I've been coming here for several years, and I would get my hair done for dances in high school, simple haircuts, and even makeup application for my rehearsal dinner before my wedding. I have had a few favorite stylists I have come to see at a Shear Thing, but they unfortunately have since moved on to other endeavors. However, I still keep coming back here because I always have a great and friendly stylist each time. The biggest thing, as well, is that they ALWAYS fit me in to their schedule at a very convenient time and their online form to book an appointment is very easy to use. Their eyebrow waxing and shaping always looks fantastic and I make it a point to get my eyebrows waxed with them each time because they don't ever over wax or shape them strangely. I also always get my haircut here and it always makes me feel fantastic and have a fresh look. The atmosphere in the shop has always been so comforting and clean and very stylish. Today was my first time going here and I was super impressed. I asked for recommendations from friends and was not disappointed in this salon. Upon arriving, I was greeted by the owner who gave me a welcome kit with coupons for the first 4 visits and offered me a drink (citrus or iced water). The salon is very chic and trendy, and the ladies there are fantastic. Jessica was my stylist and she did a fantastic job - gave me the cut I was looking for and even took the time to teach me some tricks. I got a women's cut and style from Jessica. The cut was good, but the styling was not great and seemed really lazy to me. She sprayed a bit of product on just the back of my hair and diffused it for all of 5 minutes before declaring it "done." I left the salon with very wet, frizzy hair. This is not what I expected from a cut and style that was $42 before tip. I understand everyone has their bad/off days, but I would not suggest phoning it in like this with a new client. read more

I gave one star for this pedicure because zholie was nice and the massage was fine. When it came to painting it was an obvious struggle but I couldn't tell how bad it was until I got out in the light. It was the worst I've ever had. Lots of dry winter skin left and the picture of the polish speaks for itself. She did not use nippers either and there were jagged edges on my nails. I was very disappointed. read more

I went to A Shear Thing based on the other reviews I had found here. I found a coupon on their site for 50% off a hair cut for new clients, so I wanted to try it out and hopefully save a little money at the same time. Unfortunately, I don't feel that my experience lived up to what others have said. Perhaps my stylist was having a bad day, but I will certainly not be back. The receptionist (whom I believe is new, more on that later) was very cheerful and offered me water almost immediately right after I walked in, so I wish I could give 5 stars for her. However, things rapidly went downhill once I met my stylist, Taylor. As I stated before, she could have been having a bad day which I completely understand. But it truly was painful trying to have a conversation with her since she seemed negative about practically every subject we talked about, including her job! As a brand new client, this was extremely off-putting as it certainly seemed like she didn't enjoy being there at all. Later into the cut, another stylist/salon manager stopped by her station and both women began saying rude things about the new receptionist who was so nice to me earlier. This is extremely unprofessional and was very uncomfortable to sit through. Before the other woman left Taylor's station, she remarked how thick my hair was and Taylor made a comment about it that was a bit insulting. If you're a trained stylist and I'm paying (and tipping) you to do it, comments about how much of a pain it is to cut will not make me come back to you. Furthermore, when I scheduled my appointment, I let the receptionist know that it usually takes longer to get through my hair with the intention of not screwing over my stylist's schedule. So I don't get what the comment was for if I'm not inconveniencing anyone by being there (and paying to be there!). After this transpired, Taylor asked me if she could flat iron my hair because it would help her see exactly where the layers would be in my hair. Not thinking much of it, I agreed (this will be important later). So the cut starts wrapping up and she goes around the front of me to reshape my bangs. However, the positioning that she used for her body was extremely awkward. My left knee was literally in her crotch the entire time she did my bangs. It might not bother other people, but I definitely did not appreciate the contact. The cut finished and it wound up pretty decent, so Taylor did well in that regard. But when I was brought to check out, I was informed (by an entirely different receptionist) that the flat iron tacked on an entire $10 extra to the service!! I felt tricked since I was never informed of the extra cost when Taylor asked me initially. I was going to buy a product, but after that revelation decided against it. After telling the receptionist that I didn't know that the flat iron had an added cost, she told me that it was fine since I was getting my hair cut for 50% off. No ma'am, it's not "fine." Especially since at this point, I felt deceived and taken advantage of by Taylor and/or the salon to make up for a portion of the "half-price" cut I supposedly received. I was offered no solution, but instead a "Sorry, sucker." Based on this, I can only assume A Shear Thing condones deceiving new clients to make an entire $10 extra off of them, so I hope they don't go spending it all in one place. I paid and left a tip even though I really wish I hadn't now, but it is what it is. Overall this salon gets two stars. 3 for the haircut (it's average), 1 for the stylist, and 5 for the receptionist. The average works out to 3 stars, but I feel the need to deduct 1 for the near 30 minute process it took for me to check out. And no it wasn't my doing, the second receptionist kept switching tasks and appeared to have trouble getting the computer system figured out. I worked at another salon down the road a little over a year ago and we never charged for a flat iron/curling and it was in the same price range as this salon. I've started going to another salon in a different state while I'm at school and it's the same story there. Clearly this salon doesn't get it. I feel that A Shear Thing is really just a cheap salon masquerading as high-scale, and my experience cements that belief. I'm glad that other people were able to go here and have positive experiences, but unfortunately I did not. I will not and could not in good conscience recommend this salon to anyone. Frankly, I think Tabatha would have some fun with this one. Buyer beware. Edit: Took off a star because after almost a year, this salon is the worst one I have ever experienced. While visiting my mom, I decided to treat her to a haircut and also get myself a hair cut and color. I heard that this salon was good through the conversation threads. So, I booked an appointment for us. When we arrived, we were offered coffee, tea, hot chocolate or apple cider. Kristen listened to what I thought I wanted, gave me a few suggestions, and we were on our way. Color and cut later, I loved my hair. My mother, who is maybe the most picky person I've ever known, got her hair cut a la Katie Holmes, and it turned out fantastic. My current stylist moved recently, so I was in need of a new stylist. Based on Yelp reviews of salons close to my home, I narrowed it down to A Shear Thing and Stem. I researched both of their sites and both had photos/bios of all their stylists, but I really wanted to see examples of their work as well. I ended up finding some photos of client transformations on A Shear Thing's Facebook page--and one was almost identical to a style/color I had recently pinned. I inquired who the stylist was and was told it was Connie Hernandez. Connie's bio on the site specified she was good with fine hair, so that sealed the deal for me. I requested an appointment with Connie via their website and they called me the next morning to schedule. Connie was able to get me in that evening for a cut and highlight. The receptionist was very cheerful and friendly and I got in for my appointment right on time. Connie did a partial highlight and a glaze (which was something new for me), then a cut and style. I absolutely love the dimension of the color (no stripes!) and the cut is fan-friggin-tastic. I have fine, stick-straight hair and every stylist I've ever been to always insists on straightening it even more when they style it--even though I'm clear that's not the look I'm trying to achieve. Not Connie though. She has fine hair too, so she gets it. She styled my hair very similar to how I do it, but showed me some new tricks to amp up the volume even more. A Shear Thing offers a 50% off coupon for first time clients on their website and I also received a discount on the products I purchased. The only reason that this place didn't get a 5 star from me is because my (and several friends) have had appointments messed up too many times. We've all shown up at least once to an appointment where the receptionist says that we're not scheduled. Other than that, the stylists are great and always being trained on new techniques and color treatments. My stylist, Aubrey, has introduced me to several products specifically for my hair type and style that have truly made my morning routine much easier. She made me feel comfortable with trying new styles and I trust her ability to make me look great! Prices are reasonable, and they also do nails, makeup, facials and waxing. This place comes highly recommended, but I will definitely call the day before an appointment just to make sure I'm on the books for the next day so I don't drive all the way there to be told that I am not scheduled. read more

