If there is just one church you can squeeze into your travel schedule, go and explore this Benedictine abbey high up on a rock of Terra Murata, the ancient and picturesque part of the island of Procida. Hiking uphill is not easy, but doable at any fitness level - even the nonexistent one. But check out opening hours before you go!
Your rewards? Prime location! Prime views of the Gulf of Napels and Marina Corricella in pastel colours along the way, a pretty church with history dating back to the 16th century and a close look at the statues of Jesus and Mary that will be carried around Terra Murata on Good Friday.
There are two Good Friday Processions starting from San Michele Arcangelo: one in the morning about 8 am and one in the evening at 8 pm. Best locations to watch the processions are Piazza dei Martiri or Piazza della Repubblica. So wonderful to watch both. In the morning even the little ones participate and mourn the death of Jesus. Babies dressed in black get carried around by their parents ... and often fall asleep ... sleep of the blessed ;o)). read more
