Part of the Best Western conglomerate, I want to give this hotel a 4. But then I waffled (oh, ho ho...BELGIAN HUMOUR...geddit? *Waffle*d?) and gave it a 3. Probably it's worth a 3.5. Here's why:
I spent two nights here. My feelings are mixed, so here's the quick list:
Pros:
- there's a parrot named Coco who lives in the lobby and - if you're lucky - says "goodbye" when you leave for your day (NUMBER ONE PRO)
- the room I was in was very quiet despite being right in the centre of Brugge; I heard silence and church bells, both of which were perfectly dream-conducive
- guests of the hotel are eligible for discounts on certain local attractions (set museums, canal tours, etc.)
- wifi: reliable, easy to use (and appreciated on both fronts)
Cons:
- the room was extremely dark and slightly dank. I appreciate the hotel's attempts at energy conservation (dark-light halls lit up care of motion sensors) but the sensors were sometimes slow to react which meant I was discombobulated in a dark hallway / stairwell. Not my favourite feeling
- the pillows were awful. The decor of the hotel is almost Scandianavian in its minimalism (completely functional, but basic) and the pillows - despite trying every one in the room (I was nothing if not thorough) - all were awful foamy lumps
- maybe this is the urban dweller in me coming out, but: the luggage room was not safe at all; the room remained unlocked and it was easily accessible to anyone off the street. Adding to that: the reception desk was regularly left unattended. When I called the hotel once the staff member asked if I could call back in ten minutes (?) because she was down in the basement and not at the front desk. ZOINKS?
