The front door is replaced by plastic and totally frosty. Am I entering a warzone? Upon entry 3 staffers are gazing at me. I think: "uh oh, not good" a good store has their employees busy and not gazing at the customers. Remember: If you got time to lean, you have got time to clean. Just to make sure they had my item I called the store before I left and asked them, Do you have my item? She assured me they had it. When I got to the store they did not have it. So now the wild goose chase for my item starts. The thing is they are the only place in a wide radius which has specialty items HD or Lowes dont carry. I would really hate to see them go. I've always been a fan of Ace, and it is my go-to place for all my hardware needs, gardening things, and odds and ends.   I've shopped this store maybe three times since I've been in ABQ, and I find most items that I am seeking there. Their Customer Service Team for is very good.  I agree that I don't see much staff on the floor at all times, but when I either flag them down or go to the counter they are very kind and helpful. Unlike much of the food establishments here in ABQ, you aren't asked to tip the associates - they are just kind and helpful because it's their way. DO NOT GO HERE TO RENT A RUG DOCTOR! The female manager is very rude and the staff will give you a huge hassle. All of the employees except 1 was clueless on how to rent out the machine which is how bad a manager they have. Her personality was also terrible, almost like she hates life. When I finally returned the Rug Doctor they said I didn't clean it (I did clean it) and wanted to rip me off another $50 even though the cleaning fee stated was $15. I just decided to take a brush and clean it in front of them but they still didn't refund my deposit because they needed the receipt since they don't know how to look it up in the system. So I went home to get it and they finally refunded. Even though the commercials say Ace is the place with the helpful hardware folks they had very little courtesy. 1 out of 5 stars. read more

Once again I checked the website for availability, drove to the store and was told the product I came for was out of stock. It's happened several times at this store. Their shelves are often sparsely stocked and selection is small. I prefer to buy from local businesses and avoid Home Depot and Lowe's, but I don't want to waste my time chasing after products that are out of stock. Fortunately there was a True Value across the street. I found my product there for a much lower price. I'm done with Ace. read more

Staff are always so helpful here. That is a big reason for my returning over and over again. They usually have what I'm looking for. There's lots of gardening supplies. Walked in the buy a Stihl grass trimmer. Apparently Ace Hardware can't sell a Stihl product without a Stihl specialist being present. I knew exactly what I wanted, but the store refused to sell me the product. The clerk told me come back tomorrow between 9am and 2pm and "there should be a Stihl tech in the store". What a joke. Searched online immediately when I walked out and found the same product for $50 cheaper. Have to wait a week, but shame on Ace for not being able to sell Stihl products at all times a customer walks in the door. read more

I love ACE Hardware. It is a small store but the customer service is top notch. Whenever I go to Lowe's or Home Depot I feel like I am in my own. I always have to flag down a worker that doesn't seem excited to help me. At ACE they always greet me when I walk in and several people ask me if I need help. I absolutely love this place. My sister and I are getting my parents home ready to put on the market and we are far from handymen. We made 3 trips to this store yesterday and we got most everything that we need. The employees are friendly, helpful and Dutch was amazing. The store will not have everything that a Lowe's or Home Depot will have but has a great variety of things including paint. Seems to be reasonably priced also. I'm quite disappointed in Pioneer Ace Hardware on San Mateo near Lomas in Albuquerque. I've always received friendly and helpful service from the staff there. This time, however, such was not the case. I've emailed Ace customer service several times and they just keep saying my complaint has been forwarded to the store. I've heard nothing from anyone at Pioneer Ace. So... here's my negative review: At just before 12:45pm on Friday, July 22, 2022, I went in the store at San Mateo and Lomas in Albuquerque, NM. I need brad nails for an old Sears Craftsman electric brad nailer. I found none in the ailes of the tool section. I asked the cashier for help and he said he'd call someone. A minute later, he came over to help but said he thought I just needed a cabinet unlocked. He left and called someone else. Colleen arrived a couple of minutes later. I was looking at masks as I waited and she walked past me toward tools. She didn't have clothing or a name tag that identified her as an employee and I wasn't certain that she was. I turned and followed her, she turned and said with a distinctly surly note, "Oh, it's you?" I said it was and she said, "What is it you want?" Both her tone and demeanor made it clear that she was quite put out by having to help me with anything whatsoever. I was shocked. I said, "Wow! Forget it!" and turned to walk out of the store. Then I decided I wanted her name. I turned and walked back to her. That would have been a perfect opportunity for her to say, "Gosh, I'm sorry I snapped at you. I've had a horrible day." She said no such thing. I asked her name and she mumbled something. I said, "I'm sorry?" and she said, "Colleen". I said thank you and left the store. I've been in this particular Ace Hardware a dozen times or more since it opened. Every employee I've ever dealt with treated me with respect and helpfulness. Until today. read more

