I typically dread any healthcare related appointments, however his assistant Kendra was so kind and comforting when I spoke with her to schedule. I've seen Dr. Abramowitz a few times over the years. He takes as much time with you as you need and he is a good listener. He also tries to get to know you personally. I'm not sure what the negative reviews are all about regarding the receptionist....I have always found her to be very nice, attentive, and helpful on the phone. His receptionist is a joke, and he's not much better himself if he continues to allow this woman to run his office. All the bad reviews definitely check out and I wish I had checked before making him my primary care. Aside from being talked to very rudely and then hung up on by his receptionist, Dr Abramowitz isn't anything to marvel at either. The staff who answers the phone, specifically "Rebecca" is extremely unprofessional and rude. I don't expect this type of attitude when I'm calling a doctor's office. I couldn't believe it! In addition to that, this office is difficult to reach. When I call, I get a voicemail that tells me to call back during business hours even thought I'm calling within those hours, and not during lunch time. This review concerns the office staff and not Dr. Abramowitz personally as I have not had an opportunity to have an appointment with him. Called on August 5, 2019 to set an initial appointment with Dr. Abramowitz and spoke with Kelly. She confirmed Dr. Abramowitz was accepting new patients and also accepted my insurance Anthem Gold Select HMO but that Dr. Abramowitz name had to be listed on the card in order to set an appointment. I then went onto the Anthem website and selected Dr. Abramowitz as my PCP and spoke with an Anthem representative that indicated an online card would be generated in 48-72 hours listing Dr. Abramowitz as my PCP. I then called and spoke with Kelly again and informed her of the above and requested to make an appointment. Kelly stated that she could not make an appointment until Dr. Abramowitz was actually listed on my health insurance card. I reiterated Dr. Abramowitz would appear on my card in the next 48-72 hours and if I could make an appointment for a time period after Dr. Abramowitz's was listed on my card in 48-72 hours. Kelly then stated she would not permit me to make an initial appointment because that was office policy and I would have to call back to make an appointment when Dr. Abramowitz's name physically appeared on my health insurance card. Seriously? So now I have to unnecessarily wait an additional 2-3 business days to make an initial appointment because Dr. Abramowitz will not show on my health insurance card for 48-72 hours even though Dr. Abramowitz is showing as my PCP on the Anthem site and I have selected him as my PCP. I now regret electing Dr. Abramowitz as my PCP if this is the terrible first impression his staff is giving me of his office. read more

I need to lose weight and was looking for suggestions and also needed to have a simple exam to know how I am doing. Dr. Abramowitz is very kind and thorough. He answered questions and it turned out that my thyroid function is too low so I am going to get something to help with that. In addition he talked about living a healthy lifestyle with a healthy diet, sufficient exercise and working to reduce stress in my life. If you live in San Diego, please check him out. He is in Clairemont. Dr. Abramowitz is very knowledgable about wellness and healthy living in addition to being an excellent internal medicine doctor. I just visited Dr. Abramowitz and I was thoroughly impressed. I HATE doctors, doctor offices, ERs, dentist offices, pharmacies, and anything else to do with medical buildings. The people are arrogant and condescending and the wait times are ridiculous. This was NOT the case with Dr Abramowitz! I felt welcomed by the receptionist, the wait time was short, and the doctor spent a good amount of time with me, answering all my questions, getting a thorough history, and telling me about what to expect. I just broke my collar bone and needed to see Dr. Abramowitz to get a referral to an orthopedist. I was very hesitant seeing him (he was assigned to me by my health plan, I did not choose him), but I am very happy with him. Coming from Kaiser in northern California, seeing a doctor that spends time with you and actually wants to treat you is quite a new experience. He actually takes time to talk with you and understand your situation vs the typical 20min wait and then 20 second chat. I highly recommend this good Doctor. I've seen Dr. Abramowitz several times and have been very happy with him. After having been through several primary care physicians, I can say that Dr. Abramowitz has been the best on several accounts. His young appearance can be deceiving (he looks 20), yet he has a lot of experience and a very pragmatic approach to his diagnoses and treatments. Office wait times are minimal (I've never waited more than 10 minutes from my appt time before I see the Dr.) and his staff is friendly. Overall, he does a great job of explaining his diagnosis, the available options for treatment, his recommended treatment and why he recommends that particular treatment. read more

