We really liked the lobster pot buoys and asked the manager if we could buy a few. He was really nice about it, but said "we would have nothing left if we sold our old buoys to everyone that asked, let me tell you about this store on the way out of town." The Blacksheep Trading Company.... They have a bit of everything it seems....tin signs, posters, pelts, and of course wood lobster traps and buoys. It was so cool talking with one of the owners Betsy who gave us a lot of history on the lobster buoys. So many great stories. They are located about 15 minutes outside of Bar Harbor and well worth a visit to browse their great selection.

I first came to US Bells four years ago and made a purchase of a large bell for about $350. It…read morestill hangs in our backyard and reminds me of Maine every time it rings. It is very pleasant sounding, and not overbearing to any neighbor. It's almost like a sea buoy when a storm passes through. We were again in the area for this year's trip and decided to make a return visit. The bells were all the same and pretty much nothing has changed. The store is about a 10x20 room more than half filled with all kinds of different sized bells. Most are singles, but they also have doubles and triples, too. Some of them look like mobiles. The clappers are not inside the bells, but outside usually made of mahogany wood or metal. The other part of the store has pottery for sale. This is a family run business which I'm always willing to help out if possible. On this trip, we were allowed to check out the foundry which was in a building right next door. It was amazing to see and feel the different sands used to make the molds, and if we were to have showed up a few hours earlier, we probably could have seen a brass pour. The counter person told us that the finish work once cooled is quite labor intensive which is why the bells are expensive. Today, I picked up a triple bell with a higher ringtone that will complement my big bell in my backyard. It was $135 and looks like the one in the photo above. An added bonus was that the day we visited was eclipse day, and we got to "see" the eclipse while at the store. Hopefully, we'll be back before 2024! I would highly recommend US Bells if you have a desire for something that not only can you appreciate it's design, but it's sound can remind you of Maine! Sight and sound!