They sure have had a lot of turnover of employees at this store. There have been some nice but not necessarily helpful staff in the past but they don't stick around long enough it seems to even get to know the place. The manager there now seems to not have the 'customer service' circuit installed. If an employee doesn't have it coming it, he's not going to get it there. I usually go to True Value. This ACE store does have some cool sections I wish I could take advantage of. After the last 2 times in there, I thought I'd rather drive to another one but it's in Rio Rancho! Rather drive to Lowe's on Juan Tabo than go to this place around the corner. It's ashamed, really. Can't fight the biggies this way! The customer service in this part of town has all but disappeared. I dropped in here to pick up a couple of minor items as I drove past. Worth the visit. The staff are really friendly and knowledgeable. The place is packed with both the common and the cool. I did a lap of the store just 'sightseeing' even though I knew exactly what I needed. And it was laid out in a far more intuitive way for me than are the big competitor chains. Just went to buy a patio umbrella saw a rack with a sale for 29.99, asked a lady there if every umbrella on the rack was 29.99 and was told yes, grab a box walk up to the front and was told it was 129.99! I said it was as off the sale rack and I had asked an employee and a salesman standing by the counter says it didn't apply to that model, I said well that's a bit misleading don't ya think? To which he rudely replied it has a sticker on it and I should have read the sticker. I don't mind paying full price but rudeness and misleading advertising I won't abide, sorry to say after being a costumer for years I won't be back to this Ace hardware. read more

As my neighborhood hardware store, I have visited this Ace several times in the last two years. Small selection, knowledgeable-enough staff and easy parking. I can generally get in and out with what I need in a few minutes. I often pick things up from this store as I'm out and about - knowing generally what I need and knowing that I can always ask for help, it's never been a problem. I stopped in the other day for some drain cleaner. I explained what was happening and was told that it might be better to snake the drain than try a liquid cleaner. The man explained to me what I needed, but advised that I have my "husband, boyfriend, father, or another man" do it for me. I was totally put off by this and, while I have been there once since, it has left a bad impression! read more

This place will only allow you to use the restroom if there is enough employees working at the time you happen to be shopping there. I think this is pretty ridiculous. Most all hardware stores and stores alike have a public restroom. When I called the manager to find out why I was refused a restroom he simply told me that it depends on what time of day and how many employees are on the floor to be allowed to use that restroom. I will not shop at a store that refuses restrooms to their customers. This was a very unfortunate experience because I really like the store. I will not shop here anymore. read more

With the Orwellian culture of chain-stores having destroyed the tradition of hardware stores as centers of local culture and knowledge of craft it's nice to see a franchise within the ACE hardware system rise up so as to defy the prevailing trend. This particular location features an employee culture that seeks to align with a system of values that I've heard many locals refer to as "old school"--i.e. personalism, competence and integrity. With customer service ranking very high (demonstrably so!), I can only hope that the employees themselves are treated as well as they treated me: attentive, respective, considerate, thoughtful, helpful and above all HUMAN. Businesses aligned with our nation's frat-boy, managerial cults seek always to dehumanize and exploit in the name of profit; as such they simply do not merit our business. Denial of the harsh truth of corrupt markets does not alter the reality: managerial corporate-culture promulgates an ethos that directly threatens the peace and has accomplished this horrendous feat by way of advancing a system of practices so corrupt as to have perverted the very core of legal and scientific doctrine like a rot. "Resistance is futile" declares the Bee-org, as its unwinding corporatist tentacles relentlessly advance upon us--Cthulhu in its beast-like bloodthirst . The history of corporate dominance over civil society itself being one among too many that few study to the degree the topic merits, the quick answer is to problem for locals in Albuquerque presents itself like low-hanging fruit: Ace Hardware on San Mateo. So please consider this option. It's the right thing to do. As to the longer term answer in the context of the big picture, I'm not so optimistic. And in that regard perhaps it would be fitting that we all wear a pair of Depends. Depending on how you spell the brand name, it's a source of confusion that similarly begs deep questions. read more

