Dr. Bortz is obviously passionate about his job, and draws from an incredible wealth of background and experience to give you all the information you need in a warm and friendly way. Since he's now on the concierge model he has more time to spend with each patient and really explore diagnostics and treatment options. I've know and had been treated by Dr. Bortz for several years. And for years, I shared in the belief that he was the 'shiznit' doctor to work with (in the San Diego area). I've always believed that Dr. Bortz was someone who was very bright, sincere in his service delivery, possessed excellent bedside manners, was driven to help his patients, and enjoyed a well connected network with the greater San Diego medical community. And in fact, I still hold many of these beliefs to heart. However, recently my whole perspective of the nature & scope of medical services managed out of this physician office has dramatically changed. This heart felt change commenced back in January of 2016, when I'd encountered an incredulous medical-service debacle that appear to have been both created and perpetuated by both Dr. Bortz AND his office staff. The issues I'd encountered are related to the staff not processing vital EDD paperwork that is the per view of this physician. And in proactively attempting to address this issue (well in advance of looming deadlines, etc.) I'd come to learn that the office staff had no intention to resolve the issues that were allegedly preventing the doctor from completing this task. Needless to say, when hard timelines for this clerical task passed, no adequate excuse has been provided to justify why this physician and/or his staff did not fulfill this time sensitive responsibility. Rather, excuses were made regarding the business offices inability to complete this task. When pushed on this issue, I was informed that, in fact, the doctor was not able to complete the (rather routine) task of submitting the form via the California EDD computer network because the office staff did not possess the correct account password for the doctor to log onto the EDD network!!!! And after sending them instructions on how to rectify this situation, .... they continue to claim that they can not coordinate the password reset with the doctor. Is this a case of the tail wagging the dog or what? (...... lol). To complicate matters, the staff then asked me to 'snail-mail' them a blank EDD Physician form so that it could be filled out by the staff, signed by the doctor, and mailed into EDD. Seriously. Who in their right mind thinks opting for snail-mail vs. using a state sanctioned computerized system to file EDD updates is the preferred choice (for the doctors signature) . However, after arranging for this form to be mailed to the office, I was informed by the staff they never received the form, and/or the doctor 'may have' removed the form from the mail stack and simply had failed to complete it .... (seriously ...?!?). Regardless of the specific details, I could not fathom the scale and simple ineptitude of the office staff (and by proxy this doctors) failed actions. Net effect: I've since learned that my EDD benefits had been cancelled due to this doctors failure to provide a timely report my medical status (pending a medical extension by a physician). Since, I've attempted multiple times to address this issue with the doctor directly (via unanswered phone messages). And to date I continue to experience an administrative 'firewall' nightmare with regard to addressing this issue. ;-( Always, someone in the office presents an excuse as to why the doctor did not call me back. Always, the administrative office staff have continued to provide questionable excuses for the current situation, which has only served to leave me feeling like there is no professional accountability at this shop (after dropping hard earned $, no less). At this point in time, I am on the hunt for a new primary physician. And as I start this new journey, I am closing the door on this shop of incompetence; and would recommend you consider my experience as you consider doing business here. For whatever the reason, something about this shop is not legit. And with the number of good physicians in the San Diego area, I would steer clear of this medical practitioner & his office staff. Given the cost for adequate medical services, we all deserve a physician who actually takes pride in the quality of his professional services; and the associated front office & back office services that inevitably follow. read more

This review is 2 yrs over due. Dr.Bortz's staff was very friendly, as well as Dr Bortz. However, I saw him for a total of 4 minutes... Seriously. A couple years back I wanted to drop some stubborn pounds and I heard Dr Bortz could help. I paid $60 office fee, he saw me for about 4 mins and he ok'd a prescription for phenterlyne (sp). When the MA did my vitals, my blood pressure was through the roof. She had mentioned that she didn't believe the Doctor would prescribe me anything for weight loss due to my BP. Boy, was she wrong. He really just glanced at my chart, checked my throat, etc had my prescription called in and said come back in 60 days I took my first pill the next day and I was zooooooming! I had stopped smoking but on these things I was about at a pack a day. I was irritable, moody, snappy, it was horrible! I had commented to my friend... Hell, I thought being overweight was bad for my health. I'm on these skinny pills, I'm about to give myself lung cancer and kill someone from the irritability- I was either hospital or jail bound -- my situation was worse than without the pills! About 8 packs of newports and 50 mood swings later ' time wise a week later, I went to see my regular physician and she was not happy. "What did you do? If you want to lose weight, then eat healthier and exercise! Your blood pressure is way too high , you could have a heart attack!" She couldn't believe a doctor prescribed these to me. I apologized for cheating on her with another doctor - you know it ended up just as cheating always does - bad for you... quick fix to a problem that needed long term work. Happy to say I eat better and exercise daily. Dr. Bortz is a nice guy but he probably shouldn't have prescribed me those meds based on my BP readings. read more

