The Deep (at their previous location) was my weekly comic shop when I lived in Huntsville 20 years ago (groan). We were in town for a concert and to meet up with some friends and it happened to be "Free Comic Book Day" and we had time to kill, so we stopped at some local shops including the Deep at their new location. They had all the goodies for giveaways-- who can beat 3 free comics plus another 5 freebies if you make a purchase? The companies (Marvel, DC, and the indies) made a good show of rolling out freebies to give readers a sample of current offerings and hopefully they roped in some new readers. It was nice to see The Deep still has a swath of back issues, I was able to cross several titles off my never-ending search list as I poked around the store. They still have a wall of new releases, a ton of games and figures, etc. It was also very cool to see such a wide diversity of readership, people of all ages and backgrounds grabbing up new releases and picking up pull lists. Not sure if ownership has changed in the past decade or more or if it's more to do with the changing vibes of the subculture itself becoming more mainstream and accessible, but it just felt overall more "welcoming" and open than ever before so that anyone can find the book they're looking for and get into comics. Very cool. Plenty of parking. Appreciated the additional 20% off of purchases for the comic book day, and back issue prices are fair--more expensive than some, far cheaper than others. read more

The OG gaming store in Huntsville. While not the biggest place, it definitely has the biggest collection of comic books I think. You can also rent the upstairs for events. We actually hosted week for a friend there. Definitely valuable establishment to the gaming community. read more

I have been shopping here for 20 years and today will be the last day. In the past, The Deep would honor "msrp" for their products, especially if you pre ordered. As of today, they are full blown market price plus a little extra. Don't shop here, let their product rot on the shelves at the prices they're charging. I feel so personally about this because my 20 years of business isn't worth as much as the extra few hundred they might get from people who likely won't return to the store. read more

We stopped in The Deep Comics & Games while in Huntsville for a show. The place is pretty unassuming from the outside, but once we entered we were impressed by the size of it, and especially with the variety of merchandise they have. They offer a wide selection of comics, board games, card games, TTRPG's and supplies. We're avid D&D fans and my wife also paints and sells minis. We found their prices to be reasonable so we picked up a few minis we've been looking for and she stocked up on paints and brushes. I used to collect comics so I checked out their selection. I was really impressed with how many classic comics they have in stock. If you're a collector, this is the place for you. Check out The Deep if you're in the Huntsville area. I like this place, though I'm not really the target demographic. I was drug here by better half, who needed some boxes for his precious comic book collection. (They actually didn't have those boxes in stock, but had a reasonable alternative.) He was super happy with their selection of older comics (which apparently has been refreshed and expanded in the last year or so), I was enthralled by their massive selection of board games because that's more my thing. Service is what you make of it here, and I don't mean that in a bad way. When we had questions, the staff was super friendly and helpful. When I just wanted to, glassy eyed, stare at games I hadn't heard of and contemplate if I wanted to splurge on them, they left me alone to browse. Prices are reasonable-ish as it's a niche market so they can price things accordingly, there's ample parking, it's a fairly large spot. read more

The Deep is a hidden gem for all your hobby needs. They have everything from trading cards, comics, figures, play mats to also have their own TCG area upstairs. I personally found this place to help me feel like I'm back in Los Angeles. Just a bunch of people who love super heroes and Pokémon. Everything is reasonably priced and very clean inside. Parking is available right outside, enough parking for many guests. I recommend you bring sneakers instead of my ugg boots since I got stuck inside due to a supposedly light rain that turned into a storm. Good job Mayra! Hahahah. read more

What a neat store! Its large and offers a multitude of varies gaming options. This place was hopping! I was surprised that it was mostly adults pursuing the store! It has a plethora of comic books, board games, figurines, and game cards! I did not go upstairs, but noted they had an entire floor dedicated for folks to interact with other gamers. Real life nerds all in one place. Not all nerds live in their grandmas basement! Some actually come up for air. Guess I'm an air breather. Hehe! The staff was super helpful and some were even dressed in outfits that resembled characters from online games. Whenever I'm somewhere new I do my best to check out the comic shop(s). What I found here was amazing. The trend or maybe the idea that you have to be a gamers, and comic store in one to survive as a brick and mortar these days is 100% on display here. I personally love having to find what I'm looking for in a shop...it's like your own quest. Just the right amount of organization. If you're in Huntsville, check this place out. You will not be disappointed, just make sure you block enough time in your day to get lost inside. For those who say they're expensive...they're a bit on the high side for the popular stuff, but no more so than the mall. Keep in mind they have overhead. Employees were very kind. Store was clean Something for everyone in the land of geekdom. They are behind the big building on memorial, looks new at the time of writing this. They kinda got screwed, they are there where the GPS says, tucked away on the side road. Next time I'm in town I'll be sure to visit again. read more