I saw Doctor Abramowitz about a year ago and tried to set my yearly checkup for this year. First, they have a voicemail answer telling you to call back during business hours. But when they give business hours in the recording it is well within the time I called. I tried leaving messages but they never called me back. This is a super frustrating and disrespectful process. I finally reached them today and the lady that answered had a bad attitude. I was trying to tell her my concerns with my medical needs but she didn't seem to be concerned. I asked for the doctor to look at a previous prescription and she was put off that I wanted to go above her. He is the "Doctor", right? Then I told her she wasn't kind and I didn't like speaking to her. I did not cus or raise my voice. She said she didn't like me either and HUNG UP on me! Given that this is the first endocrinologist I've had to see, I cannot compare Dr. A to anyone else. I will say that I would like more of an opportunity to voice my concerns without being sidebarred, or cut off, but this seems to be the norm with San Diego doctors. I will give him kudos for being open-minded about alternative treatment modalities that other docs may really sniff at. What I will say is that Mike M. was 100% correct that the front office girls are EXTREMELY rude, uncouth, and incompetent. Again, if you see my other reviews, I have had this experience with just about every doctors office I have visited in San Diego. I think it is just a West Coast thing (generalization intended, sorry!) Anyhow, on top of speaking to people in a condescending manner, they have jacked up on the billing a few times which ended in my husband having to argue our insurance company down. They have also gotten appointments crossed on a few occasions (i.e. told me it was on the 8th and actually put the 18th on the books), and then got angry when I pointed out the discrepancy. They also transposed my phone number, which resulted in me getting some very important lab results back 6 weeks late! When I mentioned this, they claimed they "left a message" and that I must not have gotten it, well, given that they had the wrong number, I'd say so! Anyhow, I am a firm believer in exemplary customer service. Dr. A should be more cognizant of who he has representing him in his front office. I took my mother to see Dr. Abramowitz. Although he appears to be very knowledgable about medicine, he could use a little lesson in humility. He had a terrible bedside manner. I can appreciate sarcasm in a comedy act but not when it comes to my mother with dementia. He spoke to her like she was deaf and a 2 year old. I am going to have my mother continue to see him in the hopes that he will understand that his patients are "people first." OMG!!!! This has to be the BEST office in all of San Diego! I called to get an appointment because I'm just not feeling well. A very nice woman named "Kelly" answered the phone on the 2nd ring. (wow) Since I'm a new patient she had to ask me a series of questions. I could hear the phones ringing in the back ground she asked very nicely if she could place me on hold and actually waited for my response before she did so. I was only on hold for like one second. A woman named Kendra picked up and said thank you so much for holding Kelly is checking in a patient do you mind if I finish setting up your appointment? (again she actually waited for my response) She was very nice as well. She was able to get me in to see the doctor that very afternoon!!!!!! When I got to the office Kelly's kind face matched her calm voice on the phone. They actually both greeted me by name and thanked me for arriving on time. It was like we all knew each other. They had some paperwork for me to fill out and while I did so they copied my insurance information. When I was finished with my paperwork I grabbed a great magazine (they have a nice selection, even my husband would like it, fishing and boating magazines) The Doctor (a handsome man) was standing at the entryway to the back office and took me to his exam room. He never left. I did not have to wait. He was kind, and seemed very concerned with my current problem. He spoke to me about non pharmaceutical treatments and prescription treatments. In the end we BOTH decided on how I would treat myself and my current condition. Truly, a one of a kind doctor! And office! On my way out both of the front office ladies said by and told me to call if I need anything. To top it off I got a call the next day from Kendra to see how I was feeling. I rarely see a physician who is so full of himself. He acts concerned but is quick to leave. I had a drug reaction and became very confused. I was in the hospital awaiting a cardiac catherization but the medication I was given must have caused a reaction and I left against my will. No one seems to understand and now I am treated like a villain that no one wants to help. I guess I am destined to die an outcast. I cannot help myself and I really hate this. I tried scheduling an appointment as I am new to this insurance and a new patient. I had an extremely unfortunate experience. After about the 5th ring someone finally picked up and said in a very unhappy tone, "there's a line ahead of you can I put you on hold?" I said this was okay. Someone picks up a few minute later and I tell them my situation and they said they can't get me in until the end of the month, I told them that won't work because I need a certain medication refilled and I can't be off of it that long. They put me on hold. After about 5 minutes someone picked up and they said "we'll see you shortly." I said, "pardon me?" And they hung up. At this point I was thinking "wow, I don't like this service, but I need my meds." Then another woman picked up and I had to reexplain my entire situation and I kept telling her, "yes, the last girl gave me that option and I told her it won't work, because I have a 9-5 job." My mother could hear me struggling and took the phone to ask what the protocol is for a situation like this. She then became EXTREMELY defensive and said there isn't any protocol for this situation. She went on to say things like, "it's not my problem you work", "you shouldn't have waited so long", "we will not tolerate a mother-daughter duo threatening us!" We said, "We are not threatening we just want to know what you typically do in a situation like this." She then said, "call the 1-800 number and request and new doctor because we will not be seeing you here." So ultimately, I was refused care. I have NEVER been spoken to like this by a healthcare professional before. It truly is sad, because we trust these people to keep us healthy and safe. Naturally, as a patient I expect a positive, sympathetic, and accommodating attitude. I am the daughter of a healthcare professional and he would never treat