Half of our issues used to disappear during the visit since he had great bedside manners. And his diagnostics are to the point. Nice enough office. Pleasant staff. The doctor did listen and order immediate blood work and an EKG. So I didn't have the time to go over everything. The visit was rushed and I'm going to wait to finish up my list of symptoms when I return. I'm not usually the type to leave a review for a doctor, but I feel the need to because of how impressed I've been with Dr. Bortz service. It's a 20 minute drive for me but well worth it. He has genuinely listened to my concerns, done blood work and such when necessary, and doesn't brush things off as previous doctors I've seen have. His bedside manner is fantastic, he is very personable and easy to talk to and seems like he genuinely cares about your health. His office staff are also very professional and kind as well. I love the option to be able to make appointments online as well, it makes it very much more convenient to pick the date and time that works for you. I have been seeing Dr. Bortz for several years now, for just about every issue I have, and just for general check ups as well. He and his staff are extremely friendly, and go out of their way to take exceptional care of you. He is now a concierge Dr. He only takes a certain amount of patients per year. It costs $1800. Per year. I pay for my daughter to see him. If I could afford the entire family I would do it in a heartbeat. This man has has done wonders for my daughter who has chronic illnesses. We tried so many Dr.s that quite frankly didn't help. She now has a life and is thriving under his care. There is hope for any parent who has been through the struggles with children and despair because we are told we have to live with these diseases and we lose all hope. A true healer. Dr. Bortz was the best doctor I ever had; I only wish he could still be my doctor! Dr. Bortz joined a concierge medical plan that I just couldn't afford on top of my regular insurance premiums. I was looking for a new doctor in my area, and Dr Bortz was in my PPO network. When making appointment I was told that he was overseas and his assistant was available. I agreed, his assistant took care of me. She was very nice and knowledgeable. On my followup, Dr. Bortz himself was there to show me my lab results. He knew he wasn't there for the first appointment, so he apologized for not being there, which was a very nice gesture on his part. I know some doctors don't even bother showing up even if they are in the office as long as the assistants can take care of you. And then we talked about my health, he listened to my request for not prescribing medication for high cholesterol, and suggested natural alternatives. He even showed me some wikipedia entries about some of the alternatives online right there on his computer! During the discussion whenever he needed to make sure of something he just rushed outside to instruct his assistants to contact the lab and do further testing and/or ask question about the results. Per my test results I needed a shot which his nurse gave me right away. Followup shot will also be given on a walk-in without an appointment. During our 15-minute session I was impressed with his professionalism, care, and his passion to share his knowledge. I would definitely go see him again if I ever need a doctor. He doesn't waste time like my previous doctor, who was very nice but would make me wait in the room while chitchatting outside for 20 minutes. One minor complaint is that my appointment time was double-booked. Other person showed up literally 5 steps ahead of me, and she was taken in first. I hate waiting in the exam rooms, but I guess that's something I have to live with. BTW I haven't seen a dog anywhere, not even a sign of it. I'm really bummed. I really enjoyed my visits with Dr. Bortz, but my employer changed insurance companies and now he's out of network. I'm contemplating between finding a different doctor or just making up the difference (you have to pay up front and then get reimbursed). It would easily be worth it. Everything from setting up my appointment to the follow up from the doctor is top notch! I needed to be seen immediately and they are normally at least a week out. The receptionist provided some recommendations and scheduled me in for the first available which was about 4 days away. Then, she called the next day to check in with me and then found me an earlier appointment than my scheduled one. She clearly went above and beyond what she had to do and that meant the world to me because I was really sick (bronchitis). Dr. Bortz is a great doctor. I was looking for a doctor that could balance between prescribing medicine when