My first trip to a game store since I was in Salt Lake City. This place is freaking huge. The board games occupy a few aisles up in the front, with some specialty items throughout the store. Lots of comics, but that is no longer my bag, so I will leave it. Why visit? I was at a geek conference (DevSpace 2018) and we usually pull out board games. The big one in our local Nashville group (Meeples and Ale - Tailgate Brewery every other Monday - minor shout out?), at least right now, is Thanos Rising. So I picked up a copy at a better price than on Amazon. To be honest, I was not expecting anything this large. I only spent a few minutes roaming around, but I could easily spend hours if I had times. tons of everything. Sits in a freestanding building just off the highway, which I have passed at times in the past. I would never have noticed it if I had not called to confirm the copy of the game there. To be honest, I am probably better off I did not have more time, as I am sure I would have spent more money on a few more games. I did ask about Root, which was the big GenCon game this year. They did not have a copy, so I saved some money. :D read more

As a board game enthusiast, I was really excited to find a store like The Deep that specializes in all things nerdy. The store is pretty massive and if the large packed parking lot is any indication, it's also very popular. With games, comics, collectibles, candy and soda, as well as a large area for game play, I can totally see spending the better part of a day there. Their prices were also honestly pretty comparable to Amazon for most things, and there's something to be said about being able to see and touch before you buy. Staff was friendly enough for how busy they were and even helped my husband with some ideas for his D&D gameplay. It's definitely a cool store to walk around in. read more

Be still my beating heart! What a delightful surprise to find this gem in this fairly quiet region. Not since my old stomping grounds in NYC have I seen such a beautiful selection of back-issues. Back issues are priced slightly higher than is comfortable, but it is what it is. They offer a wide array of table top and board games, enough variety to pique most anyone's interest. Husband and I are eagerly awaiting when the kids can join in the fun and we can do proper game nights. I did spot (what feels like an elusive) "Stuffed Fables" on their shelves, a cute concept of a little girl's dolls coming to life to protect her. Fun fact, go to the SF website and you should be able to find a link to a "lost story" for free! Lots of DnD minifigs and varying scenery setters, and next to those are game books, maps and astonishingly enough CARTS! Came in handy when picking up more than we should have, and also popping in the kids once they used up all their patience with mom and dad. I have it on good authority that you should stop by the bathroom here, apparently they took a concept and ran with it. I have yet to take a trip to tinkle town while here, but expect photos when/if that happens. I went over back issues but forgot to mention their new and current wall, it was such a dream to see not only the tried and true 'mainstream' titles, but also so many 'indie' publications. Oni Press FTW! It wasn't until I moved away from my beloved city that I discovered the lack of indie material being given a chance. Still, can't blame those smaller stores, a sure thing is a sure thing. Also a healthy trades section! Everything is alphabetical, no division of publishers. Hallelujah. Look to the right of the wall of new comics, there'll be a smaller shelf with some books geared towards the younger readers. Almost missed them because they stock with the spines facing out, and as those are thin it was hard to see. Luckily I'm nosy. Maybe they can place a couple with the covers facing out, more enticing. Lovey lady behind the counter backordered an issue that I just missed out on. She informed me that I could sub to trades, which are now my preferred method of collecting. There is an upstairs that is open to the public with a number of gaming tables. Tuesdays are Star Wars days, mostly starts with x-wing then turns into just SW from what we were told. They do offer a Military Discount, so be sure to ask. And I overheard they do discounts on "frequent flyers" with board games. Found out at checkout that all Citadel paint was 20% off. Great. Huge store with a large selection of comics, games, toys, etc. The large section of older comics in the middle of the store was VERY organized! I appreciated that - it was really easy to find stuff. I went into the store and pre-ordered a new item coming out and was told my place was secured, my information was down and I was 4th in place. Week later I go in to check in, somehow my place was given away without my knowledge or consent and I was magically 5th in place (they only got 4). Watch out for Nathan, seems to take care of friends first. Will not shop here again. Would not recommend anyone pre-order with them. read more

Incredibly rude customer service. While shopping for Magic cards to make a new EDH deck one of the employees endlessly ridiculed me and told me that, "... if [I'm] just going to half-ass my hobbies [I] might as well not play at all. You're probably the kind of person who doesn't pay attention while driving and is gonna run your car off the road." I only mention that level of detail to drive home the point that this actually happened. This is made worse by the fact that another employee sat there and made no move to do anything. I haven't shopped at the Deep since and can't in good conscience recommend them to anyone. read more

