Aquariums allow us to bring a little bit of that world into our homes. Having grown up with several aquariums, both fresh and saltwater, I've always appreciated what an aquarium can do for a room (doesn't hurt that I studied marine science in college either). There aren't too many dedicated saltwater aquarium shops in the area so I was excited to check out the Salty Dog. As soon as I walked in, I noticed the reef tank that is beautifully stocked and lit. For anyone who appreciates fish and corals, this place proves itself to be the real deal right from the start. Further into the store, you'll see several tanks with fish and some tanks containing corals and coral fragments. Everything I saw looked to be great quality and very healthy. This isn't your local PetCo where you see some dead fish floating in the tanks. Despite the great location and exceptionally high quality product, the best thing I found with The Salty Dog is the knowledge of the two owners, Adam and Kyle. These guys were both there and I had the opportunity to chat with them for about an hour. It's clear that they both love what they do and want everyone to have a great experience with their aquariums. Adam provided me with a print out that went step-by-step through the process of setting up a saltwater tank. Part of that process requires you to bring a water sample to The Salty Dog to be tested by them before they'll even allow you to buy any livestock. On top of that, they told me they guarantee their fish for about 24 hours! I really enjoyed my trip to The Salty Dog and I look forward to setting up my next tank. Adam and Kyle are great to work with and I'd recommend taking a few minutes to chat with them if you ever stop by. Their knowledge and love for their craft is instantly recognizable. The rosamond gifford zoo also has elephants and penguins but it never reeks of poop and a fish market when we visit there. The gift shop was also small and cramped. The indoor exhibits weren't entertaining or informative either. I would say the only positive would be the outdoor playground. It was great and beautiful compared to the rest of the zoo.

This place reminded me of the Exploratorium in San Francisco, , except instead of interactive exhibits highlighting scientific principles, these interactive exhibits were all about play! Play for both the kids, and the grown-ups. They had a ropes course for the younger kids, and another one for older kids and the grown-ups. For the kids, they had a scale model of a local grocery chain, where the kids could either "work", or "shop", right down to the working checkout lanes. They had a Sesame Street exhibit...., A butterfly habitat, and and All kinds of different indoor and outdoor play areas. I can still hula hoop! (for a whole five seconds...). They also had all of the exhibits on toys, games, and video games. This is the home of the national toy, Hall of Fame, and the national video game Hall of Fame. it was so cool seeing toys from my childhood, and a wide range of video games and pinball machine machines that are playable. The price to get in is very reasonable, and they also offer a military/veterans discount, and memberships to the museum, which offer free museum admission. There is a parking garage attached to the museum, with a small charge for parking, and there is a also a small charge for the ropes course, the butterfly habitat, or to play the video games/pinball machines. One day they told me an animal can't be held for pickup. The next time they said they'd write NFS on it and wait for the manager to call back. The animal sold in the meantime. 2. I have left an in-person call-back number twice now because the manager would not pick up their phone when I had a specialty question. I have gotten no communication. 3. The voicemail of the store to accept messages. There's not a posted email, you cannot message the store on FB, and the answering machine is full. There's no way to get a hold of the business. I love shopping local but management like this is going to push me to online ordering from cheaper places that actually respond.
