Something must have happened with this company recently... it came highly recommended and has many good reviews. My son-in-law had the MOVE FROM HELL! He was quoted a 7 hour move that took almost 17 hours. The movers did not appear to know what they were doing. One example was trying to fit a couch through a door 3 times before they figured out that turning it around would make it go through. My daughter and son in law had to leave for work, so I stayed until they finished. Numerous things were damaged. Moving pads were used only to protect the banisters, but not any of the furniture, therefore the damage. Too much to list in the review. His bed was assembled inaccurately. They took it apart so the bed company has to come to correct it. Doors and railings were left off. There is miscellaneous hardware laying around. What does it belong to??? I could go on and on! It seemed as if one of the movers may have been high after the drive that took them 2 hours to get from point A to point B. Everyone else traveling back and forth made the trip in an hour or less. Owner of the company was not cooperative or helpful. Things got a little better when litigation was mentioned. A totally frustrating experience. We hire movers to avoid nightmares like this. read more

We hired Above Average Moving to help us get our stuff from a trailer up to our third-floor apartment in an old Victorian house. They were fantastic. Both guys were friendly and in good cheer and worked like machines. While they moved boxes, they strategized with us about how to get the bigger furniture pieces up the narrow staircase. They managed to fit a couch up the stairs that I honestly thought I'd have to donate. I was super happy with the care they took with our possessions and with the property we were moving into. They communicated well about where things needed to go, how we could help, and what might not make it inside (even though they got everything in). Their attitudes were a bonus on top of their great work. They even helped me reassemble my bed frame! In summary, they did quality work, went above and beyond, and made a stressful day better. I used Abover Average for a move from a one bedroom apartment in Middleton to a two bedroom apartment that was about 2 miles away. The two movers who did the work were on time and never took a break. They were just as excited to get the move over with as I was since they had another move to complete that same day. For big items they wrapped in padding or used the plastic wrap (e.g., couch, an older large screen TV). I over packed a few kitchen boxes but they moved those boxes without complaint. I did like that they could fit me in on my move date when other movers were booked or wanted to split my move between a pack and load on one day and then an unload on the next day. Above Average did an amazing job with our piano move earlier this year. As user photos show, they take excellent care in protecting your floors when moving by laying out the "red carpet." They knew which piano pieces were too delicate, and removed them before wrapping the piano for transport. I'm sure it's not the most fun to move a piano, and I'm sure AA moves plenty of pianos; however, the crew we worked with were incredibly friendly and professional. Great company! Terry was very responsive to my quote. We worked out a moving time that was beneficial to both of us, even though the move was only four days away from when I called. I wasn't sure I had three hours of moving; turns out, it was more!! He gave me a quote and told me how much I'd be charged for any time after the amount of time he estimated. I liked how they billed on the half hour instead of every hour. If I didn't need a whole hour, I would save a little money. :) Two friendly guys showed up on moving day, easily and carefully moved all my items out of my house and into their truck. I recently had a pretty chaotic moving situation, where I had very little time to get my (copious) amount of stuff to a new place. Terry responded to my Yelp message almost immediately, and was able to get to my place to help me move within only a few hours notice. Once there, I experienced very professional and friendly service. I asked for only an hour's worth of time (to help with only my bulkiest furniture items), and Above Average worked hard to meet my expectations, and even exceed them. I was most worried about damaging the walls and furniture on the way into the house (which had happened when my friends helped me the previous day), and I don't think the Above Average team even GRAZED a wall getting my things into the new place. I was hoping not to pay as much for an hour's worth of time, but I haven't done much research so I don't really have anything to compare the price to. The services I received were exceptional, and they told me up front exactly how much it was going to cost, so it wound up being worth the money. read more

