This is a huge 18th century Mill Village that focused on education and the welfare of mill workers both young and old, I loved the Annie McLeod ride which was fun but also very touching hearing the ghosts of mill workers and of 12 year old Annie McLeod talk about her life as a mill worker in 1820 in New Lanark and of the mill manager Robert Owen who also created the first Infant School in the world. I enjoyed visiting the historic classroom and writing on slates with chalk. You will also see an exhibition of cotton production and working conditions in the cotton industry and see the 19th century textiles machinery in action, spinning wool into yarn which is noisy. We didn't have time to visit Robert Owens home but we wandered the beautiful roof terrace with panoramic views of the falls of Clyde, so all in all a very pleasant day out and well worth a visit! read more

I think every schoolchild in Glasgow has visited bew lanark at some point and I have to say i couldn't really remember that much from my visit myself apart from the Annie Mcleod experience! We visited yesterday on what was a brilliant sunny day and we were totally able to appreciate how pretty new lanark is and I can see why this is becoming a popular wedding venue. I didnt actually realise that the village is still very much a working mill and you can see that for yourself as you walk around. When you enter the car park there is a sign telling you its a 7 min walk to the visitor centre and its all downhill. There are some disabled spaces outside the visitor centre so worth keeping that in mind if you have mobility issues. The Annie Mcleod ride was just as i rememberd and the visitor centre is really well laid out. A lift takes you up to the roof garden where the views are simply stunning! We stopped off for lunch in the cafe and i was pleased to see some gluten free options available and the prices were really reasonable. The gift shop is attached to the cafe with some lovely items and this is where you can buy your wool. New Lanark is a great day out for all the family and dogs are welcome in the main grounds too. read more

The magic of Yelp presented itself to me just yesterday when I read a review of this place and decided it would be a good place to go.. so I did! Not been in here in quite some time and it brought back memories, whilst it was all brand new for my friend and her kid. There's alot to see and do here if you make the most of it and helps paint a picture of what life was like in the 1800's. The site is beautiful and vast and really spectacular during summertime. New Lanark World Heritage Site - From website - Landmarks & Historical Buildings Near Me - Lanark, SLK

This is a lovely site to visit. Sadly I did not go into the visitor centre for long, but still made use of the restaurant and mill shop. Currently Santa grotto is attracting lots of families. There also is hotel on site with a spa and in the restaurant they sell their infamous Lanark ice cream. The official car park is a bit further away from the village and there is a hill up and down to get there. You can also drive into the village, but car park is limited. I chose to go for a woodlands walk instead and the path did not disappoint. All I heard was the sound of streaming water from the river and turbulent splashing waterfalls. The path starts behind the village. There is a good sized children's playground with lots of fun activities. You can chose from several paths and it can take from 1hour or more to explore the woodlands. It's also an educational adventure as young and old can learn from the little notes besides trees how you would recognise this tree / plant. On way you will see ruins and waterfalls and wildlife. It's a very idyllic place. read more

There could be no other reward for this remarkable treasure. A World Heritage site, New Lanark is incredibly important when you read into the history of both the pace and the man credited with creating it, Robert Owen. The village itself is absolutely gorgeous, especially if you get it on a sunny day. Not just an actual village, but an educational experience as well, there's a visitor centre that has a ride system that tells you a potted version of the history, and then many floors below that that fill in the gaps that may have been left. How much you take in is up to you, but the 4th floor of the building with the still working loom and old style machines is incredible to watch. The history seeps through each brick in the majestic buildings. Bringing it up to modern standards, there's gift shops, cafes and even a hotel and gym in place to satisfy your need. Need to be one with nature? Walk up to the spectacular Falls Of Clyde along the river bank. I love this place, and it's a great tourist attraction for people of all ages and interests. If you're a local and haven't been, then get down to it. Car is recommended as it's a steep walk down to the village and back up, but there is a local bus that goes once an hour, service 135 from the bus interchange at Lanark Railway Station. It's worth the effort, trust me. read more

New Lanark is one of my favourite places in the whole world. 2016 is the bicentenary of this UNESCO World Hertiage Site and it's such a fantastic day out. It's a wee bit out of the road but the drive to get there covers some beautiful countryside. Now run entirely by a social enterprise Trust, New Lanark boasts attractions from the Annie McLeod experience - a theme park style ride which will bring back childhood memories for many- to the Mill Workers house, Robert Owen's House and the village shop and village school. The school is a gem with lots of work having gone in to restoring the environment - a brilliant place for school trips! There are lots of exhibits showing the history of New Lanark as a eutopian project as well as really rich and detailed information about the people who lived and worked there. Lots of New Lanark is accessible for people who use wheelchairs or have mobility challenges, those with prams and older people which is a great attraction for many visitors. There are gorgeous walks to be had to the very beginnings of the river Clyde with lots of opportunities to spot local wild life. There is also a brilliant cafe in the main buildings - it's really cheap with a selection from sandwiches, toasties and baked potatoes to hot meal of the day and soups. New Lanark even has it's own award winning ice cream! The afternoon tea is served in a special area from 1.30pm and is very cute. The mill shop sells produce from wool spun in the old mill is sold along a range of other Scottish products. The roof top garden is absolutely beautiful and the gallery room - New Lanark is really popular for weddings and it's easy to see why. The surroundings are spectacularly beautiful - it's possible to book out the whole youth hostel for group use (up to 65 people) and the New Lanark Mill hotel is of a really high standard with wedding and conferencing facilities including a small swimming pool and spa. read more

New Lanark is beautifully situated in a valley and the first view of the village when approaching from the car park is incredibly impressive. It is very well taken care of and I find it interesting that many of the buildings have been converted into flats - I'd love to see what they're like inside! The history of the village is incredibly interesting, but I found what I saw of the actual exhibits (the visitor center and the general store) sorely dated. I would have been interested in seeing the other exhibits but the steep entry price (something like £8/person) paired with tired looking manequins put me off. The walks from here, however, are spectacular. The main walk is along the Clyde where you can see some amazing waterfalls and a pretty cool looking old castle. There is also a hotel with a spa at New Lanark and The Man and I agree that a day doing the full circular Clyde walk followed by time in the spa sounds pretty good to us. read more

New Lanark brings back loads of lovely memories of my childhood when i visited it on several occasions and have done through my teenage and into my adult years. It is the go-to for school trips for every Primary in North and South Lanarkshire, and is perhaps best known as a wedding venue (there is a grand hotel in the grounds) It's one of Scotland's gems and a great day out, with loads to do and see. You could easily spend a day there and still have things you haven't seen. Perfect for a summer day out, and brilliant for kids. Older people tend to love it too as it takes them back to their school days and beyond. The site is vast, and includes the infamous Annie McCloud experience , which is a dark ride guided by the ghost of a mill worker girl, who tells tales of her hard life in the 1820's. This was always the highlight when we went with school, i will never forget the smells that evoked the memories of the mills and poverty that Annie spoke of. There is a historic classroom where children can dress up as schoolkids from the 1820's and be 'taught' by a strict schoolteacher. Other attractions include a working textile machine, millworkers houses and shop and a multi-sensory interactive playroom. Remember though, this is only one part of the site and activities stretch right over the acres of land, including beautiful rooftop gardens and the breath taking falls of Clyde. The website will provide a list of events that are taking place but if you haven't visited New Lanark then go soon, take the family for a brilliant day with lasting memories. read more
