Have come home after spending $78 dollars for a single meal and drink which actually adds up to no more than $55 from the stated menu. Not only have I been ripped off and stolen from, but so sneakily and slyly so. How disgusting and shameful. Not only an utter disgrace but lack of any empathy doing this to a kind and polite customer. Cannot believe I have been ripped off this disgustingly. Shame on whoever runs this place. My first time here in Australia I walked down the strip to find something to eat and stumbled across this spot as they seem to have the most traffic. I've come to realize this place is always packed so expect a delay in your food. We were seated immediately and the manger walked us to our seat. If you are into music the decor is highly musically influenced. Me being a musician I bonded with it immediately. Unfortunately I was dis satisfied with the service to make me a drink as simple as a sidecar. I was restricted to what cocktails they had on the menu but they have a full bar. I was told "we are way to busy to make drinks other than our cocktail but your welcome to order a spirit and a drink" in my opinion they were to lazy to make one. The pumpkin soup was extremely bitter and the salmon burger was just garbage. Let me describe Abbey Road Cafe in three words: Elvis, Overpriced & Average On a busy Saturday night, the only reason I came here was for a friend's birthday. It was a group of eight of us, so we reserved a table mid-week. Food: I read previous reviews and knew not to expect anything grand, so we ordered: - U.K pizza tomato base, mozzarella, mushroom, bacon and tomato $20 - Risotto with chicken, asparagus and roast pumpkin $26 - Kangaroo Souvlaki served in pita bread with caramelized onions, mushroom, melted cheddar, lettuce, BBQ sauce and chips $27 - Lemon Meringue Pie with citrus cream $9.5 The pizza was tasteless and bland. The souvlaki meat is cooked on skewers and brought to you un-stuffed inside the pita bread, good luck with that. The kangaroo was overcooked, and again, on a skewer. Usually when food comes to you, you don't want to think about how to prepare to eat it, you just want to munch on a tasty meal. My friend who ordered the risotto said it tasted good, but I thought it looked unappetizing. Honestly, they do have HUGE portions, but it is so unnecessary when the food is so average. Not one person in our group finished their plate. What a waste. If you have to go here, just split something. Drinks: On tap, nothing caught my eye, they only have 4 draft beverages to choose from. In saying that, it's worth it to get the $24 table tap. It's huge, and you can get 8-ish drinks out of it. So that's not so bad. The beer snob that I am ordered a Dogbolter $9. Service: Our waiter never failed to have a smile on his face, and was very funny and welcoming. Things changed when we had to wait for our check to pay; we all got $ together, and sat for about 30 minutes just waiting to get out of there. Venue: I really liked the look of this place. Posters are everywhere with different artists all on one wall. They have hanging instruments, even a drum kit. And one wall has a piano nailed to it. How cool. Even the bar looked interesting in decor. We listened to Elvis the whole night, then at 9:30 pm a live musician came on, and he wasn't that bad and had a good playlist. My suggestion to you is to come here in a small group (as it is a loud place) and sit down to enjoy one of those table taps. If you get hungry, munch on something safe, like an appetizer or a dessert. And I have to note, it might sound silly but I actually found this place hard to find. Stumbled upon this place, whilst doing the touristy thing and exploring St Kilda. Located on Acland Street, amongst several other cafes, it caught my attention for its interesting looking decor, with a definite music theme happening. There's posters and memorabilia of The Beatles of course (hence the name), but there's also pictures of other musicians and other famous faces. Records hung up on the wall, and musical instruments hanging from the ceiling emphasize what this place is about. There's plenty of seating indoors and outdoors, with a fairly relaxed atmosphere, and looked to be full of other travellers, looking to escape the heat. We ordered a few pints of beer to cool down, service wasn't the greatest, and it was about $9 for a pint of a pale ale, so a little bit steep. The clientele was a little mixed, but definitely most people were there for a few drinks, rather than a meal. I can imagine this place getting really rowdy in the evenings, so probably not the best place for a family to have a relaxed meal. I saw one guy with his friends, already really drunk, and its not even 2pm, harassing the waitress. Someone was getting kicked out soon! Decent place to hang out, if you're not sure of your next move, just for a drink or two, as well as for watching the world go by. Will have to try the food next time. read more

