This is a huge 18th century Mill Village that focused on education and the welfare of mill workers…read moreboth young and old, I loved the Annie McLeod ride which was fun but also very touching hearing the ghosts of mill workers and of 12 year old Annie McLeod talk about her life as a mill worker in 1820 in New Lanark and of the mill manager Robert Owen who also created the first Infant School in the world. I enjoyed visiting the historic classroom and writing on slates with chalk. You will also see an exhibition of cotton production and working conditions in the cotton industry and see the 19th century textiles machinery in action, spinning wool into yarn which is noisy. We didn't have time to visit Robert Owens home but we wandered the beautiful roof terrace with panoramic views of the falls of Clyde, so all in all a very pleasant day out and well worth a visit!

We visited yesterday on what was a brilliant sunny day and we were totally able to appreciate how pretty new lanark is and I can see why this is becoming a popular wedding venue. I didnt actually realise that the village is still very much a working mill and you can see that for yourself as you walk around. When you enter the car park there is a sign telling you its a 7 min walk to the visitor centre and its all downhill. There are some disabled spaces outside the visitor centre so worth keeping that in mind if you have mobility issues. The Annie Mcleod ride was just as i rememberd and the visitor centre is really well laid out. A lift takes you up to the roof garden where the views are simply stunning! We stopped off for lunch in the cafe and i was pleased to see some gluten free options available and the prices were really reasonable. The gift shop is attached to the cafe with some lovely items and this is where you can buy your wool. New Lanark is a great day out for all the family and dogs are welcome in the main grounds too.

It's absolutely stunning and so worth a visit.

Even the lower falls trail takes a bit of skill as its steep and slippery with no safe rail, but no amount of precautions can give you that sense of accomplishment when you see the falls pounding down ahead of you. It is so awe inspiring and breathtaking. Mind your step on the way up and back as the sheep were there first and their presents litter the walk way...

There is a small jail for holding until prisoners are moved on. The police are friendly enough and you see them in their car and on the odd occasion walking the streets. The police are very community orientated and have to be in a community like Strathaven. They do visits to the schools and various clubs doing different talks to the children including the 'don't talk to strangers' talk. Sometimes you phone the station and get no answer though!

The adult part is okay with a varity of fiction and non fiction. They do get new books in on a regular basis. They also stock reference material such as the witch guides. There are a few computers and if you are not computer literate the staff are very friendly and helpful. The library has it's own free car park and located in a building where rooms can be hired so on the odd occasion you might here some music as you walk into the library but it doesn't affect your visit.

A recent makeover of a derelict open-cast coal mine by local land artist Charles Jencks, this is a…read morefantastic place to walk the dog or just get some exercise (and you *will* get exercise - it's a 55-acre site!). Returning to his favourite themes of science and astronomy, and using his signature spirals, lagoons and mounds, Jencks has created several set pieces representing galaxies, comets and other astronomical events. The site is bisected by a long N-S avenue of megaliths aligned to the highest point, which is a pretty steep hike up the 'comet walk' but affords stunning 360-degree views over the surrounding countryside. You will need stout footwear and strong legs to make it up here - it is not for the unfit and is definitely not suitable for wheelchair users, although I did see one resolute parent wheeling a pushchair up to the highest point. Jencks has incorporated some 2,000 megaliths, which were unexpectedly excavated on site during the works, into each artwork, making it look like some Neolithic theme park gone mad in places; but it has a delightful exuberance about it that is impossible to resist. It only opened in June 2015 and in parts it seems to still be a 'work in progress'. They could do with improving the steeper sections of path with some steps, and parts of it look like they could do with some more turf being laid. But as the artist only lives 'down the road', I can foresee that he'll be tweaking this place for some years to come.

Excellent library that has provided me with many enjoyable books and information. The children's…read moresection has a large numbe of books, the adults section lss so but still a decent amount goin on. They have computers with internet access and a reference room with large numbers of books and microfiche files. The staff are all very friendly and helpful should you have an enquiry.