Massive comic book store. One of the large ones you'll find. Definately a good source of anime and manga comics. Also serve up rental anime videos to the locals (sorry, no out of county rentals allowed.) Also a good collections of anime figurines, as well as comic book figurines. Found the customer service rude when asking for a fair price on a comic The Comic was selling for 7 on EBay and they had 3 copies at 15 each. Just bought over 100 dollars worth of comics. Well I bought the comic on EBay, should have just left at that point. But I will never return. If I just bought 30 comics and I only ask to come down on one. At least the other comic shops in the area between Huntsville and Birmingham are fair and I spend my money there. read more

Classic comic shop. A Huntsville treasure for years. They carry old and new comics, graphic novels, models, figurines, collectibles and cards. Its a perfect place to browse for a few hours and shop for friends and family. The staff here is very helpful and pleasant. They offer game nights and afternoons. This place seems to be in a pretty shady part of town, but it's really worth a stop for collectors and gamers alike. Prices on old and new collectibles are very fair, and they have a LOT of cool stuff. TONS of comics, and a great selection of action figures and statues. They also have a huge selection of tabletop games, and appear to have a ton of MTG cards. Upstairs had a lot of people playing Magic at the release of Shadows Over Innistrad event. This place is huge! Big selection of board games, comics, figures, Warhammer 40k, etc. Pricing on new stuff appears to be at MSRP, which is the reality for most friendly local game stores. Definitely worth a look, and worth a purchase too, to support local business. My interests primarily lie in board games, so I can say that the selection is a pretty decent mix of the perennial big sellers (Munchkin, Red Dragon Inn, Pandemic, Catan) and an assortment of all kinds of other stuff. I even found a few there that are/were between print runs, if not out of print. Definitely worth a look! read more

They have literally THOUSANDS of back issues, an incredible selection of bargain comics, nearly all the current series (plus variant covers), and a ridiculous selection of collectibles dealing with all things geek. I called with a comic collection to sell (7 long boxes, 5 short), told the person who was in charge of buying my asking price and was told to bring them in any day before 5pm. I took them that day. The buyer looked through them and offered me less than 1/12th my asking price, informing me they were low grade comics. After leaving I contacted another comic seller, who also looked through them. He pulled around 20 key issues and told me he could easily meet my asking price, and left me 2 long boxes of comics he didn't deal in. I was unimpressed with the extremely low offer and being told I had Low grade comics, when the next seller I go to makes me an offer that is my asking price and leaves me two boxes for myself. I know businesses have to make money, but an offer of less than 1/12th of what another re-seller pays is ridiculous. Not only did I waste my time and gas, but the experience made me question the actual value of my collection. read more

I came in looking to buy some Magic cards for my daughter which is just starting to play. I came in knowing know nothing at all about the game. I explained my need to Kevin, and received an excellent response. Kevin answered my questions with clear enthusiasm for the game, and struck me as really knowledgable. He could easily have directed me into buying a lot more than I needed. Instead, he told me what would be really helpful, what would be too confusing or complicated, and WHY it is so, which helped me feel that I can fully trust his suggestions. I did, and I am happy. This place is awesome!!! I travel a lot around the country to big cities and around the world. So to say this place is awesome is an understatement. Ed, the owner, along with his staff are extremely knowledgeable and friendly. They moved to a much larger store with two stories to bring everything you are looking for in one place. Being a comic collector I can't comment much on the gaming, anime, toy or other areas this store stocks, but they have a huge selection to choose from. I just like to look at those items. For comics; you can get your latest fix on any series; new or back issue. I have been collecting comics for over 38 years and this store is the best within a few hundred miles. They are not one of those huge comic stores that don't really want to sell you a key issue. The really huge "corporate" stores want to set ridiculous prices on their back issues. Also, with this store grading is extremely accurate. They have ensured that I have not missed a single issue, variant or print for the past eight years that I have been a subscriber. Again, with me traveling a lot I have piece of mind that I can count on them to continue to ensure I never miss an issue. You can have local pick up or have your comics mailed to you. Plus you get discounts for being on their list. This place is extremely well organized and they can locate any back issue you desire in a few moments. Not like your average "comic store" that is actually a gaming store that sells comics on the side and doesn't take care of them. No, this place takes pride in the appearance and organization of their products. If you don't see something you like, ask. They will get it on order for you or attempt to locate it. Drum up a conversation about your collecting or gaming habits and you will be surprised of their enthusiasm. They really like what they do and it shows. If you are passing anywhere near Huntsville, you need to make this a stop on your way.