This review is not based at all on their food because I have not tried any. My friends and I just came here to hang out and have a couple drinks. From what I have HEARD from other people, their food is not to die for, but I do enjoy coming here just to hang out. Abbey Road is very very spacious, with wooden tables, decorations of flags, and a lot of seating. It is not very loud at all, just a low-volume television turned on and some background conversations of other people so it makes it very easy to truly sit down and talk (which you cannot really get with typical loud pubs). They have a fully stocked bar and a huge drink menu, so you will probably find something that you enjoy. They serve you beer pitchers right to your table complete with cups for everyone, which is a bit more relaxing than a typical place where you have to go up to the bar to order. Their prices are not bad - $10 for a pitcher of beer. The place is very clean too, customer service was friendly, and overall a very relaxing place to be. Again, I have not tried the food here. But I do recommend just spending some time relaxing with some drinks, even if you eat elsewhere. read more

Love the theme of this restaurant. However this is somewhere you want to go if you're okay with a spot that plays music extremely loud so it's hard to talk to the person right next to you. We got there and were surprisingly seated pretty much right away despite the crowd. The menu was good. We started off with a 2 liter beer dispenser which was pretty cool to get. Noticed a few tables with it so had to order it ourselves. The waitress mentioned that it amounted to 8 beers but unless I was pouring light, it was no more than 5 and a half beers. Our table ordered the fish and chips, Margherita pizza, and chicken and mushroom pie. The pie was delicious! But a bit small for the price ($24). Came with fries and mushy peas. I was told that the fish and chips were good and pizza was okay. Service was fine for it being a pretty busy day. You just have to make sure you're waving down the server to grab their attention. Overall, fun atmosphere, okay food. I would probably go back to just grab some beers. Would not recommend for families with small children. read more

I'm sure you can imagine my delight as I was wandering along Ackland St one afternoon only to discover a bar named after one of my favourite Beatle's album (which in turn is named after their recording studio), so I pretty quickly changed my destination and went inside to not only have a beer but to also check the place out. Okay, it's probably not the best place for a beer (or a bite to eat because it is also a restaurant), but it still is a pretty cool place, especially how there is a number of pieces of memorabilia on the walls (including a poster of the cover of Abbey Road). Okay, there is more than just Beatles paraphernalia here, but the fab four do certainly take up a bulk of the place, though it was somewhat disappointing that the music that was being piped over the speakers was a lot more contemporary. read more

I like the decor and the ambiance here. Abbey rd Cafe is not really what Id call a cafe at all, because it seems to me that people come to drink alcohol more than they come to drink coffee. But hey, who cares? Records on the wall, surrounded by superstar faces make up the decor, and personally I like it. Its not done in a Hard Rock Cafe kind of way with so much going on that you cant look at your company for all the distractions. Great drinks, and decent food make it an easy place to hang out, and the staff are pretty friendy, usually up for a chat if they arent too busy. If they improve their menu a bit, I think this place would really fill up. read more

Cool spot right on the street to do some people watching. A bigger mix of young and old folks making us feel more comfortable than some of the other millennial only hangouts. What a fun night we had! The atmosphere was so groovy and relaxed, loved the decor and the atmosphere. My husband was especially pleased with the $30 beer tower, and I would have to say the chicken risotto was the best I've ever tasted! I looooove the atmosphere here! Musical instruments hang from the ceiling, band pictures cover the walls and you are always greeted heartily by the owner when you walk in the door. The booths add a great retro touch and are super comfy too. The menu is extensive and has you covered for any breakfast, lunch or brunch combination you could think of. The coffees are great (especially the iced coffee served with a generous lathering of whipped cream!). Prices are very reasonable and the staff are super accommodating. This place had a great vibe on a dreary Melbourne afternoon with the music bussling- staff running around and a great older guy in tats, long hair and a bit of bling seating people and manning the floor. The food was passable but nothing amazing. I had the burger and I would be 99% sure the bun was stale so just didn't eat it. It was so massive and the fries were so tasty that it was enough without the bun anyway. Others on the table had a couple of salads which were good but all the meat was cooked super rare so if you like it more well done remember to let them know. Still enjoyed the dressings and veggies on the Lamb & Beef Salad. Stand out seemed to be the ribs- but that was also the most expensive dish at $35 for lunch so depending on your budget think you could have an enjoyable drink and feed here. Don't expect to be WOW'ed but it was a nice afternoon and the staff were pretty attentive too. read more

