I thought my only option for relief was surgery of which I had heard dire results. I read about decompression therapy and was relieved to see that there was an alternative to surgery. The doctor's at Maine Spine & Nerve took a thorough physical and oral examination including x-rays. The diagnosis indicated that I was a candidate for decompression therapy. At no time did they guarantee a cure, but given my condition, they had seen others with similar injuries who had relief and returned to normal daily activities after decompression therapy. They did indicate verbally and in writing that I was also responsible for working within their care guidelines in order to maximize the recovery efforts. Today, I am out of pain, able to sit comfortably, returning to a light exercise routine, and starting physical therapy. In closing, I am so thankful that I went this route instead of surgery. He can do things now that he was unable to perform last spring. I have multiple problems. My first concern was neuropathy and I sought relief through Maine Spine & Nerve. From the get-go, Dr. Vander Ploeg informed me that he could help but because I'd suffered for so many years with this condition, I could expect only partial relief. He said a 40-50% reduction in symptoms and I feel that I achieved at least 60% if not more relief. I also suffer from back pain. I have been referred to orthopedic physicians for injections and physical therapists for physical therapy. I went to an acupuncturist. Nothing helped. Because of the success my husband has experienced, I know that Maine Spine & Nerve will be able to reduce my current pain. Further, some insurances do cover the cost of these treatments. Unfortunately, ours was not one of them. Would I recommend Maine Spine & Nerve to any of my friends? You bet! I already have. After that I was fairly quickly whisked into the back where they said they would be X raying my neck...what? Not sure if there was a mix up on my behalf or theirs but I assured the tech that we did not need to do this. He didn't argue and pleasantly brought me to my room for intake and to wait for my doctor. Dr. Abbott came in and chatted with me about my symptoms. He was very detailed and never seemed rushed to get to his next appointment. In the next couple of visits he has done the same and has given me several techniques to help alleviate pain along with his work that he has done on my neck and surrounding muscles. Sometimes runs late (don't all doctors) but overall an amazing experience and will continue to go to have work done on my neck.

Med professionals, while helpful to some degree, couldn't give me a clear answer on direction of treatment--could get an injection, could get surgery, sort of up to me. They recommended I start with physical therapy, and I'm grateful for that recommendation--the spine specialist gave me the number to Back in Motion, in Portland, ME. I was skeptical. The space is in a strip mall on outer Brighton. The therapy space is shared with multiple physical therapist and patients. I worked with Dan S., and he quickly alleviated my concerns. Dan is thoughtful, smart, funny, and takes time to get to know his patients. He asks a lot of relevant questions and offers practical suggestions and feedback. We met weekly for about four months--I went from unable to stand for more than a few minutes at a time, to (on my last visit, recently) jogging laps around the parking lot, working on form and balance. There was a lot of work in between, but all of it was set in motion by Dan's guidance. He explained how each exercise would help in the strengthening and recovery process, and he built a customized program that worked for me. I incorporated his suggestions in my workout at the gym. Dan is the real deal. When my other healthcare professionals (chiropractic, nurse practitioner) asked about my PT progress, and I told them about the specifics of my plan, not only did they seem pleasantly surprised, they commended the direction of treatment and Dan's recommendations. How often do various wings of healthcare agree on anything?! The Myofascial Release therapy that Val and Emily specialize in was extremely therapeutic. I am back to enjoying life. I can do yoga now, I am pain free and I feel great! They hadn't even done the required legwork to get the surgical information from the surgeon's office. She spoke with her practice manager and asked for the notes to be requested. When she returned, she said there would be no charge that day, and then said we could start doing some therapy. I told her I didn't want her yanking my arm without her seeing the reports and knowing what the surgery entailed. On my way out, the front desk clerk INSISTED that a co-pay must be collected even though no work was done and the practice manager said there would be no charge that day. It was worth the $31 to get out of there and make the 45 minutes each-way drive to Brunswick for professional PT experiences. Avoid.
