Parking is for 2 hours with additional 2 hour parking space available just across from the supermarket parking on Brougham Street. V Series was previously known to locals as 'A Caterpillar's Dream' and under new management, the same management/family as Tao's Restaurant in Bulleen, it has now become V Series with the same head chef. The cafe like the previous cafe still serves contemporary vegetarian food with vegan and gluten free options. When we arrived at 11:30am on a Saturday, the supermarket parking was very full so we drove through to the car park on Brougham Street. The cafe itself was reasonably calm and having tried the food, I am a little surprised that was the case. The menu itself, I must admit was a little overwhelming with a mish mash of cuisines and types of food available; meaning there's basically something for everyone on the menu (a great place to cater for a group with different preferences). Instead of the usual vegetarian breakfast items or pasta and burger (next time perhaps!), we opted to try a few dishes from their noodle, bento and small items menu which clearly had an Asian influence to them. Dishes that make up this review: Stewed tomato noodles (vegan); V Series's signature Taiwanese tomato broth noodle ($16). Extremely appetising with the sweet and a little sour broth. Bento box (vegan); teriyaki mock chicken served with multigrain rice, spring roll, enoki tempura and pumpkin salad ($18). I wasn't a huge fan of the multigrain rice (perhaps a little too healthy for me hehe...) but the variety and the rest of the bento was delicious. Not normally being a fan of mock meat, I actually did enjoy this and found it to be as close to the real thing as it can be in flavour but not in texture. Green tea soba noodle (vegan); organic Japanese green tea buck wheat noodles tossed with avocado, spinach, kale, goji berries, cashew and sesame seeds ($16). A cold dish with a nice sesame dressing and fresh salad. I didn't personally love the goji berries in the mix (they kind of stick to your teeth) but that aside, I enjoyed the dish and probably will request no goji berries next time. Crispy peking bean curd bun (vegan); Asian style steamed bun stuffed with daikon pickles, cucumber, coriander and peanuts ($10 for 2). The bun was nice and soft even once cooled down (after all the photo taking), the bean curd was crispy and the Peking sauce was delicious. A great combination that surprisingly works. Vegan cupcakes; salted caramel and cheesecake ($5.50 for regular sized and $2.80 for mini). The cheesecake cupcake was definitely a first for me and probably my favourite of the two (I could not tell the difference between the real thing versus vegan). The salted caramel cupcake on the other hand while still tasty and moist, I could tell the texture of the chocolate cupcake was not exactly the same as its non-vegan counterpart. It's great to have a 100% vegan option at the Queen Vic night markets, which for years have been very heavy on the meat. Not to mention, the food here is YUM. Right now they have 5 things on the menu, all vegan: - Middle Eastern Open Wrap - Japanese Udon Noodles - Yellow Lentil and Coconut Curry - Laksa Noodle Soup - Sesame Crusted Tofu I've had the Middle Eastern Open Wrap and the Laksa Noodle Soup. My friend had the Yellow Lentil and Coconut Curry. All very tasty. The Middle Eastern Open Wrap was my favourite -- it's probably one of the best falafel wraps I've had in a long time, and it seemed like a real step up from the junky kind you get at kebab shops. This one actually tasted somewhat "gourmet," if you know what I mean. Real thought was put into the flavours and the sauce, which was delicious. The laksa was OK -- a bit messy to eat if you can't find a seat and you have to stand around awkwardly holding the bowl in one hand and trying to navigate with your chopsticks/spoon in the other. (I'm bad with chopsticks anyway and nearly stabbed myself in the eye at one point.) This food stall is located next to the Sri Lankan food stall, away from the main row of food stalls, so you kinda have to hunt for it. It's further south than the main row of food stalls, if that makes sense -- kind of in the middle of the building, with more of the non-food stuff. On the plus side, that means the queue is much shorter than at other food stalls! Prices are right in line with every other food stall at the Queen Vic Night Market -- i.e., a couple of dollars overpriced, but you're paying for the atmosphere of the place. Really great food stall. I'll be back.

Compared to what I'd usually eat, not so enjoyable, so I'll have to compare it with other vegan meals I've had and use the comments / opinions of the vegans at the table to guide me. We started off with coffee, they have cow juice for the carnivores :-) so happy with that and vegans all enjoyed their brews. My chickpea burger with chips was on a par with other vegan food I've had, so nothing outstanding here. None of the vegans were raving about their food so let's say good. My kids didn't like the Mac and cheese (not really cheese) so I had to buy more chips as they liked these. The kids also enjoyed their cows milk chocolate milkshakes. Those that had dessert were very happy. It cost $60 for 2 kids and myself, so fairly expensive for what we had. Those of us that had been there before agreed we enjoyed the food better last time, so perhaps it just wasn't their best day today. Will I go back, reluctantly, would the vegans go back, certainly. So if your vegan, definitely give the Powerhouse a go, if not, I'd recommend your journey takes you elsewhere.

