It 'takes a village' to meet the many needs of loved ones facing social isolation and challenges around daily personal care and I have found that village in the supportive community at Savant Woodland Hills. Among the 18 memory care facilities I contacted in greater Los Angeles, Savant's dual commitment to both quality care and affordability was unmatched. From the first introductory meeting to my brother's move-in five weeks later, senior staff member Jeanette Hernandez provided kind and expert assistance at every stage. Six weeks have passed since my brother moved in and he is visibly more cheerful, peaceful, conversational and actively engaged with his world than he has been in months. And I am more relaxed, secure in the knowledge that he feels at home and safe in the midst of such a caring and supportive community and is receiving the 24/7 monitoring needed at this stage of his life. Thank you Savant Woodland Hills!

A family friend highly recommended Total Senior after having a great experience with them, so I reached out. After my very first phone call, when I explained our situation, I felt like I could finally breathe again. They guided me through every step of the process and truly held my hand while helping us find the right board and care home for my mom. Thanks to their support, we found a wonderful place less than five minutes from my house, which means we can visit her often. I'm incredibly grateful for their compassion, guidance, and expertise. Julie, Total Senior Advisor, took the time to truly listen, clearly explained the differences between assisted living and other options, and immediately knew what would be the best fit. Her compassion and patience helped my mom accept that she could no longer safely care for my dad on her own--something that felt impossible at the time. With Julie's guidance, we found an assisted living community within our budget where my dad is safe, supported, and has social interaction again. We are beyond grateful for Julie and Total Senior.

The owners often "ban" people if they are not the direct DPOA. The first day of admission, one of the owners was storming the facility yelling, "she's banned, get OUT" to another resident's service provider and I've heard of non DPOA family members being banned for petty things. So tread lightly... it's a tyrannical environment. 2. The inter-generational activity (pictured here) where elders get to spend time with children... happens about every 18 months when they need new residents. 3. Promote 24 hour observational care only offered 2 nights per week even after serious falls have occurred with resident hospitalization. 4. Lack of respect for anyone who is not the power of attorney. 5. One of the owners was an attorney by trade, is VERY litigious, and used the threat of filing lawsuits to suppress positive communication. Clarendon was managed well by the former owner who is a saint. The new owners bought the business a couple years ago. My advice: stick with a compassion driven (not greed motivated), women owned (who has a care taking history) board and care home. I guarantee you will get more than you bargain for and you won't deal with the stress of these businessmen who were never caretakers themselves.

My mother is currently at a board and care facility with advanced dementia and incontinance issues but they are doing a superior job at maintaining a clean living space. There has been a significant amount of staff turn over and I found it difficult to reach management. I see Allison responding to positive reviews but she never responded to any of the messages I left for her. Her voice mail was never set up and I had no idea how to reach her. I tried to settle my mother's final bill there and it was difficult to reach the business office. I received what was supposed to be my final bill but alas I received another one a few weeks later. When my mother first moved in, there were no up charging, but then they started to add extra charges every month. One month the bill was several hundred dollars more than it should be. I received an accounting and my mother was charged for dozens of meals she never ordered. Management fixed that bill but the helpful person who corrected it for me was gone the next month. It's been frustrating and I began to feel negatively about the experience.

