We apparently were on the cusp of a museum reset, so some areas had already been closed off to the public as a result. When in the area again, we will def revisit the Chazen. The Chazen was a sublime way to spend part of my afternoon and I'm so envious of the students who attend school there--I would've killed to have had something like this on my campus as an undergraduate. There are three floors of art to digest; the first two are rotating exhibits so make sure to take it all in. Everything was so well lit and while spacious to accommodate all the art, it also feels nice and cozy inside. The third floor is the true gem though. That's where you'll find art throughout the ages; there is so much for the eyes to feast upon, and more notable names in art history. The best surprise for me was encountering several works by my favorite artist (Calder). To behold his mobile in the flesh is otherworldly and always moves me to tears. You cannot come to Madison and skip this museum without doing yourself a huge disservice. I'd haunt this place if I were a local. It's truly sublime.

It is a cute little shop with lots of different kinds of gifts ranging from spiritual, scents, books, decorations, jewelry and lots of crystals. The employees are very helpful and friendly. Each art show I have attended here has featured totally different artists, forms, and styles of art. Even the set up changes with the stage, tables, chairs, and couches being moved to reinvent the spaceand conform to different crowds. Expect a party and Madison folks from all walks of life coming together nicely for a fun night out together. When it comes to drinks you have two choices, Maria's and Parched Eagle, and both have their own area to retreat to if you want to escape the music and lounge. Maria's had lots of tables to hold a conversation at and a bunch if pinball tables keep you occupied between sets. The Parched Eagle has plenty of board games and is usually the quietest of the bunch.

Nice selection of aerosol paint cans, shirts for sale, vintage graffiti magazines to read, and a table to sit down and draw if you plan on staying for a while. James, the owner, is very knowledgeable and helpful. Customer service is great. Small shop with a small town feel. After a few visits they'll definitely remember you and you'll feel like one of the homies. The best part about the shop is that they have a side wall outside that gets repainted every five weeks or so. They also have several other art walls in the area for graffiti art murals. I loved a lot of the art that was featured by local artist Leslie Iwai, in particular her paper cutting and folding. There was a crowd around the typewriter so I didn't get to interact with that piece, but I hope to get back while she's exhibiting when there's a smaller crowd. Next time you're ambling down State Street stop in to the Overture and spend a few minutes at Watrous!
