So, when my friend Shaun told me we would indeed be starting the day banging to our hearts content I was understandably intrigued but wasn't sure how the wife would take it... i read to the end of the text and saw he was talking about clay pigeon shooting, "Ah", I thought, "I'm much more likely to be allowed to do that" So, onwards then to Hilltop Shooting Sports where they offer a wide range of options for those inclined to point shooty things at inanimate objects and feel a wee tingle when the bullet / paint / shot hits the target and something goes splat. We indulged in clay pigeon shooting with shotguns and 50 cartridges each... it took a while to get used to the gun having never shot before but it wasn't at all as bad as I expected. I had visions of the recoil ripping my shoulder from its socket as I inadvertently killed the instructor... actually it is quite a gentle bump and the lesson was thoroughly enjoyable. I hit 20 out of 40 of my clays which I was very happy with. The cost for a gun, 50 cartridges, 50 clays and instruction (very good by the way) was 50 Euro... there are faster ways to blow your cash, but not many. Never the less it was fun and I would do it again.

The stable managers were very helpful in matching horse to rider and helping with getting on. I was very happy to have the extended ride and the trek was worth it! The route was super muddy because of rain earlier in the night. For about half the trip, we didn't have an exact path and wove through the forest/countryside. The horses were definitely exhausted by the end of our journey, but continued to respond fairly well to requests.

i really love this equestrian center and if you want to learn how to ride there are many many…read moredifferent classes to suit all ages and abilities. they even have a novice class for adults like me and an indoor arena so as nobody can see me if i wobble or fall off at the canter! there is ponyplay on mondays for children around 8 and over, ponyclub for 4 to 8 year olds to get them used to being around ponies. the ponyplay includes management and learning about how to put on a bridle, saddle, about the different types of horses etc so very educational and fun!

Out in the cold on a bright February morning is no place for a woman of creature comforts like…read moremyself, but I'm willing to make an exception if that morning is spent at this excellent equestrian centre. Spacious, well maintained and with in-and-outdoor riding rings, this is the place to go for introductions, refreshers or Olympic-grade riding lessons. Each grouping is managed well by centre staff and experienced students -watching a group of under-tens take their first few trots around an indoor ring, I was delighted by the positive encouragement of the instructor (and the high level of safety -lead holders for every horse waiting to help, protective vests and helmets all around... I don't remember all that in my horse camps!). Prices for adult instruction hover around the €30 mark. €32 for an assessment and a prepay 12 lesson package comes to about €27 per session. Kids Pony Play 40 minute sessions are just €20 and can be scheduled lesson by lesson - a great way to get a kid in the saddle without committing to more sessions than they might want. The centre isn't just for instruction though, and a brisk trade in horse-themed parties, day camps, shows and other horse-related activities. The community that's grown up around the venue is positively encouraged with canteen and cafe facilities, outdoor areas for picnics, plus an open and spotless livery barn where horses and ponies are stabled between riding sessions (and always appreciative of a well-mannered hello and gift of apples or hay). In better weather I'll be up here with boots and helmet on, till then I'll huddle on the sidelines!