We spent a long time searching for the right senior living community, and nothing ever felt quite right... until we found Ivy Park at Woodland Hills. From the moment I pulled up, I had a feeling. The landscaping is beautiful, the property is immaculate, and before I even walked inside, it already felt like home for my mom. I actually walked in unannounced and happened to meet Elizabeth Zaharian, the Regional Sales Specialist, who was there that day. She graciously took the time to show me around without an appointment. I saw two units that were clean, beautiful, and clearly well cared for. I was so impressed that I immediately drove to Thousand Oaks, picked up my mom from her previous community (which we were not happy with), and brought her back that same day. After one tour, we both knew this was it. Since then, everything has only reinforced that decision. The team is incredibly responsive texts, calls, emails are all handled quickly and professionally. Jennifer Smith helped us get settled and personally delivered a welcome amenity to my mom's room, even giving us her personal cell number in case we needed anything. The community itself feels almost brand new furniture, finishes, landscaping, everything is maintained at a very high level. It genuinely feels more like a luxury property than a typical senior living community. What surprised me the most and where most places fall short is the food. I've been in the restaurant business for over 30 years, so I don't say this lightly: the food here is excellent. Not "good for senior living" actually excellent. The ingredients, presentation, and flavor are all there. We've had multiple meals now, and every one has been impressive. Whoever is running that kitchen is a real chef not a glorified cook. Another thing that stood out is the leadership. The Executive Director, Lilit Mnatsakanyan, is clearly very hands-on. We saw her walking the dining room during both lunch and dinner, checking in with residents. We invited her to sit down with us for about 20 minutes after dinner. She's warm, present, and genuinely cares. You can tell this place runs well from the top down. The service overall is warm and personal. Staff remembered my name, and residents went out of their way to welcome my mom on her very first day. People seem genuinely happy here, which says a lot. We've seen several other communities, and I can say without hesitation this one stands above the rest. For what they offer, the value is actually surprising. Honestly, they could charge more. If you're looking for a place for a parent or loved one, don't overthink it. Go see it. Once you experience it, you'll understand. And this may sound crazy, but I'll say it anyway if I were looking for a place myself, I would absolutely consider living here. That's how wonderful it is.

Belmont is a great option if your family member is fairly healthy but just needs things like meals…read moreor basic cleaning managed. They have a large dining area (they can also deliver meals for $10 per delivery) and host a ton of outings and activities. The residents who can tend to the majority of their own needs seem very happy and enjoy the community and their friends. They even welcome pets for added comfort and the feel of home. They can schedule transportation to and from doctors visits and appointments. Many of the staff are wonderful. During the day, the team that manages the front desk are exceptional (Cristina especially!!!) They are kind and friendly. The teams truly care about the residents and it shows. Now here comes the HOWEVER and what earned the lower star rating: If you have a person who needs more care and cannot care for themselves, please think hard about Belmont and ask harder questions. Ask about PAL turnover and average tenure. It will be PAL availability that most impacts a resident. Our experience was wait over an hour to be assisted to the toilet, especially around meal times when PALS tend to be stretched thin transporting residents to and from meals. Ask to speak with the people who will directly interact with the resident from from desk to circle of care to overnight teams. The woman who works overnight at the front desk still brings tears to my mother's eyes. When I would call myself she would say things like "your mother calls all the time so she needs to understand nobody is coming right now. She needs to stop calling." When we complained about this person we were told that she "didn't mean it that way." I can only hope when the overnight receptionist is older, she never calls someone begging for help and have the person on the other end of the phone say that nobody is coming. Ask about the technology and ask to see the reports and the process documentation. Ask about hospital transport procedures. Ask WHEN a resident is taken, ask what information the health team will share when contacted by doctors. Get it in writing what information WILL be shared with doctors and ER teams to best treat your loved one. Ask for detailed care accounting. Get a clear understanding of how MUCH time the teams are having to spend with the resident to deliver the care you pay for. Also ask about their response time protocols. Ask about the consequences for not meeting that agreed upon timeline. Ask about scheduling minimums and how many PALS are on each floor for every shift. They DO always have the legally required staff count on duty at all times. That is NOT the same as having ENOUGH staff. Ask about bad reviews, notices around investigations or citations listed on California's Community Care Licensing Division that includes 5 years of certifications, inspections and infractions online. If any facility or individual is stonewalling or NOT answering issues head on..take that as a flag. Not saying this is the case here. In fact, I always found Nancy, Belmont's director, to be straight forward, honest and understanding. Nonetheless...look up the history of inspections and ASK if you see something that concerns you. Honestly, Belmont would have been ideal for us if we didn't need significant care. In the end this was a bad fit with significant questions around what we were sold and the reality of their capabilities and procedures. In the end we moved, and now receive 4x the care at a third of the cost with a smaller care facility that is less about the window dressing, activities and outings and more about availability of care. It was really easy to focus on the surface things because we wanted to picture mom happy. If you or your relative is truly independent and just needs a bit of help, I'd actually HIGHLY recommend Belmont. But if your elder resident needs care or serious assistance...ask the hardest questions and look WAY beyond the fresh flowers.