The shop itself is very unassuming - a diamond in the rough. Juanita (or who I assume is Juanita? Should have asked! ... ) was very friendly. They come with an array of sides (& plenty of them!) including a pineapple/cucumber salsa, a cabbage slaw, some diced onions, coriander, tomatillo with avocado and chipotle sauce. There was also a couple of Juanita's home made sauces on the table to use. We enjoyed it all! Although quite full we couldn't resist trying the salted caramel Cheezecake. It was really delicious, thick and rich but well balanced with the addition of yoghurt, honey, bitter chocolate and praline served with it. This is a vegan option FYI! BTW - Juanita's sells delicious sauces and spices to take away ... we just had to grab one. We'll definitely head back.

I won't lie though, the service can sometimes seem a little abrupt but when food tastes this good I can ignore it! Do book ahead though. At the normal meal times this place it packed and bustling. Makes for a great meal without the 'hip' factor. Make it on a Sunday at lunch for the yumcha menu. You tick off on a sheet what you want and they bring out all your little dishes. I recommend the pan fried dumplings. Get 2 serves (there's 5 in a serve and I'm greedy!). The curry mock lamb should also not be overlooked. Probably the best dish on the restaurant! Lunch menus come with rice and are quite cheap (~$10) while the dinner menu is the full meals better for sharing and you add steamed rice on the side.

I am not a big vegetarian eater but was so impressed with all aspects on the Vegie Hut. The food was outstanding, the flavour, portion size, fair price and did I mention the taste!! Service also was brilliant, intelligent well informed waitress', food was out quickly (even before they said it was going to be) which always makes me happy and the meals all came out at one - fantastic service. The only thing that confused me was how the food was on the menu. Some dishes clearly looked like a meat meal and although it was a vegetarian one I found you had to ask what was in it if it wasn't meat. A few vegetarian friends don't eat meat because of the taste, so a few dishes they wouldn't enjoy. There were still a few pure veg dishes like the hot and spicy eggplant which I had - absolutely delicious. The setting was so inviting, it was just a great place to be. A table next to us was reading a book it was just so ambient but everyone was able to talk also. We we lucky to get in without a booking but it quickly filled so will be sure to get one next time. I will definitely be going back, may even be a regular weekly thing. It has been so long since I went out to lunch and didn't feel greasy or sickly full after eating such a big meal. The food fells so healthy its like your organs have gone to the gym.

Having a deep affection for the Lentil as Anything offerings available at Abbotsford Convent, I was keen to experience the variation on the delicious buffet theme closer to home. Understandably, the location of the smaller venue in High Street means that the beautiful surrounds and good natured bustle of the much adored Abbotsford address is not a feature, but I was still looking forward to sampling the food on offer with my similarly inclined Northern locals. We arrived to a fairly relaxed room, and just sat ourselves down at the end of the communal table, and waited for someone with access to menus to appear. Within five minutes or so, we were welcomed and presented with menus (this is a sit down and order version of Lentil, much like the St Kilda venue as I understand it), with volunteers working the floor. Our experience was pretty much chaos theory in action from the get go, with two people coming to collect our orders, my dish turning up a good 10 minutes before my dinner buddies' food, some confusion about what the dishes being presented actually were, and an extra dish being thrown into the mix. As I said though, people taking orders, presenting the food, (even perhaps cooking the food) are there learning in a volunteer capacity, so it really was more the case of looking on with gentle amusement than frustration about meal things - kind of like a 'dinner and show' deal. I ordered the tagine (a little bland for my liking), and my dinner companions both ordered the mixed curry (both agreeing it was quite delicious). In retrospect, maybe we should have kept the third plate of curry that was prepared by accident due to order mix-ups so I could have feasted on the curry dish as well!! In the initial craziness of the arrival and menu hunt, we failed to notice the specials board near the counter, so make sure you check that out too for variations on the menu offerings if staff forget to remind you to do so (I will be doing that very thing next visit...there was a pumpkin curry dish that sounded really appealing that I'm hoping will make a reappearance!!). As with the other Lentil as Anything venues, it's a 'pay what you feel the meal is worth' deal, how wonderful is that concept!?! More so I believe, because the people of Melbourne have embraced it enough to ensure this restaurant continues to grow across our fair city. While the 'meh' rating may sound a little harsh in the context of people learning to do great cafe / restaurant things for no pay, it was more a reflection of the blandness of my dish. This place IS relatively newish though, and IS a local venue I am keen to support, and IS just finding its feet a little, I'm quite certain, so I am keen to give it a another go in the very near future. The concept behind this restaurant, and people it tends to attract as staff and customers are worth waiting for Lentil as Anything 'The Preston chapter' to find the confidence and cadence of its big sister in Abbotsford. It's just a matter of time... :)