Stopped in around 3:30 in the afternoon with no appointment in desperate need of a pedicure. The receptionist was able to get me in right away and offered some yummy watermelon infused water to take with me. Pricing is fair ($25 for a 30 minute mini pedicure, $45 for an hour long spa pedicure - totally worth it with a sugar scrub, mask, and extra massage) and the pedicurist, Taylor was super friendly and easy to talk to. I was also able to get a special Vinylux polish and topcoat, similar to shellac, that hardens in natural sunlight and protects (supposedly) a week longer than regular polish against chips, for no extra charge. I LOVE a Shear Thing Salon! I have been seeing Nicole for years to get my hair cut and highlighted, and she always does exactly what I want and does a fantastic job. She is so fun to talk to while she is styling and highlighting my hair. In fact, everyone there seems to always be positive and in a good mood. The appointment reminder call and email that I get is always very helpful as well. Also, there are always fun promotions going on that are attractive but not pushy. A Shear Thing is the first salon that makes me feel welcomed and that I get along with not just those that do my hair and nails but most all of the girls that work there. I have been going for over a year to get my nails done by Deloris and she is wonderful. She is always letting me experiment with colors and giving me good ideas. My nails always come out looking great! I also get my hair done by Zholie who is amazing! In the past I have struggled to hold a conversation with the stylist but when Zholie is doing my hair we can't stop talking. She is full of helpful hints and knowledge about my hair. There are so many great personalities at the salon that I think you could find anyone that fits your personality and would make the experience worth while! I have had a few experiences of "disappearing" from the schedule but when the salon was very accommodating to resolve the issue and set things right. It hasn't stopped me from going back and enjoying each visit. read more