a patient this way or allow his subordinates to treat a patient this way. To conclude, I am more saddened by this experience than I am mad. To all of you that have had wonderful care from this practice, that is great and I hope people continue to get that care. However, this was too disheartening not to share and if there is another person searching for a new primary care physician out there, you should know this. I have not seen the Doctor so can't say anything about him, but his staff are very unprofessional and rude. My dad was in the ER and was told to see his doctor ASAP. His own doctor retired, so I chose Dr. Abramovtz for him. I called on Thursday to make an appointment for him, I was put on hold 3 times before someone finally said "let me have your name and number and I will call you back to make an appointment for you". I gave her the number, no one called back. On Monday I called, the same receptionist picked up. I told her that I was expecting a call back but no one called me, can I make and appointment please? She said hold on! She put me on hold again, no apologies or anything. After almost 10 min. I told my husband "it doesn't seem like the have very good customer service, not sure if I want my dad to go there" at this time she must've pick up the phone and said "I can give you 800# for your insurance". I thought she must've picked up the wrong line so I said "oh I am waiting to make an appointment..." she interrupted me and said "I know! I overheard you saying you don't like our service, so feel free to choose another doctor" REALLY?!!! What happened to customer service? To saying oh sorry we probably didn't get a chance to call you back. how can I help you? Doctor Abramovitz may be a great doctor but his staff need some customer service training and manners. I had an ok experience with the staff and the doctor, but my spouse was treated poorly. First, they rescheduled my spouses' original appointment due to an issue of their own--which was fine. When the appointment came, my spouse called to say she could not make it to her appointment (due to my being delayed at an appointment for one of our kids). The receptionist was rude, telling her that she was wasting the doctor's time and would have to supply a credit card number if she wanted to reschedule. My spouse explained that this was not typical of us, and that we would be happy to supply a card number since this situation was highly unlikely to happen again. She also reminded the receptionist that she had been flexible in rescheduling her appointment based on their office's needs. The receptionist showed no mercy and stated that this office would not be a good fit for my spouse. Like another reviewer mentioned (thanks, Malo), she told my spouse she could call the number on the back of her insurance card to find a different doctor. This cost the office the business of our entire family of five. Sadly, I am certain the doctor was never made aware of this. All I ever wanted from my primary care doctors was someone who was able to deal with basic health concerns and timely follow up on irregular labs/tests. This doctor took the time to go through my labs with me and find out exactly who I might not be losing weight and reasons for my high blood glucose levels. 6 months later, I am still losing weight and have better blood sugar numbers. We need more people like him here in San Diego and fewer of the needy opinionated uncaring part-timers who are only interested in prescribing you something you should not need had they been been doing their job properly in the first place by doing good follow up. Dr. Abramowitz and his office staff are very professional and compasionate. I was looking for a new prmary doctor and he came highly recommended by a close friend of mine. As a doctor, he listens and takes the time to come up with solutions to my health problems. His staff is always friendly and they know their job. I have not had any problems with getting referrals, renewing prescriptions, or getting answers any questions I might have about my care. They have even called me at home just to see if I am feeling better after recent a recent visit. You just don't see that level of concern these days in medical offices. When my husband had surgery for the first time in his life, Dr. Abramowitz's girls kept in touch with me throughout the entire ordeal. Just to make sure we were o.k. and didn't have any questions we needed answered. Their customer service and knowledge of the medical system is the highest I personally have experienced. I would also like to comment on the negative review posted by "Mike M". Mike, if you are such a hot shot MBA, why don't you give your full name or the name of one of the companies you claim to have started? I can't imagine either of the two ladies in the front office "assuming everyone they speak to is trash". I could imagine myself in their position having to listen to you boast about yourself and how many people you manage, etc. It would be agonizing to say the least. You may manage 190 people...but you have absolutely no social skills, and your manners are a joke. I feel sorry for the people that have to work for you, if they exist. How easy it must be for you to belittle and berate people that work hard to make an honest living by making juvenile comments about how they should be working at McDonalds, while hiding behind your computer. If all that was said to you was "you are rude" and hung up the phone-- she gets the patience award from me. I have been a patient of Dr. Abramowitz since he started his practice in San Diego many years ago. It is difficult now days to find a doctor caring enough to have a conversation with you. I trust his advise and appreciate how he takes the time to sit down, listen and discuss the treatments for whatever is ailing me. I have never had to wait more than 10 minutes to see him. The front office staff does a fine job and is very courteous. They make sure and call me as quickly as possible if I have concerns or questions about my treatment.
