gifts for friends and she recalled that the store offered some clever gift items. It's fun to browse here and the owner is very friendly. They're thriving in these difficult times because people are actively seeking hobbies and activities to fill their spare time, and ukes are among the most affordable and approachable string instruments out there. I have a background in the performing arts and am married to a musician. Sadly the arts have really taken a hit, and music lessons cannot be afforded by just anyone. The fact that Aloha City Ukes offers free ukulele lessons on Tuesdays from 6:30-7:30, makes this one of my favorite music stores. Lessons are taught by local legend Louie Zagoras. This is a brand new shop in my community. I heard there was a Hawaiian ukulele shop that came to town, and I had to see it to believe it! I had the opportunity to chat with the owner, and this really is a labor of love. They have an incredible collection of ukes, and though I'm not an expert, some of their top brands include: KoAloha, Kanile'a, Ohana, Lanikai, Kala, and Romero Creations. I've bought two ukes from him at separate times. A baritone for around $400 and a RomeroCreations GrandTenor for $800. Pleased with both and find him very competitive. The best thing is he doesnt have a multitude of personal and outside interests that get in the way of shipping or responsiveness. He's easy to reach via FB and his website is easy to navigate.
