It was a great opportunity to expose my children to this type of architecture, and explore the stations of the cross, talk about relics, and see their natural wonder at every major work of art-including the MANY stained glass windows! I was visiting the area from the Diocese of Fresno, and I attended this parish as a visitor…read more Recognizing that "they do things differently" there is not a sufficient criticism, there were a few things that made me doubt the orthodoxy of this parish. First, the design of the church. The seats had no kneelers, and nobody kneeled during the consecration. In addition, one of the first things I do when I enter a new church is to look for the tabernacle so that I can genuflect toward the reserved sacrament; it must have been there (it was a Catholic church, after all), but for the life of me I could never find it. My most serious concern was the behavior of the parish administrator during the mass, a religious sister, not a priest. The priest is in the place of Christ during the mass, and should be focus. This sister stood on the altar podium during the entire mass, drawing a second center of attention from the priest. She led most of the prayers from there. It felt like I was watching a tug-of-war between her and the priest. More disturbing, at one point she modified the words of the Roman Missal to make them more "inclusive" (and presumably more in line with her personal preferences). (She changed the prayer, "May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands .. and the good of all his holy Church" to "May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands ... and the good of all God's holy Church."). I understand what she was doing, and I'm sorry, but the words of the mass are not hers to change.

I didn't find them passive-aggressive at all - I found the "New Age" crowd more embodied that. For example, I can cry quietly during the service at Living God. However, at the local yoga places, they didn't want anyone to actually show a living emotion! It was so strange ... Christianity is thought of as repressive, and the yoga crown generally thought of as more "free," psychologically, but in my experience, it's been the opposite. Anyhow /endrant ... I very much enjoyed my experience at Living God and will be back. [heart] :)

The vendors claim full price, so no discount for the entry fee. I am a local, so those visiting-- stop blocking traffic and parking illegally! We are sick of you. Please use the shuttles. St. Sophia -- stop charging an entry fee and get you money from all the vendors making A LOT of money off being there. The best thing we've found -- authentic Gyro ( which you can get anytime at Blue Ribbon Diner) and the Loukemadas-- which I haven't found any place else. So unless you like crowds, overpriced items and iffy weather, please pass.

Parking was on a side street, but we didn't mind because of the pleasant weather. When we arrived, paid our $3 to get in and got through security (security at a festival? Huh?) we were ambushed by the crowds of people. We later saw a program that contained a map of the various things, but they didn't give us one when we entered and thus we were a bit lost. There were rooms inside with various crafts, jewelry, and religious trinkets. There was a guy selling oil paintings that ranged from beautiful to ugly. And, inside there were ladies selling Greek pastries (baklava, almond cookies, etc.) and another section selling "formal" food such as spanakopita, lamb, moussaka, etc. We stood in line for a couple of minutes before a kind soul told us that there were gyros in the tent out back. We snaked our way through the church and entered a tent that can only be described as cacophonous. There were kids dancing on a stage in Greek costumes. There was a band playing Greek music including flutes and stringed instruments. There was a beer area, a fried dough area, an ice cream area, a Lemonade area, a Greek salad area, and a long line for Gyros and Souvlaki. This was the food I was looking for! Despite getting in line during their dinner rush time, we had our food in about 15 minutes. They gyros were good, but had only onion (which I had them hold), tomato, meat and sauce. The pitas were extremely greasy from the lard they brushed on them. In the back, there were spits of preformed gyro meat going round and round. A Price Chopper truck off to the side served as supplier and storage for the various ingredients needed. Gyros were $8 each; fries were $3; drinks were $2; fried dough was $6 for three pounds worth with honey and sugar; desserts were between $2-4 each; etc. We enjoyed the food on the grass, because it was very hard to find an open table. In the back, we saw a bouncy-bounce area and someone was walking around with a goldfish so there were likely some games. Would we go back? Probably. The entire experience cost about as much as going to a Greek restaurant, and though it likely wasn't as good it was a fun time. I doubt we would go if it were raining.

This is a great conservative congregation…read more When my family arrived in the area, we weren't sure if we would be more comfortable joining a reform or conservative congregation. Back in Berkeley we were at a reform temple that used mostly Hebrew during worship, and was led by an old school Hungarian rabbi. The clergy at Ohav are fantastic. Loved Rabbi Dan. Love that the congregation shows off its egalitarian stripes with Rabbi Rena on the bima. Services were always kid friendly, from little toddlers all the way through fidgety grade schoolers. And we found it to be a warm and welcoming community. In the end, we decided our family was ultimately more comfortable being on the more religious side in a reform congregation, than the slackers in a conservative one. But this place still holds a warm spot in our heart, and it's an active and thriving part of the local Jewish community.
