Carmela is an incredibly skilled healer who has raised my quality of life significantly since I began seeing her. I have multiple co-morbid chronic illnesses that leave me battling chronic fatigue, pain, migraines, depression, anxiety, etc. I have seen a consistent reduction in my generalize pain, an improvement in my mood, and she's taught me skills to help me cope with my anxiety attacks. She has even helped me with my allergies. Most dramatically, though: I've been using a cane pretty consistently for years because of pain and poor balance. In our last two sessions, Carmela has treated me using the Zhu scalp acupuncture technique and, as a result of this treatment, my balance has improved significantly and my reliance on my cane has been radically reduced, to the point that I mainly use it only for stairs or for occasions when I will be on my feet for an extended period of time (like the five hours I spent walking though a recent convention, for instance). I felt defeated and hopeless. I had a relentless, rash all over for monthes - on my face, arms, legs and stomach like poison ivy that never healed. I randomly and frequently had my throat swell closed and my lips swell. I have to carry an EpiPen with my and Benadryl. I had been to two immunologist/allergists who could not help me. I had Alfa Gal from a tick bite and a secondary problem that my husband and I had found was seemed to be from sulfites found in many foods with preservatives. My son called me and suggested I try and alternative to get help with the Alfa Gal. He had spoken to his minister who also had had Alfa Gal and discovered there was a form of acupuncture that could help. He found Carmela Mager, who had 25 years of experience and had learned this particular form of therapy. We made the appointment which changed both our lives! She prescribed enzymes and a probiotic which helped enormously. She told me to do some reading on sulfite allergy. I did! I found studies on it which matched my life! Within a week, I started seeing the rash slowly heal. The acupuncture not only got rid of the Alfa Gal but also my hips no longer hurt. I can now eat pork, beef and lamb again. Carmela is an incredibly gifted healer. I came to her 3 months ago barely able to eat any foods - I had Lyme Disease and RMSF twice in the past, Bartonella just recently, and ALPHA-GAL (red meat allergy + dairy too for me) to boot. Ever since my obstetrician recommended a chiropractor for me 30+ years ago, I've been more open to non-Western ways of treating ailments. This summer marks twenty years since I began seeing Carmela. I was interested in NAET (naet.com) to relieve my allergy to wheat and she was the first practitioner in my area using this technique. I had not eaten wheat in eight years because it caused sinus infections and headaches. In just a few visits I was able to eat wheat without reacting. Later that year I was diagnosed with an ovarian cyst. Carmela supported me with acupuncture and EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) before and after surgery so that I was unafraid and I healed quickly. I HIGHLY recommend coming here for anyone that struggles with menstrual symptoms!!! I was having severe menstrual cramps that would last at least a week before my period and would continue for another week during my period. I was basically spending 2 out of every 4 weeks in severe pain. After nearly a year of this I decided to go see Carmela and it has been life changing. The first period I had after seeing her, I only had cramps for 2-3 days. I am a professional business woman & mother who lives in Chapel Hill. I manage a health management program that focuses on wellness, disease management & patient self advocacy including that they have strong working relationships with their providers. I am in need of therapies to help with plantar fasciitis that has not responded to traditional therapy in order to avoid surgery. I called nearly a month ago &scheduled a new patient appointment at Carmela's earliest available time. I called the week prior to my appointment to inquire whether there were any cancellations so I could be seen earlier; there were not so I was eager for my appointment this Thursday. Monday afternoon I received a voicemail from Hannah- an "appointment reminder" requesting I call to confirm. I am traveling on business & knew I would not be able to return the call until after 3pm Tuesday. I felt this would be reasonable & that my appointment would certainly not be at risk. Tuesday afternoon when my last meeting ended at 3 I checked my voicemails prior to calling & had received 2 additional messages - The 1st at 11:30 am from Hannah urgently requesting my confirmation call & the 2nd, from Carmela, my would be acupuncturist, at 2:30 pm stating "I have called you many times & I do not know why you won't return our call but if you do not confirm todday I will cancel your appointment." I was astonished that I was being threatened by this place of healing. It has not yet been a full business day since the first of 3 calls I have received demanding I call back to confirm my already scheduled & confirmed appointment. I would tell any of the participants in my health management program to communicate their feelings to their provider if one of them told me this was their situation. So, I call at 3:05 on Tuesday (24 hours or 1 business day from the first "appointment reminder" call) & speak with Hannah. I explain why I have not been available & state that I did intend to come & was eager about working with Carmela. I said I felt their demand of a return call in a short timeframe or else was unfair, especially when I had given no indication of ambiguity about my first appointment but rather the opposite. She interrupted me & passed the phone to Carmela. I verbalized again my schedule over the last 24 hours & my expectations that I not be cancelled or threatened should I not be available to return their call in a short turn around time. I stated that I very much was wanting to keep my appointment & did not appreciate being accused otherwise. She stated, not, "I am so sorry, that was not our intention" but rather "I need to confirm bc I have other clients with emergencies & what am I supposed to do, work another day?" (My thought: yes, if you want to treat them & they do not have a scheduled appointment. Or, refer them to one of your partners, or extend your work day by an hour, or fit them in if you have a cancellation, or perhaps stop taking new clients. I certainly do not think you should threaten new clients who waited patiently for 5 weeks while also in urgent pain for you to have availability & make them feel that you do not have time for them & that we are adding to your problems). My response to Carmela, "Go ahead & treat that patient, I will find a different provider because I do not deserve to be treated this way." I suggest you seek a different provider too, because just like I tell my program participants - it is essential that you have a respectful working relationship with your provider & it is clear to me that if Carmela is comfortable treating new patients this way & making this type of first impression she is not the type of provider I want & I can guarantee there are kinder, more respectful & professional providers available to us, so take your health needs elsewhere. read more