I usually go to HD or Lowes for hardware but only ACE carried the plumbing part I needed in stock. A young man came to my rescue when 2 parts appeared to be the same and I wasn't sure which one was correct. He researched and found the answer (at HD or Lowes you have to hunt for a person to help, and aren't always helpful). This guy also helped me find a specialized tool (also in stock). At checkout, only 1 register was open and 5 customers got in line. Immediately, 3 more associates opened registers so we didn't have to wait. Outstanding customer service!! My experience at this Ace is so opposite of the last review posted here in 2018. 1) This huge hardware store had NO ONE on the floor to help me, and this type of retail store often needs customers questions answered or help with finding things. I was on my own here. I had to ask the sole person I could find for help and she was doing inventory, not really there for my needs. But, she did help all she could, and wondering herself where everyone was. 2) Then the two things I was looking for they did not have. 3) When I went to return something I purchased for Cash 10 min. earlier, the cashier--not friendly either--she wanted my name for this transaction and had to call a cashier out to approve it. Geez. Go to the TRUE VALUE just across the street from here!!! They are very helpful, friendly, and had what I wanted. 3 strikes and this Ace is out! I think this store might have one employee that is really judgmental (similar experience to Jessica R.). For a time-sensitive project, I needed a carbon tip for an electric engraver. I stopped at my regular quick hardware store, True Value. Since everything is laid out simply, I discovered they did not have it, but did have 2 steel tips for $5.00. Opting to do better, I went across the street to Ace. Since their tips were locked up, an older gentleman unlocked the cabinet and stood off to the side. I found a cardboard box full of random bits. After some time I found only a single steel bit. So, when I asked him about the carbon tip, he did not check the inventory but disinterestedly replied; 'You could look online or try Hobby-lobby'. The 'online' suggestion certainly had me wondering why I came in in the first place and the Hobby Lobby suggestion was a dig at what he assumed I was using this for (pastime or hobby rather than business) as Home Depot or Lowes would be more likely to carry it than Hobby Lobby. The kicker was I decided to try the steel tip rather than drive across town and bought it without reading the price (my bad). The single tip cost $9.00, nearly twice True Value for 1/2 as much! While this was only a matter of a few dollars, it definitely signaled to me that when I need to replace larger equipment (like compressors) that I shouldn't even bother looking at Ace's selection. read more

I went in to the Ace Hardware in Rio Rancho on 528 last Tuesday, I was on my lunch break and I bought a Red Bull and a Pecan Roll, I started eating the Pecan Roll and it was very hard so I figured it might be hard because it was cold outside, I got halfway through the Pecan Roll, I look down and there's maggots in the Pecan Roll, live maggots. I am mediately started gagging and throwing up, I turned around and went back to the store I left the Pecan Roll laying on my seat and I brought the manager out to look at it. The manager and I went back into the store he gave me my money back and I asked to see the other Pecan Rolls that were on the shelf and they had lived maggots inside the sealed package. I even took a video of it and the reason why I'm very upset is because they didn't write an incident report, they didn't really apologize, I called the store after that and the owner was supposed to get back to me and I haven't heard from anybody. I always shop at Ace, I spend a lot of money with them and I can't believe they would not get back to me very un professional. read more

I called this store to get information on a good weed killer that would last a long time but not make the soil sterile. Colleen was very nice and went out of the way to help. She went over to the products and came back and recommende one which I later purchased. It lasts for 6 months and has great reviews. I like good parking and getting in and out quickly as well. read more