it was necessary while not overdoing it and he does just that. I felt that he really listened to all my concerns/issues and that he really took the time to evaluate and attempt to understand everything that was going on. I did not feel rushed at all. He listened and then asked questions which led him to order blood tests that confirmed his suspicions. Dr. Bortz and his staff are perfect in my opinion. I'm a 50-something female in good general health. I've been in the healthcare field for 30 years and my grandfather was a surgeon/internist in San Diego for many years. Dr. Bortz is one of the few individual practitioners left here in town and my hope is that he can overcome the challenges of keeping a practice going in today's environment. In short, this guy has it all - a true passion for the health (physical, mental and emotional) and well-being of his patients, a solid foundation of medical knowledge that only comes with years of experience, a wonderful (if a little quirky, which I love) bedside manner and a competent, efficient and caring staff....what more could you ask for? I agree with Angie D's comment - he is a "doctor's doctor" - an excellent diagnostician who utilizes both western and alternative medicine concepts and treatments in his practice. I've seen him for the past four years or so and am so glad I was referred to him by one of his former staff. I have very high standards for the person who is driving my health train (I think they should be as good as my grandpa ;-). There are just too many other doctors in San Diego to choose from to settle for less than the best. To that point, I'll share that I live in Chula Vista and work in Mission Valley....I make the drive and arrange my schedule specifically so that I can utilize his extensive services....THAT's how good he is! I can typically get a same day or next day appointment. When he's not available (rarely), a competent PA is available and always adequate for my needs. He does use medical assistant interns from local vocational schools, however, their work is closely supervised. I view this practice as a great way to provide hands-on training to folks entering the work force - a true service to the community. Dr. Bortz provides a holistic approach to his patients and believe in a mind-body-spirit concept. He asks about my family members, what's going on at work and what my next project, vacation or other event is.....AND he remembers details from visit to visit!! I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Bortz, however scheduled it wrong in my own calendar. This simple mistake means that I'm banned, according to his receptionist, from ever seeing Dr. Bortz. I totally understand this policy, running a practice is difficult when patients do not show. However; this level of inflexibility with their policies (I would gladly have paid a missed appointment fee, but was not presented this option) makes me curious about what other things they are not flexible with, especially when dealing with my health. Apparently, this is a good practice, I will never know and perhaps that is for the best. Dr. Bortz contacted me to apologize and offered to reschedule me. The rationale for the initial refusal to see me was a rash of no-shows without a call that can interrupt business. He is going to review this policy in the future. I have already scheduled with another doctor, but will consider this practice again in the future. I'm changing my rating due to him contacting me and explaining the situation, which I appreciate, but I have not actually seen him. read more

Do NOT waste your time with this physician. To give you an indication of how sterile this office environment is, the doctor insists on keeping his dog in the doctor's office on a full time basis. When you show up, be aware, the very small dog (about 12 pounds) likes to snap at anyone buzzing by the always open door, including patients. I can't believe that any medical certification board would allow a doctor to keep a dog inside of not only the patients waiting rooms, but as well as the examination rooms. Thanks to Yelp, I was very fortunate to find Dr. Borst as my new primary care physician. It is always tough to find a true fit with doctors and it is one of the things I hate doing, but I was very happy to have found him. He is very personable with a pleasant bedside manner and general concern for your well being; he genuinely listened and took as much time as I needed. He also is very progressive in his methods. The only downside to my review is that my insurance will no longer be accepted January 1st, 2015. He makes you feel super comfortable, he is also super knowledgeable and explains your condition in detail, he even searched some information on his computer and had me read through it to make sure I understood my condition, I thought that was pretty nice. He is super thorough, makes sure to evaluate and test every possible scenario, so when you walk out you feel like you have been taken care of, instead of, well, what if he missed something, which I've felt in the past with other physicians. Here is a review from my boss - Dr. Bortz is a genius! I went to 30 different doctors over 7 years, many of them "specialist" in pain, surgery, or neurology, and tons of x-rays and 4 different MRI's all with no results and living with pain 24 hours a day, no sleep and just a miserable life of pain killers and NSAIDs that just cut the edge off the pain. No one listened, no one tried anything but the same things that were tried before over and over even though every piece of evidence proved there was no systemic issue with my knees. This was all before I started seeing Dr. Bortz., within 8 weeks he had cut my pain in half by trying Lyrica which was not new on the market, but no one else even thought to try it. Today, I don't take ANY pain killers at all, maybe a few Advil a day for minor aches and pains, and I live pain free, and both my physical and mental health is better than it was when I was 25. He is a great doctor, I would and have recommended him to my friends and family. read more