Used them to move from Madison and Chicago to DC. Had a sub par experience. In loading at Madison, items that needed to be protected got packed. The exact plan for loading was not communicated. They could have elaborated the degree to which the house needed to be packed when taking the estimate. They were 3 hours late to the moving appointment in Chicago. They forgot to load a 5 foot plant in the loading dock in Chicago. They couldn't open the door of their truck in DC and thus waited for 90 minutes to find a bolt cutter to open the door. Also they damaged the base of a table with a marble table top table during the unloading. Finally, they overran their initial estimate by $1000. These overruns were justified because they claimed that the house was insufficiently ready to be packed. However the number of hours spent packing this house on their end remain the same from the estimate for the final charge, therefore this is not an adequate explanation of the cost overruns. I paid the excess from the estimate because I needed to be done with the moving, however I do feel cheated because Some of the explanations did not add up, and I do think that it is incompetent when someone has a moving truck whose door cannot be opened when needed. There was also a significant amount of pressure to pay right at the end of the move. For people who had all our addresses we should've been able to negotiate payment later. read more

I can't write a review of how well Above Average moved my daughter's possessions because They. Never. Showed. Up. Read that again. They. Never. Showed. Up. A crew was supposed to arrive beween 10 AM and 12 noon. When no one showed by 12:30, my daughter called. Terry and crew, according to the staffer, were "behind." At 2 PM, called again. Staffer said she'd contact Terry. My daughter called back again; staffer said Terry wasn't "returning her call." Daughter was supposed to be out of her flat by 4:30 PM. She called Gorilla Movers, who had previously said they were booked on her date/time, and within 2 minutes, had gotten a call from a crew who had finished early in Milwaukee and who would be at her flat in 1/2 hour. They arrived and moved everything in less than 2 hours. We couldn't have been more pleased. As per "Below Average" movers, all I can figure was that our job was too little for them and they blew it off. Additionally, they couldn't be bothered to keep us apprised of what was happening. My daughter had to initiate all contact. Avoid them. read more

They said they would arrive between 11am and 1pm - at 12:15pm, I called the office and they said "they have been trying to reach me to get the move going" - my phone had already been packed and boxed. Why would you need to contact us first, I hired them, told them where go..it was already set. This is the 3rd time I hired them, we never had any issues before, but these particular guys were unorganized, slow and complained about how much they hurt the entire day. We waited at the new house for almost 45 minutes for them to show up, they said they had the wrong address. They had one of the guys we had from a prior move (Tory - GREAT GUY) meet us at the new house to help the other two men unload the truck, and even HE was frustrated with how slow they were moving. They said they had a few moves before us and had another one to do after us. seems like an awful lot of moving for 2 men in one day. They quoted me $650.00 for a 5 hour move. Total was $910.00 for a 7 hour move, they did however take off 1/2 hour for "having the wrong address" for the new house. Kind of bummed with this one. read more

These guys were super accommodating and spot on reliable. I had purchased some vintage furniture from a private seller, these guys headed to her house to fetch the furniture, then to my house. They removed a couch from my basement, hauled a couch from the living room back downstairs, and brought the new furniture into the living room. They had it wrapped, handled it perfectly. And more importantly they were both super cool, we had a nice chat about art, they were very complimentary about my house, incredibly professional and super efficient. They did all the things you would expect- answer the phone, provide an accurate estimate, arrive on time, and move our stuff carefully. But then they did more, which made me think they are way above average. Taping down runners to protect floors, RUNNING back from the truck (when not carrying stuff), speeding up the process by a lot, offering very smart suggestions on grouping things in boxes, things I would have never thought of. Basically they showed that they are PROFESSIONAL movers, as opposed to some large guys who are strong but might not really know about moving. A+ move for us, way above average. read more

