I am as surprise as any reader will be to read this review. In early March 2022, I took a bad…read moretumble and landed hard on my right hip in the street. I had broken my thigh just inches from the ball of my right hip. After thirty-two days in the hospital, I was told that it was time to be moved to a rehabilitation facility to complete my recovery. My medical bills were being paid by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and I had to find a facility that was contracted with that organization. The only one remotely close to my home was Waddell Nursing and Rehab Center, of which I had heard some terrible things. Regardless, I chose to be near my wife and so arrangements were made for my transfer by ambulance, to Galax, Va.. I arrived around 5:00 P.M. and was placed in a room with an older gentleman. I was immediately upset because I had been told that I would have a private room. This disappointment proved premature, unfair and ridiculous. My dinner tray was brought to me shortly after my arrival. While in the hospital, I had barely eaten any of the stale, tasteless items brought to me at mealtime. With my first bite here, however, I was amazed at how delicious the food was. I dare say that Waddell served the best Cole slaw I had ever tasted. Indeed, during the eighteen days I was there, I cleaned my plate every meal except one, when they served pork roast, which I have never enjoyed eating. I found that this facility was kept clean and was very comfortable. The staff, doctors, nurses, CNAs and the physical and occupational therapists, were clean, professional, and very friendly. They knew what to do and how to do it. I received two rehab sessions a day. This had been scheduled for five days a week. When I told my case worker that I wanted to return home as soon as possible, she made arrangements to have a therapist come in on Saturday and Sunday to work with me with the intent that I would reach a discharge level sooner. I was given a shower every three days and a sponge bath on the other days. I got clean clothes every day. Whenever I wanted to try something more difficult, the therapists accommodated me. In eighteen days I was discharged being able to bathe myself, feed myself, take care of all my own personal hygiene situations, climb stairs and walk (with the aid of a walker) as far as 700 paces. None of which I could do when I arrived there. I highly recommend Waddell Rehab Center in Galax, Virginia. If I am ever dumb enough to break another thigh, I am going back. The folks there turned what had been a painful, depressing and sorry experience in an unbelievably happy time.

You can tell they love their job because they are always have smiles on their face and willing to help anyone at any given time. They really take excellent care of all their residents. When I first came here , a little over a year ago, I was in pretty bad shape. I was even on hospice for awhile. Then started improving and now am off hospice and going to be transitioning back to independent living. If I ever need a nursing home again it would be a great honor to come back here to this place.

There is lack of communications between Nurses, Therapist, Social Workers and administration. Very difficult to get in touch with staff, would not return calls and nursing staff had voicemail, but did not have a code to receive the messages. When registering my mother, was told of her food allergy to fish; and they served her fish 3 days later. Tried calling and could not get a person, so emailed with no answer. Upon leaving set up home health for the Medical Power of Attorney's address instead of the resident's address. Her PCP called and requested to bring her discharge papers to her Post release visit; because it was hard to get discharge papers from them or get someone to answer the phone. Very clean facility.

The entireties of the staff - from the sales, to skilled nursing, to the dining room servers were welcoming, obliging, and happy (which is not always the case in senior facilities!) The residents we encountered were equally cheerful! My father decided on that 1st visit that "this was the place for him", and fortunately there was an apartment that would be available to him in a week's time. Unfortunately, as is often the case with elderly parents, we experienced a medical "emergency" with my Dad several days before his scheduled move-in. The amazing team at Abbotswood moved mountains to get him in-house, and under their expert Living Well @ Home skilled nursing care...an answer to our prayer as we could not give him the care he needed. The team at Abbotswood is enthusiastic, respectful, responsive and incredibly professional! The grounds are beautiful! The interiors are updated and bright! The restaurants serve wonderful food, and are accommodating for each resident's particular needs! I doubt you will find anything in the Triad that is even close to the gem that Abbotswood is!

All they are interested in is sedating your loved one to death. If they are Black and in any form of pain... LOOK OUT! Oscar the nurse practitioner LOOK OUT!! DILAUDID is his prescription of choice. It will render your loved one basically comatose. Nurse Nancy is Nurse Ratchet. She causes more problems and is clueless when you catch her in a lie. They hire too many "Agency CNA's" on the weekends so they don't know the patients or their needs. It is a skeleton crew. The regular weekly CNA's are overwhelmed. 12 hour shifts with more than 20 to 30 patients each The administrator is clueless. Just making statements without any information or education in the field of care for the elderly. Let's talk about the ER Doctor doing her money grab and set up to be a doctor for the elderly and rehabilitating. WHY?? ER Doctors are for GSW (gun shot wounds) and Broken bones) Dr Wright doesn't know what she is doing!! She doesn't even know that catheters come in different sizes. She is never around and when she is, Dr Wright knows NOTHING of the residents. She should be ASHAMED OF HERSELF! My father was sent to the ER frequently due to their negligence. Disgusting Deplorable Delusional people.
