I recently (February 19th) deposited a $10,000 check from AXA Financial (a loan from my 403B account). That was the day that I picked up the check, and since it was Presidents' Day, the bank was closed. Not wanting to carry a ten thousand dollar check in my purse until the end of school the next day, I deposited it into their ATM Monday afternoon. Today (two days later), I called customer service to see why even part of the check had not yet been released to my account. I was told that because I had had an overdrawn checking account several times in the past six moths, that they would not clear my check until March 1st. I said that was discriminatory and demanded to speak to someone more senior. Two hours later, the branch manager called me back and said that there was nothing they could do, since Bank of America wouldn't verify the check. I told them that my financial advisor at AXA would be calling them to verify that the check was good. I explained that I needed the money to pay off credit cards, catch up on student loans, and have savings since I was making less money at my current (safer) teaching job in St. Joseph MO (as opposed to Independence), and I had moved, and I paid my son's private school tuition at Oakhill (all of which they could tell from my banking statements). They said that it didn't matter and they were following federal guidelines based on my credit and account status. I told them that I had taken out the loan because of my financial situation. I further said that this is why working class people hate banks, and that I would be moving my money to a credit union as soon as possible, and that I would be posting this situation on social media and telling everyone I know not to bank at UMB. The branch manager didn't even let me finish and ended the call. I won't be able to touch MY money from MY 403B for ten days, because I have poor credit and have had an overdrawn bank account (because of being a single mom and teacher who went through a job change and move and pays her son's tuition).     Not from the area and specifically contacted the UMB website about cashing a check written by one…read moreof their customers. Was told online it wouldn't be a problem and there would be no fee. Went to the Gladstone branch, waiting in a long line for the ONE teller working a line of more than six people, until finally one of the four employees sitting at their desks finally decided to help out. Gave the teller the check, she then took another five minutes to "verify" the business held an account with them- which they did. Was then told that because the business wasn't open on a Monday I wouldn't be allowed to cash the check. Had I been informed that I might not be able to cash the check via their online HELP DESK, I could have saved myself a lot of time and heartache. When I told the cashier I had been told by their HELP DESK person I could cash the check at any branch, she rudely said- that's not the case. THEN TELL PEOPLE THAT WHEN THEY CALL YOUR HELP DESK! When I tried to contact the branch closest to the business customer to verify that this wasn't an anomaly because it was an out of town branch from the actual business, I couldn't even get a person at the branch. I was transferred to their customer service center which gave me the same number I just called and got them. Then I was given a number for a person's answering machine that was completely different from what customer service provided. Eventually I got a person, at the branch closest to the business who basically said... we might be able to cash it if you drive an hour out of your way to our branch, but we can't promise that will be the case! I was looking to set up an account in the area... it will never be with UMB!
