I went to this store because of their cute children's display in the window. I got my nieces a cute fuzzy octopus and lobster. The kids loved the gifts. The service was friendly and the people inside were very helpful and kind. Check out was easy to find. It's a great place to stop in if you are in the area for your home or souvenirs when visiting.

We really liked the lobster pot buoys and asked the manager if we could buy a few. He was really nice about it, but said "we would have nothing left if we sold our old buoys to everyone that asked, let me tell you about this store on the way out of town." The Blacksheep Trading Company.... They have a bit of everything it seems....tin signs, posters, pelts, and of course wood lobster traps and buoys. It was so cool talking with one of the owners Betsy who gave us a lot of history on the lobster buoys. So many great stories. They are located about 15 minutes outside of Bar Harbor and well worth a visit to browse their great selection.

I first came to US Bells four years ago and made a purchase of a large bell for about $350. It…read morestill hangs in our backyard and reminds me of Maine every time it rings. It is very pleasant sounding, and not overbearing to any neighbor. It's almost like a sea buoy when a storm passes through. We were again in the area for this year's trip and decided to make a return visit. The bells were all the same and pretty much nothing has changed. The store is about a 10x20 room more than half filled with all kinds of different sized bells. Most are singles, but they also have doubles and triples, too. Some of them look like mobiles. The clappers are not inside the bells, but outside usually made of mahogany wood or metal. The other part of the store has pottery for sale. This is a family run business which I'm always willing to help out if possible. On this trip, we were allowed to check out the foundry which was in a building right next door. It was amazing to see and feel the different sands used to make the molds, and if we were to have showed up a few hours earlier, we probably could have seen a brass pour. The counter person told us that the finish work once cooled is quite labor intensive which is why the bells are expensive. Today, I picked up a triple bell with a higher ringtone that will complement my big bell in my backyard. It was $135 and looks like the one in the photo above. An added bonus was that the day we visited was eclipse day, and we got to "see" the eclipse while at the store. Hopefully, we'll be back before 2024! I would highly recommend US Bells if you have a desire for something that not only can you appreciate it's design, but it's sound can remind you of Maine! Sight and sound!

If there's one place I can do some serious gift shopping for my family, it's in Bar Harbor. But not…read moreso fast- because around all the main attractions spots, I mainly found touristy souvenir shops with key chains. YAWN! Every time I'm vacationing, I'm always on the look-out for interesting shops that sell items worth my money to give away. My Darling Maine Island Boutique is another great Bar Harbor Gift Shop on Cottage Rd where you can pick up really interesting keepsakes. No- you're not going to find the mundane souvenirs here. What you'll find are gifts with a purpose, many with a twist and a message from local artists. Victoria and I caught up via email and phone to solidify my appointment. She was super accommodating to our schedules and opened her shop earlier than expected. Thank you so very much! Her shop has a little of everything including casual and funky clothes and other well-priced pieces that I snapped up for myself! She was beyond friendly and we practically talked for almost an hour. Love your energy girl! No doubt, you'll find one-of-a-kind "souvenirs" here.

I searched through dozens of Bar Harbor shops looking for a pair of touchstone earrings to remind me of the peace and joy I felt in Acadia this summer. Finally, I found delicate, handmade silver earrings shaped like blueberry leaves in My Darling Maine. Perfect! I wore them to work my first day back - and lost one. I was heartbroken. But I contacted Victoria to buy a replacement, and she took the time to send me individual pictures of every pair of blueberry leaf earrings she had in the shop (because they're all unique!) so I could choose. And then she mailed them to me in Virginia. Now my beautiful blueberry leaf earrings are a sweet reminder of our family vacation in Maine AND of the power kindness can have over loss. Thank you, Victoria!!!

Featuring works by local artists (hooked rugs, scarves, photographs, paintings, rock art and more than I could write here), it feels a lot like stopping by and visiting a friend with a really cool house. You can poke around without feeling intrusive and it seems the people running the place are genuinely happy to have you there. The back building is full of books and antiques while the front building holds the artwork. A seasonal gallery is located in a side building featuring even more artwork. I'll be back to see the new stuff (and to see what of the old stuff has sold).