Above Average Moving helped us move my mother from her apartment to an assisted living community. We packed our own boxes, but they dis-assembled and padded furniture, etc. for us. They also provide large wardrobe boxes. The service was really outstanding. The process to get an estimate was simple, they arrived at 8:00am as promised, the guys really hustled to get the work done quickly. They were considerate in every way and took great care with everything. In the end, they finished more quickly than they their estimate. My 1-bedroom apartment move was done competently, but I'll avoid using them again. I'll start with the good . . . once they finally arrived, my movers were nice folks who clearly knew what they were doing. I had some minor damage to one item but they seemed to have worked very carefully in general. They were friendly and helpful. The move itself went pretty smoothly, so normally I'd only have good things to say. The bad . . . My largest issue is that the estimate was WAY off. As in, I paid double what I expected. Some of this was due to traffic and some other small things that were from my end, but even during the move, they kept underestimating when they'd actually be done. The movers themselves said that underquoting had been a problem with their office lately, so I think AA needs to adjust their metrics. Lowballing works short-term but not if you want repeat customers! The movers were also a half-hour late but didn't call and let me know. Calling the office number yielded nothing. I had no idea of knowing if they were going to no-show or not for a half-hour when time was already tight. Not very fun. It's a busy season for moving right now, so maybe they were just having a rough patch based on the other happy reviews, but I can't say I'll be going out of my way to try them out again. read more

Great experience with Above Average Moving today. Derek and John were RIGHT on time, not early nor late which I appreciated, they had all our stuff (family of 3) loaded up, moved out, AND put away at the new place in less than 5 hours. I was really impressed. They were just friendly enough, which is how I like it. Im sure they would've been open to chatting more, but they got right down to business and worked FAST and efficient - didn't take breaks and didn't $&!@ around. Goes without saying that they were careful with fragile items like glass fixtures and TVs - everything made it across town intact. The crew also worked well together and had good chemistry - which is important because they communicated well and even seemed like they were having fun, even though they worked their tails off. Big shout out to the office personnel too - Above Average was one of the few that responded promptly when I sent out initial quote requests, and all my follow up emails were answered in a couple of hours. As a bonus, their rates are slightly lower than their competitors I compared them with. As a happy new homeowner, YES I recommend these guys enthusiastically. read more

Now that we are settled in our new home, I want to report how happy we were with Above Average Moving. When I wrote to Terry a few weeks ago, he responded promptly, and throughout the following weeks answered all my questions without delay. On moving day last Friday, he and Tory adjusted their schedule at the last minute due to a work conflict my partner had. They arrived early afternoon, after doing another full move elsewhere, and stayed with us until 9:30 that night -- all the time working quickly, efficiently and cheerfully. We're retirement age, so that meant a lot of accumulated junk between us, but Terry and Tory never complained. They moved two truckloads of furniture, boxes and tools from one small house to another small house, but they were pros -- never left a scratch on the walls or floors. I hope to never have to move again, but if we do, we'll call Above Average. read more

I just used Above Average Moving when moving into my first townhouse. Terry was easy to talk to when we scheduled the move. He eased my mind about moving an expensive piece of gym equipment I have. They arrived at my place 5 minutes early. They got to work immediately. In fact, as I was discussing the logistics of the morning, they grabbed on to a dresser and started carrying it out! They were efficient, but not careless. They didn't scuff anything or break anything. They had great attitudes--and were extremely helpful. They made my move seem EASY! I would recommend them to anyone. The first sentence that comes out of my mouth when people ask how much move went has been, "My movers were awesome." I don't want to think about moving again any time soon, but if I ever do need to move, Terry will be getting a call from me. The price is reasonable. The experience unmatched. I had a horrific experience with Above Average Moving--a misnomer, since they really should be named Below Average Moving. They stood me up! I confirmed with Terry via email days in advance that he and his crew would arrive between 10:00 am and noon, and on the day of the move, also confirmed with their receptionist, Ramona, at around 12:30 pm that that was indeed the correct time. She said they were behind schedule, but Terry never called me to let me know. By 2:00 pm, I was very anxious, so called Ramona again, and she said that she had yet to hear from Terry. If a mover will be late, I at least expect a call to let me know. Above Average Moving didn't even bother to let me know what was happening; I initiated all contact. By 3:00 pm (I was supposed to be moved out by 4:30 pm, but clearly that was not possible at this point), I decided to be proactive and call another mover, Gorilla Movers, to see if they had availability. They had a crew that had finished early and could arrive within 30 minutes to an hour! They were my saviors and did an excellent job.
