We were in town for a concert and to meet up with some friends and it happened to be "Free Comic Book Day" and we had time to kill, so we stopped at some local shops including the Deep at their new location. They had all the goodies for giveaways-- who can beat 3 free comics plus another 5 freebies if you make a purchase? The companies (Marvel, DC, and the indies) made a good show of rolling out freebies to give readers a sample of current offerings and hopefully they roped in some new readers. It was nice to see The Deep still has a swath of back issues, I was able to cross several titles off my never-ending search list as I poked around the store. They still have a wall of new releases, a ton of games and figures, etc. It was also very cool to see such a wide diversity of readership, people of all ages and backgrounds grabbing up new releases and picking up pull lists. Not sure if ownership has changed in the past decade or more or if it's more to do with the changing vibes of the subculture itself becoming more mainstream and accessible, but it just felt overall more "welcoming" and open than ever before so that anyone can find the book they're looking for and get into comics. Very cool. Plenty of parking. Appreciated the additional 20% off of purchases for the comic book day, and back issue prices are fair--more expensive than some, far cheaper than others.

While waiting on the birthday girl I went in the store to look around. No other customers were there, and when asked if I needed help I mentioned I was meeting my grandaughter to build a bear in a bit. This was at 5:40pm. No one mentioned that they close at 7 and stop making bears at 6:45. We ate at the food court. While eating, the birthday girls daddy walked over to the store and noticed it closes at 7pm. We all rushed over and arrived at 6:46. They told us that we were too late to make a bear. They stop taking orders at 6:45. We were 1 minute late! We were told they would not make an exception because if they made an exception for 1 person they would have to do it for everyone. I looked up and I saw tears rolling down my daughters eyes it broke my heart! So 5 year old birthday girl and her mom were both crying. We left so sad and disappointed What was supposed to be a fun celebration turned into a very sad evening. Creating a birthday bear was a huge thing to my grandaughter. She was so excited! These 2 employees made no effort to help us out and exhibited no empathy whatsoever. We were 1 minute late! That rule was not posted anywhere! Although some items can be fairly expensive, they are of good, local quality. They have wood block prints, artwork, jewelry, books, T-shirts, ornaments, and other items with the well-known sites of Huntsville (Big Spring Park, Saturn V, etc.). They also have some food items like honey and jelly. There is also a kid section with books, toys, pens, etc. In one area of the store, there is a little museum type set-up with newspapers and other historical things from Huntsville's history. The staff is typically pretty nice and very eager to help you shop / locate items.

It's basically now a gift and craft shop selling souvenirs, local food/snacks, and local artisan crafts. The staff is super nice, and when we said it was our first time visiting they told us all about the history of the building. Most of the furnishings inside are original including the floors, shelving, cash register and an elevator shaft! This place was so cool and is definitely a must visit in downtown Huntsville!