The first time I stepped foot into this salon, I was hesitant. Would I find a lifelong stylist or would she move away a month after my first cut to pursue a career with some big shot hair company like John Frieda? I say this because this is the story of anyone I've ever been devoted to, scissors, hairspray, flatirons and all. When I walked in, I was immediately greeted by the friendly staff. They offered me a glass of water embellished with cucumber. The stylist, Jen, asked exactly how much I wanted taken off and we went from there. I was so pleased with the results (and the haircut was $34). They also give you a coupon book with 20% off your next purchase and visit. I must say that the next time I went in, it was for an eyebrow wax and facial. I was amazed at the quality of what I received for the price they charged. Please support this business. I stopped in here on a whim - the receptionist wasn't overly friendly but my stylist, Molly did a great job. I hate having my hair done professionally because I'm a baby about it being pulled/snagged/ripped but she was understanding and gentle enough that I actually thought about something else instead of cringing the whole time. Micala, my stylist, is always friendly and does exactly what I want or offers up suggestions when I know I just need a change. First off let me start with this - my stylist is 5 plus Stars!! It's the salon I am not happy with. It has changed over the years I have been going and not for the better. I have been coming here for about 7 years. Over the years I have noticed that the salon has less and less clients on Saturdays - which is the day I usually go there. I was there this weekend - Saturday - and I was the only client there at 9 am. So, I get all ready for hair color - take out my ipad - walk up to the desk and ask for the Wi-Fi password. I was TOLD that they do NOT offer Wi-Fi. Told that they upgraded (upgraded but didn't get Wi-Fi for the customers - helloooooo 2016!) Told they had it for a short time but it slowed down the register so they got rid of it. I looked at her like a deer in headlights. If I didn't LOVE my stylist - I may have walked out. Not only because of the Wi-Fi issue but she didn't even apologize. I'm not sure if she was the owner or relative of but she was not dressed in the normal black that the staff dresses in. I am ready for my stylist to go elsewhere and I will follow her..with a smile. read more

First time customer and I had a great experiance. The receptionists were very welcoming over the phone and in person. My stylist Macayla was beyond wonderful. I was very impressed with her skills and knowledge of hair and skin care. It was great that she wanted to know what I wanted in a hair style and I loved that she gave me her opinion on what she thought would be a good look for me. I have never had a stylist give me one on one attention before and actually listen to me and help me finalize the look i wanted. She took care of me from begining to end and really wanted to make sure I was happy with the look WE created together....and I was! I would HIGHLY recommend this salon! read more

I brought my daughter in last fall to have her hair cut and highlighted with Jessica. This was the 1st time my daughters hair was highlighted. The stylist was not very friendly and I noticed she barely talked or interacted with my daughter during the process. When she got done, after 2 1/2 hours, I noticed that my daughter's hair was unevenly cut!! The salon was getting ready to close and there was a massive thunderstorm, and I just wanted to get out of there----NOT a good experience. And to boot, I ended up spending $150 for it all! Absolutely LOVE this place! It is the only salon I have gone to where I would be more than glad to let any of the girls take care of me. My absolute fav stylist is Taylor, not just for her super fab personality (we always have tons of fun during the cut/color) but also for the great job she does making me look great. She is always looking to make my experience a good one and always goes above and beyond to make sure I am 100% satisfied before I leave. I recently took my daughter to get a hair cut by Jessica. I researched to find the best place because she had long hair and wanted to go short. Since, the salon was rated #1 in Shawnee I thought it was a good choice. When I first meet her she was not friendly and hardly smiled at us. My daughter showed her a picture of how short she wanted and Jessica didn't think it would look good. She did not talk or listen to my daughter. When we got home my daughters hair was uneven. I've had subpar and terrible service now at this salon. I am reminded why I usually go to a salon 20 minutes from my house. The most recent time I went the stylist, Cindy, knew I was taking pictures that same day. She asked if I had layers, to which I replied yes, and then she only cut half an inch off the bottom layer. I had to ask her to cut my bangs shorter 3 times and then they were still too long. When I told her I liked my hair very choppy and notched she did a little to my bangs and then made my hair completely stick straight. I had to go home and spend 45 minutes recutting my bangs, notching what little she did cut, and then curling my hair so it looked okay for my pictures. I spent twice as much time as something I spent 45$ on. Completely ridiculous. I will not be getting my hair cut there again. read more

The salon is very nice & clean, and I enjoyed the nice array of refreshments. However, every time I've ever been there, I've felt rushed like they overschedule & are scrambling to get to the next person. Kristen was my stylist, and I went to her 5 times before I ultimately decided to go to a different salon. She is VERY direct, very rushed, and if you have any hesitation whatsoever about what you want done, don't ask her opinion because she "checks out" & basically says she doesn't care cuz it's not her hair & make a decision. My hair has a strange & uneven wave pattern to it, so I prefer it to be cut dry, which Kristen didn't have a problem with it, but I thought that would mean she would actually straighten my hair like I've asked her to do before. I assumed I was saving her time by not washing my hair, thus allowing more time to style it, but just like every other time before, she cut it, ran the straightener through about 3-4 times and sent me out the door. Every time I've went to her, I had to go home and style my hair myself before I could determine if I liked it or not, and most of the time, I didn't like it because I felt she didn't listen to what I wanted. I don't think it's fair to pay $40+ for a haircut + tip for about 10 mins of her time & STILL have to go home & style it myself. She does a great job with highlights but overall, I found her to be too rushed. If you're even the least bit thin-skinned or if you like to feel accomidated, then Kristen is NOT the sylist for you.