Not very impressed. My son ordered a "margarita" pizza. It was a boxed frozen cheese pizza. Definitely not margarita and couldn't believe it was from a box-no way it was homemade. So it's fine fair, nothing too adventurous, but served our purpose. The wait staff seemed reasonably engaged and attentive. I had the parmigiana, it was a little dry, but fine. The espresso martini was very well made. Can't comment on the food, although we probably wouldn't eat here as it seems more of a drinking venue and less about the food quality. Stopped in for a drink before heading somewhere else for dinner. I was intrigued to check it out as it was a fun rock-n-roll themed bar with music memorabilia and instruments adorning the walls. The menu looked like your standard bar fare and the beer I had was good. My only disappointment was they were not playing any music from the artists they displayed. It was all modern rock which is fine but took away from the overall ambiance. Abbey Road has a fun vibe. There are plenty of places to sit for a coffee, breakfast, lunch or beer and the place is full of decorative posters and props. The music is at a reasonable volume so it's easy to chat. The food is not fancy, and not recommend. The beer is standard, with not a lot of options, but at reasonable prices. :) The service is a mix. The night staff are always smiles and chatty. However the female staff in the morning are off putting. I think they have the best coffee on acland, however the consumer service makes or breaks opinions for some people. I've avoided my coffee runs at Abbey Road now as my last few visits were met with ice cold glares from angry females obviously not wanting to be working. I've had "what do you want" instead of what can I get you. Ive had them roll their eyes at me when they miss understand my order and I have to correct them. I am a friendly, shy, and pleasant woman with a low approachable tone, so I am uncertain to why they are so rude. I know that the owner John wouldn't keep them if he caught them being rude to a customer. I have never seen someone so passionate and involved in his restaurant. I see him at 6:30 every morning as I wait for my tram. He is reading his newspaper, or chatting to a customer. He watches the floor and makes sure his customers are happy and being attended to. He looks intimidating with his long hair, large frame and tats, but is only too friendly. I would recommend this place as a cosy little starter to the night. read more

This place had potential however the problem is the owners. The rudest, ignorant inexperience people I have ever seen. They need to learn it is called the "Hospitality Industry" for a reason. They are abusive to patrons and yell obscenities to past people. There is obviously something terribly wrong with them. Unlike most people who come here for the atmosphere and the beer, I came for the food. Don't bother. It's just like the name suggests, English. Don't get me wrong the place is very cool and I am sure it would be good to come for a couple of drinks, just not the food. My mum is English and I have an English passport so I am aloud to say that English food is really subpar. My recommendation would be for the kitchen to have a look at the quality of the food in other restaurants in the area and make a couple of changes. If that was to happen I would defiantly come here more often. read more

This place has really interesting decor and a great classic rock soundtrack. The service was no-frills and fast in the best way. Super cozy table by the window with armchairs made it a very comfortable experience and you are able to order a whole pot of tea, which I love. The Expectations: From looking at the menu, and the prices, I was expecting a decent feed. The venue looked nice, however this is the first time I have walked in the vicinity of this place, and not been accosted by loud groups of people teeming out the door, and music blaring. Worth a shot! The Food: Beyond disappointing. If I am going to pay more than $20 for a pie, it had better be home-made and delicious. Instead, I was served something that could only have been factory-made (strange that it looked identical to the dish served to the table behind me). If someone told me they bought their pies from the gourmet pie section in the frozen goods aisle of the supermarket, I would not fall off my chair in surprise. As above, for the (luke-warm) pizza. As above, for the chips. I have made better potato chips from a packet. These ones were over-cooked, not cooked correctly, and smothered in oil. Also, very brown. Best thing about the food: the garlic bread. This should not be a restaurant's main selling point. The Service: Wait-person advised us that they would not start cooking the main until we had finished eating the entree. What a system! To avoid being there for hours, we elected to have everything brought out at once. (Couldn't the Head Microwaver multi-task?). The only thing reasonably priced in this joint was the beer. Glad I got a bottle though. If you can't trust the staff to whip up a decent meal at these prices, I'd be dubious about their ability to pull beer in the correct fashion. The Staff: Served by three different wait-persons. Did not think there was any point in asking them the provenance of the food I had eaten. Was almost too scared to ask, in a way. The Toilets: Located out the back, seemingly in the garage. Whilst the toilets themselves were reasonably clean, I felt dirty just walking to and from them. So much so, that I left the restaurant and went to the supermarket to purchase antiseptic clean wipes to use before eating. If only I had known of the fate to bestow me, I would have also grabbed at the supermarket: a pack of 4 gourmet pies, chips, pizza; and gone home, having a decent meal at a quarter of the price. Oh! And I would have cooked it better. The Tip: Zero tip. Also, PLEASE do not eat here. Stick to drinking their (bottled) beer, and hanging out in a pretty adequately decorated venue. Went here on a whim, and a I regret it whole heartedly. Starter of chicken wings, microwaved (obvious due to mixed temp and chewy meat) and had to be sent back due to being cold. Avoid. Main of pork belly burger, cooked like an amateur. The fat wasn't rendered and was basically a bread roll with pig fat. Manager was accommodating and provided a free replacement of the abbey burger. That was acceptable, but still sub par. The beer list was like a university bar that didn't know what quality meant. All in all, a great location sullied by meals prepared by a first year apprentice.
