Maryland Food Bank thrives off of weekend volunteer hours for packers in their conveyor belt area to box canned goods and boxed foods as they'd otherwise have to bill these hours to payroll. I enjoyed myself and even got in a little cardio as the belt moved more and more foodstuffs through. I was in charge of canned veggies and boy were there lots of them. It was a good time and I can't wait to go back!

This organization offers a wide range of programs for children of all ages. Most importantly they have programs for kids beyond treatment. For example, they offer support programs ranging from tutoring, art therapy, nutrition, oncology parent support groups. Cool Kids offer so many opportunities to engage with their members but also for members to interacted with each other. Majority of the kids in the program are immunocompromised so they must limit the number of interactions they can have so they don't fall ill. Cool Kids offers virtual event as well as in person ones. I really love this organization! The good people of the RRN distribute one-band radios to folks who have vision problems, like my…read moremother in law, who has macular denigration and is nearly completely blind. The RRN has volunteers who read newspapers,magazines and books over the radio, and provides 24/7 worth of programs. Some of the publications they read include the local paper - the Baltimore Sun, the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, tons of magazines like People, National Geographic, New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, the Economist - you name it. They even read aloud the newspaper inserts for grocery and department stores! A large print schedule is distributed weekly, and you can also call a toll-free number for a tape recording of the week's schedule. The RRN is also in many other major cities. Just google Radio Reading Network and the name of your city to find a location. Oh - and the service is $50 a year, or free for those who can't afford it.

I have been volunteering with the Maryland Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (MDVLA) for a few months…read more This organization provides pro bono legal services for individuals and organizations who are engaged in arts, music and entertainment. They live by their motto of "Left-Brain Support for Right-Brain People". They hold monthly clinics where volunteer lawyers provide support and referrals (with discounts) to individuals who wouldn't be able to access these services. There is a small fee for the clinic appointments. MDVLA also holds workshops for artists to learn how to protect their copyrights and ideas, which is a major challenge for artists and musicians. This is truly one of my favorite organizations to volunteer with as a law student. Not only do I get to help some incredible talented people, but I also learn a lot from the attorneys I have worked with and they have said they always learn something from the law students too.

Last Saturday, we visited the largest, permanent, model railroad display in the mid-Atlantic, owned…read moreby the Baltimore Society for Model Engineers. The Society was founded in March 1932 and is the oldest exclusively model railroad club in the United States. They maintain 2,500 square feet of model railroad displays of steam and diesel freight and passenger trains and trolleys, plus so much more. It was fun to see all the parts of the display - it really gives you a glimpse into the history of railroading. It is not easy to find, as the doorway is tucked into the left front center of the building and the society is located on the third floor with no elevator. The display is normally open on the second Sunday of each month, except May.
