Our son was a student at A Place to Learn for a couple of years. Alicia and Miguel are awesome. They open their home up to kids so they can feel loved and be able to express themselves. Our son was a pandemic baby and was shy and reserved outside of our nuclear family, so we finally bit the bullet and started daycare here and it worked wonders. They are very nurturing and make your children feel like one of the family. They taught our child how to express himself and he learned all kinds of songs and lessons. They also helped some of the children potty train, along with reinforcement at home, so the transition goes smoothly. They feed your child breakfast, a morning snack, lunch, and an afternoon snack. The meals are healthy and delicious. But be warned, our child started requesting "Miguel's lentils" at home and we didn't have the recipe! Their home is air conditioned to keep your child cool in the summer and heater to keep them warm in the winter. I would highly recommend this place for your daycare needs. read more

Alicia and Miguel are amazing! My daughter attended their in-home daycare between the age of 1-3 and it was one of the best decisions we've made for her. They are incredibly caring and patient with the kids and teach the kids to be independent, gentle and kind. Alicia is incredibly thoughtful and creative and prepares the cutest activities and art projects that decorate our living room walls. There's a nice outdoor space in their backyard for the kids to play on the play set, bike, run around or just play in nature, which they do twice a day (weather permitting). My daughter started attending A Place to Learn at 18 months old and is now gearing up to go to Preschool. As a new mom with a pandemic baby, I was pretty nervous about how my child would adjust to daycare and interacting with a new environment and people. During the transition period, I quickly learned how experienced, patient, caring, and thoughtful Alicia and Miguel are. They normalized the adjustment period and had great tips on how to help the child - include a photo of parents in their bag, make sure you say bye to them in the morning rather than sneaking off. My child was just starting to talk more, and it was clear that Alicia and Miguel were really attentive to paying attention to her and her body language to understand what she was trying to communicate. When I searched for a daycare, my number one priority was just finding a loving place that would provide a happy environment for my child to play. I did not expect how much my child would learn! Alicia and Miguel are thoughtful about their curriculum, having different themes each week (e.g., shapes, colors, how to brush your teeth, how to be a good friend). Through fun, creative activities, my child's skills (i.e., language, social, sensorial, practical life) grew immensely. She even started learning how to sing and identify colors in Spanish. I definitely feel Alicia and Miguel have set my child up for success and readiness to start preschool. An added plus is that Alicia and Miguel provide breakfast, lunch, and snacks to the kids! My child is a pretty picky eater, but she eats well at daycare! Previously my child would refuse to eat anything green. By some miracle, Alicia and Miguel got her to start eating broccoli! I have to give another review about Alicia and Miguel. My son outgrew A Place to Learn Daycare a few years ago. Why am I posting a new review you ask? Well, on occasion when I haven't had childcare my 6 1/2 year old son asks if he can go to Alicia and Miguel's. He tells me he misses them and asks to visit. These days when we do get a chance to visit he's of course outgrown all the toys and the children but there is something very special about this little blue house it is full of love and I can still feel it when we enter. Lucky for us they still let us crash their awesome Christmas parties! I have never let anyone watch my son other his Grandma, his Auntie and of course Alicia and Miguel. read more

My daughter went to A Place to Learn for about 2 years and we are so grateful to Alicia and Miguel! They are loving, patient, and really understood my daughter's personality. Since attending A Place to Learn, I've seen my daughter's verbal, emotional, and social skills develop dramatically. I can't recommend A Place to Learn highly enough!!! My two year old daughter has been there for 1 year and I feel grateful everyday that we found Alicia and Miguel's daycare. They are incredibly loving, patient, and nurturing to all of the children and they do a wonderful job of cultivating a sweet and caring community. My daughter loves going to school and is learning so much. Their house (and yard) are clean and comfortable, their food is delicious, and their curriculum is fun and engaging. We first found out about A Place to Learn when our older daughter's preschool teacher (highly respected in the Millbrae community) mentioned that Alicia and Miguel came highly recommended by several parents she knew. We were eager to get her started with them and enrolled our daughter as soon as they had an opening. From day one, Alicia and Miguel embraced our daughter with genuinely loving arms. They are both incredibly nurturing in their approach which made our daughter's initial transition worry-free. They have a keen knowledge of developmental stages and how to encourage children of varied ages to engage in group activities. They are kind yet still provide necessary boundaries and language to help children share with each other, play safely and learn how to verbalize what they need. The beautiful and creative crafts they arrange for each week reflect how much they truly care about creating a space for the children to have fun and flourish. We are so fortunate to have our 1.5 year old daughter attend A Place to Learn with Alicia and Miguel and look forward to watching her continuing to grow develop under their expertise and loving care. read more

We entrusted both our kids to Miguel and Alicia's care. Both of our kids turned out way ahead of the curve, and I wish I could say it was because of our exceptional parenting. To be honest, we could usually trace most surprising new development to the tutelage of M&A. They operate out of their home, provide meals, potty train... all for a very reasonable rate, especially in the Bay Area. If they raised their rates considerably I would still send a third kid if we had one. And I'm cheap! read more