I have gone to Dr. Bortz for the last couple of years and have always been very happy with every aspect of the care that he has provided. I am writing this review not only because he has always been a caring physician but b/c of his exceptional staff. I can say with complete confidence that the ladies that assist him are top notch at everything they do and always have left me 100% happy. Leanne in particular has always made sure that I have been taken care of and I'm talking about going above and beyond. When I got a new insurance plan that I didn't understand Leanne walked me through the tedious process of making sure all my claim paper work was filed and that I wasn't getting taken advantage of. At one point I got an $1,800 bill from the insurance company that I brought in to Leanne who made some calls and I later got an updated bill in which I owed less then a $100. Most recently I needed my medical records and Leanne was made aware that I was in kind of a time pinch. She took control of the situation to the point that I just received a call from her 1 business day after we initially spoke and she let me know that my records where already done and ready. I was originally quoted a 4 week turn around time but when I needed there help they where there to help me out. I really believe that a caring, competent and professional Dr. is important and Dr. Bortz is all of these things. Dr. Bortz has always helped me to achieve my goals as far as my personal health concerns go. I have also come to really appreciate the office staff that works along side of Dr. Bortz and would honestly recommend Dr. Bortz and his staff to anyone of my friends or family. read more

I first saw Dr. Bortz Nov 2013 as a cash patient. I was very impressed for he is truly an "internist". He is a doctor's doctor. He was informative, patient and thorough. His staff was also wonderful. I had such a great experience I changed my insurance just so that I could become a regular patient. His office is super easy to find too, right off the 805. Oh boy....my new favorite doctor! I just saw Dr. Bortz today as a cash patient. I chose him because of all the positive reviews on Yelp, and I'm sure glad I did! I love how he tried really hard to make sure I got the proper treatment, without bustin the bank. His staff was super nice, and I felt like everyone was GENUINE and actually cared. He spent as much time as I needed, answered all my silly questions, and I didn't feel rushed once. SERIOUSLY, I have never had a better experience at a doctor's office. Plus he's funny. My husband, my son, and I were visiting my mother-in-law in San Diego the week of Thanksgiving. I realized I was sick on the plane, and by the time we landed I could barely breathe and my head was throbbing. We scanned yelp for some recommendations and we happened upon the excellent reviews for Dr. Bortz. My husband called and we were able to make an appointment for the next day. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Bortz and his excellent and helpful staff, particularly his office manager Laura. The doctor was extremely attentive and caring, even asking to and speaking with our pediatrician (I am breastfeeding) before he prescribed anything for me. Although not what I was in his office seeking treatment for, when Dr. Bortz learned of my history of migraines, he was more concerned with my symptoms, and offered me better treatment advice, than the neurologist who is treating me for them. When I got back to my home state almost a week after seeing Dr. Bortz, I started to experience symptoms again. I called his office and was given more excellent care by the doctor and his staff. Dr. Bortz even called in an extension on one of the medications he had earlier prescribed...to my pharmacy in my home state 1,800 miles from his office! Simply astounding service and care. Dr. Bortz is, without a doubt, the best physician I have ever had. I came to him with a series of issues that were being brushed off by other doctors, and found him in the nick of time. Dr. Bortz listened to my concerns, reviewed my labs with me, and explained what the results meant. Not only is he an extremely thorough internist, but he is also a genuinely caring, concerned person. He takes the time to find the best way to approach a problem, and educates the patient so they can take an active part in their recovery. 2 year patient. I have quite a few complaints but the big thing for me happened on my last consultation. He simply left the room to treat another patient, Even though we haven't finished. I was waiting for a while and then came out and asked the nurse if the doctor is coming back. She said that he started treating another patient and I can wait if I'd like. I left and switched to a different physician. I've never had a situation like that in my life. The consultation only lasted for 5-6 minutes and not only he didn't finish it, he didn't even notify me that he was done. read more
