To get a sense of what Refinery is like, check out reviews for his apartment company: https://www.yelp.com/biz/campus-property-management-champaign-9?osq=cpm+apartments&override_cta=Request+information I called 4/16 and spoke to Bailey. I was interested in student plan $40 initiation fee, $35/mo. I visited 4/17 and dealt with the woman at the counter. I repeatedly told her that I wanted the $40/$35 student plan. She handed me a contract for a 12 month plan, which I did not want. After going in circles with her for a bit of time, she took my credit card and fiddled with her computer. Then she handed me paperwork showing completely incorrect charges. I asked her to reverse them and fix the problem. Eventually, she gave up and got her manager, Tony, involved. Tony worked on the computer for a bit and at one point, I had several pending $64 charges on my card. Then he seemed to have the problem under control and he charged my card $40 and $18.72. Since $18.72 is more than 1/2 of $35, that charge didn't make any sense for half a month. I called Tony on 4/17 and told him that I had several authorizations on my card still. I asked if we could just forget it all and cancel the membership and refund everything, including the $40 and $18.72. He said no problem, and I emailed him a copy of the credit card bill showing the current state of it. On 4/18, two charges moved from authorization to posted - $40 and $18.72. I emailed a copy of the statement to Tony and requested that he refund the charges, as we had both agreed. It's now nearly two weeks later and I still have charges on my card. I have filed complaints with BBB and Illinois Attorney General. If they don't come to their senses soon, I'll file a lawsuit in small claims court. Having all these authorizations on my card made it impossible for me to shop for groceries for three days. I wish businesses were much more careful with charges that they post to customer cards. Accidental charges aren't just frustrating to see and resolve, they can have unanticipated consequences for cardholders. For more information on management personnel and their names, check the BBB listing for Refinery. DO NOT PATRONIZE THIS GYM UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE

Most negative part is the cancellation policy. My wife cancels a few days into the current month…read moreand she owes for that month (which is fine), but for the next month too? Not cool (this after cancelling all Zumba classes with little to no notice). When I handed in my form to cancel at the beginning of 2020, we were still charged for months afterwards. They eventually honored it, but only after having to get on them numerous times. Equipment selection is good, but definitely dated (Mandelbaum from Seinfeld would feel at home). The classes are not given in dedicated rooms, but instead are given upstairs in an area that is alternatively used for events like weddings. It's a little odd. They started getting cheap by not turning on the AC for the wife's zumba class (claiming the AC was broken). I hate franchised gyms like Planet Fitness, so this placed looked promising in comparison. Ultimately, it disappointed.

OTF Champaign is absolutely not poorly run! Check it out for yourself (the first class is free) and you'll find a well-managed facility with welcoming staff where you are guaranteed to get an intense, carefully-planned workout. I have been an OTF member for several months and my experience has been perfect! I can also attest that the gym is quite popular. If it sucked so bad the 5am, 6am, and after-work classes would not be in such high demand. OTF Champaign is popular because the workouts are awesome, the coaches and staff are great, their class times are frequent and convenient, and the facility is clean and well-managed. As a 39-year-old woman who took a loooong hiatus from the gym during Covid, OTF in Champaign has motivated me to hit the gym again and I am seeing excellent results. Don't listen to the haters. OTF Champaign is a great gym!

Best of all, though, are the coaches and staff. These are some of the most dedicated, upbeat, and encouraging people you will ever meet. They're highly professional and mission-oriented, really wanting to get behind you on your fitness journey, wherever you are on that path. Going to a workout at OTF Champaign is always a bright spot in my day. So grateful for the team there!

If a machine breaks, it takes 6-8 weeks before it's fixed, walls are in need if patching and painting, lockers are dirty as well as sinks, and walls in the locker room. Staff are sometimes friendly but other times they just sit in the office on their cell phones. If it gets much nastier I think I'm going somewhere else. A shame since it's close to my house and reasonably priced. One year later and this place continually goes downhill. Again, the only reason I continue to go here is it's four blocks from my house. It's such a great location and could be such a nice gym with a little TLC. Obviously the owner doesn't give a shit. You can tell, it's nearly empty most of the time. Disgusting photos from the men's locker room and holes in the wall in the gym area

Why so shabby, Charter Fitness Urbana?…read more This month marks my tenth year of membership at this location. (When I joined, it was Cardinal Fitness.) I do like this gym for many reasons. The location is ideal. The staff is friendly. The clientele is generally friendly and low-key: all ages and degrees of fitness work out here. But I do think we deserve a bit more. Safe and operating (working) machines. Better, consistent maintenance on machines and building. Regularly replaced mats for stretching and floor work (I did not take a photo of the mats: of the few available, they are peely and punctured.) I will continue to subscribe to Charter Fitness Urbana for the time-being: as I mentioned, it's convenient and I suppose I am loathe to change (old dog and all that). But, honestly, I don't feel very appreciated and if they don't up their game, I will need to seek a cleaner, better maintenanced place to work out.

They've been open for about two months…read more My initial assessment is that the place has everything you need for a good workout. Plenty of racks to get your lifts in without waiting like at other gyms. It's well ventilated and the space is big enough that you don't feel like everyone is running into each other. With that said, I've dealt with three broken machines. One I actually stepped on and the leg portion fell out. Luckily if you tell the staff they put a sign on the machine right away so others don't use it. Thankfully they have a lot of machines so you can just hop onto another one, but it does make you wonder about who assembled their cardio equipment if there has been this much physical failure with parts falling off. I mean, usually the screen malfunctions or a tension band in the machine needs to be replaced.... but an arm rest falling off? The leg of an elliptical coming off the hinges? The arm piece of their version of a cybex caving in on the user? Aside from that, this place has potential. It's open 24/7 which is heaven and they offer several group workouts such as spin class and HIIT classes. There's an opportunity to get a free 360 body scan too. Staff is friendly. The bathrooms are clean. There's also child care if you need it.

Especially the bathroom/locker rooms, and the tanning beds themselves. Trust me, always give those beds a close look before getting into them. They are quite often not cleaned well.