Went for a tour of this place and all was well until the lady told me she didn't know if she wanted to take on my child as she has Down syndrome. You should have seen the horror on her husband's face too. My husband rushed us out of there saying he'd seen enough. I am appalled that a day care in Millbrae or anywhere in fact, discriminates on a child's developmental ability. Children are children and as day care owners, they should learn to educate themselves on all types of abilities/disabilities. She said she would look into it, and call me back...never heard back! And that's why a month and a half later, here I am, writing this review. I find it ironic that the place is called A Place To Learn'! read more

Agree 110% with Michelle's review. Alicia and Miguel are fantastic! I was quite nervous leaving my son for the first time with someone other than my my mom when I had to go back to work. They had me bring my son in and just hang out, and let him get used to them. It took a little time to adjust but very soon he was walking me out and shutting the door behind me! LOL. Alicia used to be a Montessori teacher which I was super excited about. They do art projects, story time, crafts/cards for events like Mother's Day, etc. I love that they do not have a tv. Many other daycares I checked out had tvs going. Food is all homemade and healthy. And yes, they are both super patient and loving. Alicia always takes her time to talk to me about his day, what they did, etc. My son loves them and is always happy when I pick him up. I can't recommend this daycare enough. My kids are now 9 and 6, but they both went to A Place to Learn for daycare when they were little, and they loved it, and so did my husband and I. Everything the other reviewers wrote is true -- Alicia & Miguel are warm, patient, kind, organized, friendly and communicative. And I think Alicia's background as an educator helped my kids have such a strong start in their elementary school years. Both of them knew the alphabet super-early and were early readers too. They did a ton of art projects, holiday projects and pre-school exercises while at daycare. And the daycare's backyard was a great, safe place for them to play everyday too. Alicia & Miguel also care about the kids' nutrition and served them homemade meals everyday. They have really fun holiday parties for the kids and parents too. Anyway, our family spent a total of nearly 5 years with A Place to Learn and Alicia and Miguel, and we felt great about the experience. They're great people, and our kids really benefited. read more

We've sent our 3 yr-old daughter to Alicia and Miguel for almost 2 years now and watched her flourish in this warm and supportive environment, so was an easy choice to start her one-year old brother a few months ago. What we like about A Place to Learn: - Alicia is a former Montessori teacher and knows all the Montessori-Jedi tricks (proper structuring of materials, songs that our three-year old comes home singing, etc.) to get kids learning in a fun way - Alicia and Miguel have a warm way of resolving the inevitable toddler conflicts over toys in a way that we think truly does help them develop socially and emotionally - There's ample time for unstructured play -- whenever the weather is nice we find the kids roaming around their yard, playing on their outdoor play equipment, or riding around on their little tricycles. When the weather is bad we find them tromping around the house on "bear hunts." - They do amazing art projects the kids love, like making homemade organic play-do (that they can then bring home), finger-painting, or doing various construction-paper projects - They provide home-cooked meals for BOTH breakfast AND lunch -- totally essential when you're trying to get out the door and to work on time with two little ones (or one, for that matter) - We'd like to take some credit ourselves, but our daughter's vocabulary has truly taken off, and much of it was learned at "school" All in all we feel it is a great deal that provides all the buzzwords of the more pretentious preschool / daycares in the city w/ two-year waiting lists ("play-based, Montessori-inspired learning w/ a focus on developing your child's social-emotional skills") in a supportive, no-drama family environment free of any snobbishness (and more affordable than some of them as well). read more

Alicia and Miguel - the co-owners of this in-home daycare center are truly AMAZING! They are patient, kind, energetic, organized, efficient, communicative, and much more. My daughter attended their daycare for two years (age 4 mos. - 2 years) and was happy every day! They cook homemade meals for the children, have a sweet play area in the backyard, do art projects and morning circle, naptime, and parties for the families at the holidays. Their prices are VERY reasonable and they are open M-F 7:45-6. They accept small babies through age 4. I could go on and on and on.... They are the best daycare center. If you need to go back to work and will be driving anywhere near Millbrae, consider this home daycare. They are the BEST! read more

Echoing the other reviews on here, Alicia & Miguel are fantastic. Knowing my son was in good and loving hands made going back to work a lot easier. He has been there for over a year, and the only reason we are leaving them is because we are moving. They keep a clean home, cook well balanced meals for the children, and shower them with love and affection. The children enjoy story time, circle time, and do lots of arts & crafts. Our son has thrived in their care. They also go above and beyond, and host get togethers for their daycare families during holidays and special occasions. They have become like family to us, and we are very sad to have to leave! :( read more

My daughter has been with Miguel and Alicia for two 1/2 wonderful years. They are both STELLAR in the care that they provide for the children at A Place to Learn. As an educator, I've been amazed at how well they are able to model and teach in a caring, gentle manner. As a new parent, I have learned a great deal from them in the time we have been at A Place to Learn. They provide daily feedback and advice, and are great resources for the array of issues that come with raising a child. They provide stimulating activities, projects, nutritious meals and a whole lot of love to the children. Moreover, their house is very clean, well organized, safe and welcoming.
